Choose by cooking pattern, not by appliance popularity. For one or two people with very little counter space, a 3–4 litre air fryer is the most practical starting point when crisp snacks, paneer, tikka and small portions are your priority. Choose a 20–30 litre convection microwave if reheating rice, dal, curries and leftovers happens every day and you also want occasional baking or roasting. Choose an OTG when cakes, bread, pizza, grilling or larger batches matter more than a compact footprint and short preheating.
The short answer for a small Indian kitchen
These appliances overlap, but they are not interchangeable. An air fryer is a compact rapid hot-air cooker. An OTG (oven, toaster, grill) uses top and bottom heating elements. A convection microwave combines microwave heating with convection and, on combination models, grilling.

Choose an air fryer for small, crisp portions
A 3–4 litre model suits one or two people. It is the easiest fit when your regular jobs are reheating samosas or fries until crisp, roasting vegetables, cooking paneer or tikka, and making low-oil snacks. Mint’s 2026 comparison lists a typical 2–5 minute preheat, little to no oil, easy cleaning and a small counter requirement. The trade-off is a smaller chamber: a family-sized meal may require multiple batches.
Choose a convection microwave for reheating plus occasional baking
A 20–30 litre convection microwave fits the needs of many Indian households. Microwave heating makes rice, dal, curries and leftovers fast to warm, while convection adds baking, roasting, browning and crisping. The Consumer Education and Research Council (CERC) describes convection models as supporting microwave cooking, grilling, baking, roasting, browning and crisping. This is the most versatile single appliance when reheating is a daily task.

Choose an OTG for baking, grilling and larger batches
An OTG is the better match for cakes, bread, pizza, toast, grilling and batch cooking. Its top and bottom elements provide manual control and a larger chamber for trays, but Mint’s 2026 guidance puts typical preheating at 10–15 minutes. It also needs more counter space and remains hot for longer after cooking.
Shweta Ganjoo, chief content producer at HT Tech, captured the buying problem well: “Technology has made cooking easier and faster. At the same time, it has given us too many options to pick from, which can make shopping for right device a tad bit confusing.” A written list of your usual dishes and available counter area removes most of that confusion.
What each appliance actually does
Air fryer: concentrated hot air
A heating element warms air and a fan circulates it rapidly around a basket or tray. The moving air dries and browns exposed surfaces, which is why the appliance excels at crisping and roasting with little or no oil. It is efficient for small portions because you heat a small chamber, but food touching or stacked against other food will brown less evenly. The basket format also limits the size of cakes, pizzas and deep vessels you can use.

Top and bottom heating elements let you select heat direction and, on models that provide it, a grill or rotisserie function. The larger open chamber accepts trays and baking tins. This design is suited to recipes that depend on gradual, even baking and to foods that need surface browning from above. It does not provide microwave-speed reheating, so warming a bowl of curry takes longer than it would in a microwave.
Convection microwave: microwave speed with oven modes
Microwave energy heats food rapidly, making this format particularly useful for leftovers and defrosting. Convection circulates hot air for baking and roasting; combination programs can use microwave and convection or grill functions together. Read the manual before using cookware: containers and accessories suitable for microwave-only mode may not be suitable for grill or convection mode.

Compare the three on the decisions that matter
| Decision | Air fryer | OTG | Convection microwave |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best core jobs | Crisping, roasting, low-oil snacks and small portions | Baking, grilling, toasting, roasting and larger batches | Fast reheating and defrosting, plus baking, roasting, grilling, browning and crisping |
| Typical preheat | 2–5 minutes (Mint, 2026) | 10–15 minutes (Mint, 2026) | Varies by selected mode and model; no single figure is established here |
| Space requirement | Lowest counter demand of the three in typical use | Larger footprint and clearance requirement | Countertop footprint of a microwave-sized appliance plus ventilation clearance |
| Portion capacity | 3–4 litres for one or two people; 5–6 litres or more for a family (Mint, 2026) | Larger trays and batches; capacity depends on the chamber size | 20–30 litres is a practical range for many Indian households (Mint, 2026); CERC gives a broader 15–35 litre range |
| Reheating rice, dal and curry | Possible but slow and less convenient in a basket | Possible but slow compared with microwave heating | Fastest and most convenient through microwave mode |
| Baking and grilling | Works for small items, with chamber-size limits | Strongest fit for regular baking, grilling and pizza | Capable on convection or grill modes; check the model’s permitted accessories |
| Crisping | Core strength through rapid hot-air circulation | Can brown and grill, usually with longer heating | Available through convection, grill or combination programs |
| Cleaning | Small basket and tray are generally straightforward to wash | More interior area and racks to wipe after baking or grilling | Spills may occur across a larger cavity; follow the manual for rack and turntable care |
| Controls | Usually a compact temperature-and-time workflow | Manual element, temperature and timer choices | More modes and cookware rules to learn |
| Energy decision | Generally efficient for small portions | Longer preheat and larger heated cavity | Generally efficient for quick reheating |
There is no defensible universal electricity-cost winner without a controlled kilowatt-hour comparison under identical portions, temperatures and cooking times. The useful rule is task-based: use the air fryer for a small crisp portion and microwave mode for quick reheating rather than running a large oven cavity for either job.
Capacity: translate litres into meals and batches
One or two people
Mint’s 3–4 litre air-fryer guidance fits a couple cooking one component at a time: a serving of potatoes, paneer, vegetables or chicken pieces. Check the basket’s usable surface, not just the advertised litre figure. A tall basket can hold more volume but still have limited room for a single layer, which is the layer that crisps best.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A family using an air fryer
Mint places family-oriented air fryers at 5–6 litres or more. Even at that size, a mixed meal may need separate batches because vegetables, protein and breaded foods often need different temperatures or cooking times. Plan whether the second batch can wait without losing texture.
Microwave capacity
For many Indian households, 20–30 litres is the practical convection-microwave range identified by Mint. CERC gives a wider 15–35 litre range, so the right choice depends on the vessels you already use. Measure the diameter and height of your largest microwave-safe bowl and the tray needed for the baking you actually do; a nominal capacity is useful only if that vessel fits with the turntable or rack in place.
OTG tray planning
OTGs trade footprint for chamber and tray area. Before buying, measure the outside width, depth and height of the proposed unit and compare those dimensions with your counter and storage route. A cited Indian comparison lists a 40-litre digital OTG with rotisserie, convection, air-fryer and dehydrator functions, illustrating how a larger chamber can replace several smaller jobs while demanding more space.

How the choice changes by dish
| Your regular dish or task | Most suitable starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Reheating rice, dal, curry and leftovers every day | 20–30 litre convection microwave | Microwave heating is designed for fast reheating; convection adds occasional oven work |
| Fries, samosa, nuggets, paneer or tikka for one or two | 3–4 litre air fryer | Rapid hot air gives crisp surfaces with little oil and short preheat |
| Weekly cakes, bread or pizza | OTG | Larger trays and direct top/bottom heat suit regular baking |
| Occasional cake plus daily leftovers | Convection microwave | One appliance covers microwave reheating and convection baking |
| Large grilled or roasted batches | OTG | Larger chamber reduces the number of batches |
| Small roasted vegetables or snacks with minimal oil | Air fryer | Compact high-speed air circulation is the core function |
Counter space, clearance and ventilation
Measure the appliance footprint, then reserve open space around ventilation outlets and the door swing. Do not push any of the three against a wall, place it under a shelf that blocks hot air, or operate it inside a closed cabinet unless the manufacturer explicitly permits that installation. An air fryer may occupy the least counter area but still needs room to pull out its basket and release heat. An OTG needs clearance for its hot door and a safe place to set a tray. A convection microwave needs enough front clearance to open the door and enough surrounding ventilation for microwave, grill and convection modes.
Also check the power socket location, cable reach and the load on a multi-plug board. Keep steam-producing appliances away from the vents of another appliance, and leave a clear landing area for hot bowls, racks and baskets.
Preheating, speed and workflow
Air fryer workflow
Allow the typical 2–5 minute preheat listed by Mint when your recipe calls for it. Dry wet surfaces, avoid overcrowding, and shake or turn food when the recipe requires even exposure. Start with the smallest batch that gives a single layer; adding a second layer often extends cooking and softens the crust.
OTG workflow
Budget 10–15 minutes for the typical OTG preheat cited by Mint. Place the rack at the position specified by the recipe, select the required heating elements, and wait for the cavity to reach temperature before loading delicate batter or dough. Because the chamber and trays are larger, schedule the preheat while you prepare ingredients rather than treating it as an afterthought.
Convection-microwave workflow
Choose microwave, grill, convection or combination mode deliberately. Microwave mode is the direct route for leftovers and defrosting; convection or grill mode is for browning and oven-style cooking. Use only the rack, tray and cookware approved for that mode. A cited comparison lists an IFB 30-litre 30BRC2 convection microwave with convection, grill, rotisserie and combination cooking modes, showing why mode selection and accessory compatibility matter more as feature counts rise.

Controls and learning curve
An air fryer usually asks you to set time and temperature, making it quick to learn but less flexible for large cookware. An OTG exposes more manual choices: top element, bottom element, both, grill, temperature and timer. That control is valuable for baking and grilling but rewards recipe-specific practice. A convection microwave has the broadest menu and therefore the steepest learning curve; users must remember which containers are safe in microwave, grill and convection settings and how combination programs behave.
Keep the manual near the appliance for the first few weeks. Record successful settings for your own portions rather than copying a time blindly: basket fill, vessel material, starting temperature and food thickness all change results.

Air fryer
Let the basket and tray cool, remove crumbs, and wash removable parts according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Wipe the cavity and heating area without flooding electrical components. Cleaning immediately prevents oil and batter from hardening around the basket.
OTG
Remove racks and trays after cooling, brush away crumbs, and wipe grease from the floor and walls. Baked-on residue is harder to remove because the chamber is larger and direct heating can carbonise drips. Keep the heating elements dry and avoid abrasive tools that damage surfaces.

A buying checklist for a small Indian kitchen
- Write down seven days of cooking. Count reheats, crisp snacks, baking sessions, grilled dishes and meals requiring more than one batch.
- Measure the installation spot. Record counter width, depth, height, socket position, door-swing space and the clearance needed for ventilation.
- Set the portion target. Use 3–4 litres for one or two air-fryer users, 5–6 litres or more for a family, and start microwave shopping in the 20–30 litre range if reheating is central.
- Check your largest vessel and tray. Confirm that bowls, baking tins and racks fit in the usable cavity, not merely within the advertised external dimensions.
- Match functions to repeat jobs. Pay for convection, grill, rotisserie or combination modes only when you will use them; extra modes add decisions and cleaning.
- Confirm electrical and safety details. Read the manual for approved cookware, ventilation, grounding, cleaning and maximum operating times before installation.
- Plan the workflow. Decide where hot baskets and trays will rest and whether a second batch can wait without ruining the meal.
- Verify current price and service terms. Retail prices, stock, warranties and service availability change by seller and location, so check them at the time of purchase rather than relying on an old comparison.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Buying by litre number alone: Compare usable basket or tray area and your largest vessel; capacity printed on a box does not guarantee a single-layer crisp result.
- Overcrowding an air fryer: Cook in a looser layer or split the batch. Crowding blocks airflow and produces uneven browning.
- Skipping OTG preheat: Start the 10–15 minute preheat while measuring ingredients so cakes and dough enter a stable-temperature cavity.
- Using the wrong cookware in a microwave: Follow the model’s mode-specific instructions. Microwave-safe does not automatically mean grill- or convection-safe.
- Blocking vents: Reposition the appliance so hot air can escape and the door can open fully.
- Expecting one appliance to excel at every task: Pick the appliance that handles your most frequent job; use its secondary modes for occasional needs.
- Comparing electricity bills without controlling the task: Compare the same food, portion, temperature and time in kilowatt-hours if running cost is decisive. General labels such as efficient cannot identify a universal winner.
Practical decisions for three common homes
A single professional or student
If counter space is scarce and most meals are single portions, start with a 3–4 litre air fryer. Choose a convection microwave instead when reheating packed rice, dal or curry is more frequent than crisping snacks.
A couple that bakes occasionally
A 20–30 litre convection microwave offers the most balanced one-appliance setup when leftovers are daily but cakes or roasted dishes appear occasionally. Select an air fryer only if baking is rare and crisp snacks dominate.
A family that bakes or grills every week
An OTG is justified when tray size, pizza, bread, cakes or grilling determine the menu. Accept the larger footprint and 10–15 minute preheat as the cost of fewer batches and more direct control. Add a microwave later only if reheating speed becomes a separate daily requirement.

Bottom line
For a small Indian kitchen, the best appliance is the one that handles the task you repeat most while fitting your counter and vessels. Buy a 3–4 litre air fryer for compact, crisp cooking for one or two; a 20–30 litre convection microwave for fast reheating with occasional oven work; or an OTG for serious baking, grilling and larger batches. Capacity, clearance and workflow matter more than a longer feature list.
