AIR Platforms’ Oct. 1, 2026 analysis assigned OpenAI a BB+ shadow rating and Anthropic a BBB shadow rating. In conventional credit-market terminology, BB+ is the highest speculative-grade category—often called “junk”—while BBB is investment grade. These are AIR’s modeled assessments, not ratings issued by Moody’s, S&P, Fitch, or another nationally recognized statistical rating organization (NRSRO). AIR says it is not registered with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission as an NRSRO. AIR’s analysis and disclosure explain how provisional the comparison is.
What AIR’s ratings mean—and what they do not
AIR’s grades place the two companies on opposite sides of the conventional investment-grade threshold in its own model. They do not establish that either company has received an official agency rating. A shadow rating is an analytical estimate, not a rating issued through the formal process of a registered credit-rating agency.

The distinction matters because the headline can sound definitive: OpenAI is not officially rated BB+ on the basis of AIR’s article, and Anthropic has not thereby been shown to hold an agency-issued BBB rating. Semafor reported on Sept. 8, 2026, that bankers for both companies were reportedly pressing for investment-grade ratings ahead of prospective IPOs; that report concerned possible future requests, not ratings already issued. Semafor’s report provides that context.

AIR says its Financials Builder is designed to assess companies that lack published financial statements. It combines risk profiles, publicly available financial information, sector characteristics and selected peer-company data to estimate proxy financial statements. Users can change the peer group and override estimated values, after which the system produces what AIR describes as a first-pass approximation of private-company creditworthiness.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For Anthropic, AIR says it used reported second-quarter revenue and an operating result around breakeven alongside its earlier estimates for assets and debt. The relevant figures in AIR’s article are blurred, and the company directs readers seeking detail to its representative. That means an outside reader cannot independently reconstruct the precise inputs or rating calculation from the published analysis.
Why OpenAI scored lower than Anthropic
AIR attributes the gap between the grades mainly to the income statement. In its account, OpenAI’s estimated losses relative to revenue and limited interest coverage weigh on its assessment. It says those weaknesses are partly offset by leverage it considers not extreme and a comparatively liquid mix of assets.

Anthropic’s BBB result is also conditional, rather than a settled view of long-term credit quality. AIR says it relies on one reported quarter with operating results near breakeven. It identifies profitability as the main weakness while describing interest coverage as very high. AIR argues that sustained near-breakeven performance would put Anthropic in a stronger position with agencies, but the cited quarter alone does not establish that the result is durable.
What could change the ratings picture
AIR says its analysis excludes proceeds from the companies’ planned IPOs. If a company sells new shares, the proceeds could add cash and equity and reduce some funding or refinancing pressure. They would not, by themselves, eliminate operating losses or improve weak interest coverage. The timing, size and pricing of any IPO were uncertain in the analysis.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

More complete disclosures could also alter the estimates. Audited financial statements could replace proxy figures partly derived from peers and model assumptions; AIR says that could move either assessment in either direction. Until those statements are available, the ratings remain sensitive to estimated inputs and modeling choices.

A stand-alone rating does not capture every possible source of risk in the AI infrastructure buildout. UBS Asset Management describes an interconnected financing network involving AI labs, cloud operators, data centers and compute suppliers, alongside guarantees, leases and other commitments. Its analysis argues that investors should examine counterparties and explicit contractual support, not only an issuer’s headline debt figure. UBS Asset Management’s discussion of AI debt networks sets out that broader lens.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
That network view does not make AIR’s two grades more authoritative; it identifies additional exposures that a company-by-company comparison may miss. A fuller credit assessment would distinguish reported results from estimates, evaluate operating cash generation against interest obligations, check liquidity and leverage, and trace material financing commitments across partners and infrastructure providers.
