AirConsole is a car-focused gaming platform in which the vehicle’s infotainment display runs the game and each player uses a smartphone as a controller. A built-in infotainment game is a broader category: a vehicle maker or infotainment platform may distribute games through its own app store, with its own input method, account rules, screen arrangement and safety limits. A touchscreen, Android-based system or familiar vehicle badge does not by itself prove AirConsole compatibility.
The practical choice depends on the exact model, model year, infotainment software, connected-service package, country, available catalog and whether you want parked play or an approved passenger-screen mode while moving. Verify those details against the vehicle identification number (VIN), current software and local app-store listing before relying on any model-specific claim.

What the two terms mean
AirConsole
AirConsole is an app or service integrated into selected vehicle infotainment systems. The central or passenger display renders the game, while phones join as controllers. AirConsole’s support instructions describe two pairing methods: scan the QR code shown in the vehicle or enter the connection code displayed on-screen in a phone browser or the AirConsole app. The support page also tells drivers who are checking eligibility to type “AirConsole” in the car’s entertainment package or search box. This design lets every participant keep private information on a personal screen. AirConsole CEO Anthony Cliquot described UNO Car Party this way: “Each player can secretly see their own cards on their phone while playing on the infotainment system of the car.” That is a different interaction model from putting every control on one dashboard touchscreen or pairing a conventional Bluetooth gamepad.

Built-in infotainment games
“Built-in” is not a single technical standard. It can mean games delivered through an automaker’s app store, games supplied by the underlying infotainment platform, or a game installed at the factory. Some use the dashboard touchscreen; others may use phones, physical controls or a passenger display. Their catalogs, multiplayer rules, account requirements and motion restrictions are set by the manufacturer and the particular software release. Therefore, a vehicle can have built-in games without supporting AirConsole, and an AirConsole-capable vehicle may offer only a subset of the service’s catalog.

There is no standardized definition of “built-in infotainment games,” so this table is a decision framework rather than a claim that every non-AirConsole system has each listed capability.
How AirConsole pairing works
- Confirm eligibility in the car. Park safely, open the vehicle’s entertainment package or app search and look for AirConsole. If the listing is absent, check the exact model, software release, country and connected-service package rather than assuming a hardware fault.
- Install or open the vehicle app. Supported cars may have AirConsole preinstalled, or you may need to download it from the automaker’s app store. Volkswagen, for example, distributes AirConsole Games through the VW In-Car Shop when it is not already present.
- Launch the game hub. The infotainment display should show a QR code or a connection code. Keep the vehicle stationary unless the manufacturer explicitly documents an approved passenger-display mode.
- Connect each phone. Scan the QR code with the phone camera, or open a phone browser or the AirConsole app and enter the displayed code. Follow the on-screen prompt to choose a nickname.
- Join the lobby. Additional players repeat the pairing step on their own phones. The first player can then select a title from the games shown as available for that vehicle and market.
- Check the title’s own rules. Player count, phone permissions, downloads and whether a game is playable while moving are title- and vehicle-specific. Do not assume that one game’s behavior applies to every title in the catalog.
The cited official instructions describe personal smartphones as the controllers. Škoda explicitly says no extra hardware is needed for its listed AirConsole use, and none of the cited setup pages calls for a special cable or separate console controller.

Volkswagen
For a Volkswagen that supports the service, install AirConsole Games from the VW In-Car Shop if it is not preinstalled. Open the app, scan the QR code on the display, enter a nickname, let other players join the lobby and have the first player choose a game. Volkswagen’s support instructions state that the vehicle must be parked for safety; follow the complete VW setup guidance.
Volkswagen Group’s PAC-MAN announcement lists ID.3, ID.4, ID.5 and ID.7 vehicles from ID. Software 4.0, plus Tayron, Tiguan, Passat, Golf Variant and Golf from model year 2025, in many European countries. The announcement says parked use requires a VW ID, an active VW Connect Plus contract, active internet on the smartphone and a prior download from the In-Car Shop. This is a dated, regional rollout list, not a worldwide guarantee; confirm the current listing for your VIN and market at Volkswagen Group’s announcement.

Audi
Audi distributes AirConsole through the Audi Application Store on eligible systems. Audi’s June 26, 2025 release identifies the A5, Q5, A6, A6 e-tron and Q6 e-tron with Android-based infotainment as examples. The documented prerequisites are the Audi Application Store, smartphone interface, a myAudi account and an active data connection. Install AirConsole from the store, open it and connect the phone by scanning the QR code shown in the car. Because the release is dated, check current local availability before treating those model examples as universal. Details are in Audi’s integration announcement.
Audi also documents a special passenger-screen case. In equipped cars, certain games can be played while the vehicle is moving on the passenger display; Audi says “the dynamic privacy mode ensures that distracting content is not visible to the driver while the car is moving.” This does not authorize play on a driver-visible central screen, and it does not mean every Audi or every AirConsole title is available in motion.
BMW and MINI
AirConsole’s current support page lists selected BMW models with BMW Operating System 8.5 plus Service Pack 21, Operating System 9 or Operating System 10, with model, operating-system version and country affecting availability. BMW Group’s 2024 announcement says current Operating System 9 models require BMW Digital Premium or the MINI Connected Package, while Operating System 8.5 models require BMW ConnectedDrive Professional. Those package names and eligibility rules can change, so check the vehicle-level listing rather than relying on the operating-system number alone. Škoda
Škoda’s product page lists Elroq and Enyaq vehicles with software 4 or higher and provides an availability check. Players connect phones by QR code, and the page says no additional hardware is required. Use the current checker at Škoda’s AirConsole page because equipment and software can differ by market and vehicle.
Compatibility: what to verify before you rely on it
AirConsole says availability can vary with the vehicle model, operating system or software, infotainment package, subscriptions or licenses and country. A reliable check therefore has several layers:

- Exact vehicle identity: record the model, model year, body style and VIN. A nameplate-level statement can cover several infotainment generations.
- Software and hardware: note the infotainment operating-system version, service pack and screen configuration. BMW’s OS 8.5, OS 9 and OS 10 eligibility is a concrete example of why the version matters.
- Market: app catalogs and connected services are country-specific. A European rollout list should not be applied to North America or another region without confirmation.
- Connected-service plan: check whether a package such as BMW Digital Premium, MINI Connected Package, BMW ConnectedDrive Professional or VW Connect Plus is active and valid for the vehicle.
- App-store listing: search the in-car store itself. If AirConsole is not listed, ask the manufacturer or dealer to check the VIN and software rather than sideloading an unverified app.
- Phone and data: confirm that every player has a compatible smartphone, an internet connection when the vehicle program requires it and permission to open the pairing page.

What you can play
Catalogs are not identical across vehicles. BMW Group materials cite UNO Car Party and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? Audi examples include Pictionary Car Party, UNO Car Party, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? and Overcooked. Volkswagen announced PAC-MAN Championship Edition for the qualifying vehicles in its rollout. These are examples, not a promise that every listed title appears in every car, country or software release. The in-car catalog shown after pairing is the authoritative list for that session.
Multiplayer design is one of AirConsole’s clearest differences from a single dashboard touchscreen. Each participant can keep controls or private information on a phone while the shared display shows the action. That arrangement is especially useful for card or quiz games, but the number of players and any age or account restrictions still belong to the individual title.
Vehicle integration can go beyond the screen. Volkswagen describes selected game-specific interaction with ambient or background lighting and, on compatible ID. models, ID. Light. Those effects are optional manufacturer integrations, not a standard requirement for AirConsole and not evidence that another brand’s car supports the same behavior.
Screen placement and safety rules
Parked play
Parked-only operation is the default assumption. Volkswagen’s instructions explicitly require the vehicle to be parked, and any driver should stop in a legal, safe location before launching or joining a game. Do not let a passenger’s phone pairing distract the driver during a maneuver or while traffic conditions are changing.
Passenger-display play while moving
Audi documents a limited exception for certain games on the passenger display in equipped vehicles. Its dynamic privacy mode is intended to keep distracting content from the driver. This is not a general permission to use a dashboard game while driving: the display, vehicle equipment, title and software must all support the feature, and the driver must remain able to concentrate on driving. If the car does not clearly identify a passenger-screen mode, wait until parked.

Why the same game can have different rules
Motion restrictions are enforced by the vehicle integration, not merely by the game’s name. A title playable on an Audi passenger display may be blocked on a Volkswagen central screen, and a parked-only version may be all that is available in another market. Treat the message shown by the vehicle as authoritative and never bypass it by changing settings or using an unofficial installation.

AirConsole pairing itself can look simple, but access may depend on several accounts. Audi requires an Audi Application Store account experience, smartphone interface, myAudi account and active data connection. Volkswagen’s cited rollout requires a VW ID and active VW Connect Plus contract, plus internet on the smartphone. BMW’s documented package requirements show that a compatible operating system alone may not be enough. Other built-in games may use a different account or licensing arrangement.
- Sign in to the automaker’s account before a trip, when the vehicle is parked and connected.
- Check that the connected-service subscription has not expired or been transferred to another owner.
- Keep the phone’s mobile data or approved vehicle connection active when the program requires it.
- Expect availability to change after a software update, subscription change, license expiration or move to another country.
- Use each player’s own phone when a game depends on private hands, cards or quiz answers.
The cited manufacturers do not provide a single universal price or subscription schedule for AirConsole access. Confirm any fee, trial, license or data charge in the vehicle’s current app store and connected-services account before purchase.
Troubleshooting common failures
AirConsole is not in the car’s app search
First verify the country, VIN, model year, infotainment software and connected-service package. An unsupported model can still have a modern touchscreen or Android-based system. If the vehicle should qualify, install pending infotainment updates and ask the dealer or manufacturer to perform a VIN-level eligibility check. Do not assume that a phone app alone can add the in-car integration.
The QR code will not pair
Park the vehicle, wake the infotainment system and reopen AirConsole so a fresh code appears. On the phone, scan the new code or enter it manually in a browser or the AirConsole app. Disable a captive portal or VPN that blocks the connection page, switch to the required mobile or vehicle data connection and try one phone at a time. If the code expires, close the pairing page and repeat the launch sequence rather than reusing an old code.
The app opens but no games appear
Catalog visibility can be limited by country, license, software version, account or connected-service status. Confirm that the phone has internet, the vehicle is signed in and the app store shows the current version. A title advertised by a manufacturer may be a rollout example rather than an entitlement for every trim. Check the in-car catalog and the manufacturer’s current support page.
A player cannot join the lobby
Have the player rescan the QR code or enter the current connection code, then choose a unique nickname. If the lobby is full, the title’s player limit has been reached; select another supported game or remove an idle phone. Keep all phones on a stable connection and avoid switching between browser tabs during pairing.
The game is blocked while the car is moving
That is usually an intentional safety restriction, not a malfunction. Stop and park for Volkswagen’s documented implementation. In an Audi with an equipped passenger display, use only the manufacturer-approved passenger mode and only when the vehicle presents it; never attempt to make a driver-visible screen playable through unofficial changes.
Which option fits your use case?
Choose AirConsole when
- Your exact car lists AirConsole in its current app store or support checker.
- Several people have smartphones and you want local multiplayer without buying a separate controller.
- You value phone-based private information, such as hidden cards in a card game.
- You are comfortable checking connected-service, account and country restrictions.
Choose another built-in game when
- The vehicle’s catalog does not list AirConsole but does provide a suitable game through its own store.
- You need a title designed for one player or for the system’s native touchscreen and controls.
- Your vehicle’s current safety implementation allows a specific passenger-screen game that is not available through AirConsole.
- You prefer to avoid adding phone pairing or another account to a short stop.
Do not decide by brand or screen size alone
Two cars with similarly large touchscreens can have different operating systems, app stores, licenses and motion policies. Conversely, a lower-trim vehicle may qualify while a higher-trim sibling does not if the infotainment package differs. The decisive evidence is the current vehicle-level listing, not a generic advertisement or a video of another model.
Historical rollout figures and what they do—and do not—show
BMW Group said in its August 21, 2024 article that UNO Car Party launched over the air on August 21, 2024 and was available in more than 500,000 BMW and MINI vehicles. That is a historical rollout statement, not a current fleet count or a guarantee that every one of those vehicles still has access.
Volkswagen Group’s 2025 PAC-MAN announcement referred to more than 300,000 Volkswagen vehicles in Europe in the context of that announced availability. It should not be read as a current installed-base number or as evidence of worldwide eligibility. Neither figure is an independent measurement of adoption, satisfaction or safety outcomes.
A practical pre-trip checklist
- Write down the exact model, model year, VIN and infotainment software version.
- Search the in-car app store for AirConsole while parked.
- Confirm country eligibility and any connected-service package or license.
- Check whether the intended game is listed and note its player limit.
- Charge each phone, enable the required data connection and update the browser or app.
- Pair phones before the vehicle moves and assign a passenger to manage the lobby.
- Read the vehicle’s motion warning. If it says parked-only, stop; if it offers a passenger display, keep content out of the driver’s view.
- After a software or subscription change, repeat the eligibility check because the catalog can change.
There is no independent comparative statistic in the cited material for game quality, user satisfaction, adoption or safety outcomes. The reliable comparison is therefore operational: catalog, controls, player support, screen location, installation requirements, compatibility and the exact safety policy of the vehicle in front of you.
