Put a portable air purifier in the room where people spend the most time, then choose a spot where its intake and outlet have a clear path. Aim the cleaned airflow into occupied space without sending it directly from one person toward another. A central position can help, but clear airflow and suitable room capacity matter more than an exact spot.
Where should I put my air purifier?
Start with the room, not the corner. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) advises placing a cleaner in the room or rooms where people spend the most time. If someone particularly vulnerable to indoor pollutants or respiratory viruses lives in the home, prioritize the room where that person spends most of their time. A bedroom may be a sensible choice for an infant, an older adult, or someone with asthma.

A portable unit circulates the air it can reach; placement cannot make it serve a whole home if it is sized or positioned for only one room. EPA’s Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home recommends considering the room’s use and the unit’s airflow, while its respiratory-virus guidance emphasizes the space used by a particularly vulnerable person.
Where is the best place to put an air purifier in a bedroom?
Choose a spot in the bedroom where air can move freely to and from the unit, and where its outlet can send cleaned air into the occupied part of the room. Avoid putting it behind a door, tight against a curtain, or where bedding or furniture blocks its openings. If airflow feels like an uncomfortable draft, turn or reposition the unit so the stream is not aimed at the sleeper.

For someone isolating in a room during an active infection, EPA advises placing the cleaner in that room. Arrange it so the airflow does not blow directly from one person toward another. A portable purifier supplements ventilation and filtration; it is not a guarantee against infection.
Should an air purifier be in the middle of the room?
A central spot can help distribute airflow, but it is not mandatory. EPA’s respiratory-virus guidance says a central place works best in a room, but is not essential if airflow is free. In practice, a less central location with unobstructed intake and outlet can be better than the exact center if the middle is crowded or creates an awkward draft.

Check that the outlet is not aimed so cleaned air immediately returns to the intake before reaching the area you want to serve. EPA’s Residential Air Cleaners: A Technical Summary, 3rd Edition notes that with an identifiable pollutant source, placing the intake near that source can be appropriate. Without a particular source to target, direct output toward occupied space.
How far should an air purifier be from a wall?
There is no single clearance distance that applies to every purifier. Follow the manual for the specific model: manufacturers may specify how far the unit should be from walls or other objects. Whatever the stated distance, keep the intake and outlet open so air can circulate.

Can I put an air purifier next to a couch or curtain?
Only if the couch, curtain, or nearby objects do not obstruct the unit’s intake or outlet. A purifier tucked behind a couch or covered by a curtain may have restricted airflow; move it to a more open spot if the manual’s clearance cannot be maintained. EPA’s home guide notes that many cleaners are designed for floor placement while some are intended for tabletops. Use the location and orientation intended for your model, and keep its airflow clear either way.
Should an air purifier face the room or the person?
In ordinary use, aim the output so cleaned air reaches the occupied area rather than pointing it automatically at one person. If the stream is uncomfortable, redirect it. Where infection risk is a concern, avoid a setup that blows directly from one person toward another, as EPA advises.

- Air Quality Monitoring: This air purifier is designed with a built-in PM2.5 sensor and real-time display, eliminating the need for guesswork about air quality. In auto mode, when it detects a decline in air quality, the purifier with the indicator changing to green, blue, yellow or red, and the fan accelerating to purify the air more efficiently.
- Remarkable Filtration: Featuring an advanced filtration system, the air purifier effectively removes airborne particles (such as dust, pollen, pet dander, and smoke ). When activated, this air cleaner can refresh the atmosphere in a space up to 2400 sq ft / 223 m² every 30 minutes, ensuring you enjoy a fresh and comfortable air quality throughout the day in your home or office. (Note: For significant amounts of pet hair on floors or fabric surfaces, we recommend use other cleaning products.)
- 3-Stage Advanced Filtration: Our air filter combines a high-efficiency purification filter with 3 layers to can effectively filter out the impurities in the air. This high-performance system delivers thorough air purification, creating a healthier living environment for you and your loved one. (Note: The filter needs to be replaced every 3 to 6 months, and must not be cleaned with water or other liquids.)
If you are addressing a distinct pollutant source, consider the intake position as well: EPA’s technical summary says it can be placed near an identifiable source. Do not assume airflow direction alone will remove every kind of pollutant.

Measure the area the unit is expected to serve: multiply room length by width, and include the full open-plan area if air must circulate through connected spaces. EPA’s home guide provides the following illustrative minimum particle-removal CADR estimates for rooms with an eight-foot ceiling:

| Room area | Illustrative minimum CADR |
|---|---|
| 100 sq. ft. | 65 cfm |
| 200 sq. ft. | 130 cfm |
| 300 sq. ft. | 195 cfm |
| 400 sq. ft. | 260 cfm |
| 500 sq. ft. | 325 cfm |
| 600 sq. ft. | 390 cfm |
These are EPA estimates, not a guarantee of performance. For ceilings higher than eight feet, EPA advises considering a higher-capacity unit. If the area is larger than the available unit can serve, multiple cleaners may be an option. CADR concerns particle removal; it does not establish performance against gases or volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Placement cannot compensate for insufficient capacity or substitute for addressing ventilation and pollutant sources.
Should doors and windows be closed?
For wildfire smoke, EPA’s indoor air filtration guidance recommends closing doors and windows when it is safe to do so to maximize filtration in the room. That is smoke-specific advice, not a general rule to seal a room or abandon needed ventilation. A portable cleaner serves a limited area, and an open doorway can allow room air to mix with the rest of the home.
How should I run and maintain it?
- Use a fan speed and runtime that suit the situation: higher speeds and longer operation filter more air, while lower speeds may be quieter but filter less.
- During wildfire smoke conditions, EPA recommends continuous operation at the highest speed that is tolerable.
- Clean or replace filters as the manufacturer directs. A dirty or overloaded filter does not work well; check the exact purifier model before buying a replacement.
- If noise is a concern, check whether the manufacturer provides noise ratings and choose a tolerable setting without assuming that a quieter speed filters as much air.
No air cleaner removes all indoor air pollutants, and EPA does not certify or recommend specific purifier brands or models. A well-chosen spot improves circulation, but it is only one part of managing indoor air.
