Secure Remote Access Gateway Buying Guide for Organizations

A requirements-led guide to comparing remote access architectures, testing vendor claims, and building a shortlist that fits your users, applications, and operating model.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no single remote access gateway that fits every organization. Choose by mapping who needs access to which applications and assets, then compare VPN gateways, application proxies, ZTNA, and broader SSE/SASE services against your security, operational, and commercial requirements. A gateway is a design and procurement category—not a guarantee of zero trust or a product type with one standard feature set.

Start with the access problem, not the product category

Before comparing vendors, document the access paths you need to support and the systems that own them. The same organization may need different controls for an employee opening a private application, an administrator managing infrastructure, a contractor working with a business system, or a vendor connecting to operational technology (OT).

The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) advises establishing user, device, and internet foundations before designing ZTNA. Its guidance is a useful starting point for the inventory, but the architecture should be adapted to your environment. See NCSC’s ZTNA guidance and its illustrative reference architectures.

  • Users and access purposes: list employees, privileged administrators, contractors, vendors, and any other distinct groups. Record which applications or assets each group needs and why.
  • Applications and dependencies: identify private applications and SaaS, their protocols, owners, sensitivity, hosting locations, and dependencies. Note whether an application can be reached through an application proxy or needs network-level connectivity.
  • Devices and identity: document endpoint types, identity providers, SSO and MFA requirements, device identity and health signals, and who owns access policy.
  • Trust boundaries and operations: map network segments, internet exposure, cloud and on-premises environments, support responsibilities, and incident-response ownership.
  • Criticality and exceptions: record availability requirements, break-glass needs, maintenance constraints, and use cases—especially OT—that warrant separate requirements.

This inventory gives procurement and security teams a shared basis for the shortlist. It also helps prevent a product’s feature list from defining the organization’s access model by default.

Compare architectures, not marketing labels

VPN gateways, application proxies, ZTNA services, and broader SSE/SASE offerings can all play a role in remote access. Their capabilities vary by product; the category name alone does not establish application coverage, policy behavior, or security controls. The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) likewise notes that no single product or service achieves zero-trust goals. Use the GSA overview of zero trust architecture and its Zero Trust Architecture Buyer’s Guide, version 3.2 as architecture and procurement references, not as an endorsement of a particular gateway.

Pattern When to assess it What to compare
VPN gateway or VPN-as-a-Service Users need network-level connectivity, or applications and clients require protocols not covered by an application-layer option. Application reach; authentication for users and devices; segmentation behind the gateway; lateral-movement controls; capacity and resilience; legacy application compatibility; and operational burden.
Application proxy Access can be mediated at the application layer and the required protocols and client types are supported. Application coverage; identity integration; user experience; data flow; deployment and policy management per application.
ZTNA You want access decisions for specific applications to consider identity, device, and context rather than treating network connection alone as authorization. Signal quality; policy granularity; re-evaluation and revocation behavior; connector placement; private application and SaaS coverage; and access logging.
SSE/SASE or broader managed service You also need capabilities such as secure web gateway, cloud access security broker, firewall-as-a-service, or network convergence. Scope and integration; service availability; data residency; consolidated policy and logging; contract terms; and the practical cost of lock-in or exit.

These patterns are not mutually exclusive. A shortlist may combine them for different applications or user groups. The useful question is which pattern meets each documented need with the least unnecessary exposure and operational complexity.

Require explicit authorization and segmentation

Encryption protects transport, but it does not establish that a user or device should reach a particular resource. As the NCSC puts it: “Secure transport is a foundational requirement that enables ZTNA, but alone does not imply trust.” Its ZTNA implementation guidance says each segment’s access should be mediated through a connector, proxy, or network security device, and identifies large flat networks as an anti-pattern.

Ask vendors to show how their product enforces a decision for each access request and limits the scope of a granted connection. Assess whether access can be restricted to the smallest reasonable application or network segment, and what happens when an identity or device signal changes during a session.

  • What user, device, and contextual signals can a policy use, and how are they verified?
  • Can policy distinguish access to one application from access to a wider network? How are dependencies handled without creating broad access?
  • How quickly can an administrator revoke a user, device, or session, and what happens to an active connection after a policy change?
  • Can a compromised endpoint or connector reach unrelated systems? Ask the vendor to demonstrate the boundaries and the controls that prevent lateral movement.
  • Which components are publicly reachable? If connectors use outbound tunnels, what are the firewall requirements, and how are connectors hardened and their keys or certificates protected?

Evaluate the operating model and failure behavior

A gateway becomes part of the organization’s identity, network, endpoint, and incident-response systems. Assess the whole service—not only its access screen or tunnel. NCSC’s reference architectures include centrally collected access and security logs and infrastructure-as-code deployment for private application environments; these are useful design considerations, not universal product requirements.

  • Endpoints and identity: confirm supported operating systems and client types, SSO and MFA integration, device posture inputs, session lifetime controls, and the process for emergency or break-glass access.
  • Connectors and deployment: establish where connectors or proxies run, who patches and upgrades them, how they are hardened, and whether deployment and configuration can be automated and backed up.
  • Availability and recovery: identify dependencies on identity services, DNS, internet connectivity, cloud regions, and vendor control planes. Ask how high availability, failover, disaster recovery, and maintenance windows work, and what users can access during an interruption.
  • Logs and response: verify which access, policy, administrative, and security events are recorded; how logs reach your SIEM; how quickly they are available; and what support escalation looks like during an incident.
  • Data location and service terms: establish where policy data, identity information, and logs are stored or processed, which regions are available to your organization, and what support and recovery commitments are contractual.

Test performance and resilience with your workload

Headline throughput is not a substitute for a workload test. There is no vendor-neutral, current apples-to-apples performance or price comparison established here, so request evidence for your own applications, geography, user population, and traffic profile. Include the service’s dependencies and the operational effects of failure, not just a successful connection.

Exercise failover and service interruption, and confirm what happens when an identity service is unavailable, a connector is lost, a device becomes unhealthy, or policy changes during an active session. Capture the outcomes and acceptance criteria before comparing vendor claims.

Keep OT remote access as a distinct decision

Industrial environments can have different asset, availability, and vendor-access constraints from ordinary employee access. Treat OT requirements separately rather than assuming a general-purpose gateway is suitable. Cisco describes Secure Equipment Access as a hybrid-cloud OT remote-access service that uses a ZTNA gateway to create a controlled communication path to OT assets. Its data sheet describes subscription licensing by accessible OT assets or endpoints, lists one-, three-, five-, and seven-year terms, and describes Essentials and Advantage tiers and certain Cisco industrial-switch bundles or offers. These terms and eligibility can change; verify current product status and a quote. This is a product example for an OT-focused assessment, not a general recommendation.

When a VPN firewall appliance is the right thing to evaluate

A physical VPN firewall appliance may be relevant if the organization wants to self-host a VPN or firewall endpoint and has the staff and network design to operate it. Compare it with virtual and cloud-based options on gateway placement, endpoint support, segmentation, resilience, capacity under your workload, patching, and logging. NCSC includes VPN appliances and physical or virtual firewalls among possible access-mediation components in its implementation guidance. Buying hardware alone does not create zero trust: application-level authorization, segmentation, identity and device controls, and ongoing operation still need to be designed and verified.
