Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA passing screenshot comparison means the captured pixels were close enough to an approved image under the test’s conditions. It does not prove the source file is correct, the interface behaves properly, or the expected image is itself right. AI visual QA is useful evidence about appearance—not a verdict on the whole implementation.
What a visual test actually checks
Screenshot regression testing captures a page or component in a defined state and compares that image with an approved baseline. Depending on the tool and its threshold, the comparison fails when the difference is large enough. Vitest describes reference, actual, and diff images; Cypress documents threshold-based comparison and review. Vitest’s visual regression testing guide and Cypress’s visual testing documentation explain these workflows.

The result answers a bounded question: does this captured output resemble the reference closely enough? It can help catch changes to layout, color, typography, and rendering. A difference is a signal to inspect, not an explanation of its cause.

Why a clean image can coexist with a broken UI
The test captured only one state
A screenshot shows a particular route, viewport, and moment. If the test never visits a responsive breakpoint, opens a menu, submits a form, or reaches an error state, a defect in that untested state can remain invisible. This is a limitation of what was captured, not proof that the comparison itself malfunctioned.

- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
The baseline may already be wrong
A baseline is an expected result, not an independent oracle. If it contains a defect—or if a changed image was approved without careful review—a broken implementation can match it. The baseline workflow is valuable only when people verify that the expected appearance is actually intended.
Pixels cannot establish behavior or business logic
A button can look correct and do nothing when clicked. A screen can render while showing incorrectly ordered data or failing a business requirement. Visual tests do not establish interaction or explain why the interface rendered as it did, as Vitest cautions in its visual regression testing guide.

- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
The reverse is also true: a functional assertion can pass while the visible result is misaligned, unreadable, or otherwise wrong. Functional and visual checks complement one another; neither replaces the other.
A threshold can permit a small but meaningful defect
Thresholds help tolerate insignificant pixel noise, but a comparison that permits some difference may also permit a real, small change. Choose tolerance based on the impact of the defect the test is meant to catch, rather than simply making failures less frequent. Cypress documents threshold-based failure in its visual testing guide.

Capture conditions can change the result
Browser and version, operating system, fonts, GPU, viewport, page data, loading state, timing, and animation can all affect captured pixels. A screenshot taken before content settles may show an intermediate state. Differences between environments can also create image diffs that are not caused by the code change. Vitest and Cypress both describe factors that can affect visual comparisons in their respective guides: Vitest and Cypress.
How to make visual QA more trustworthy
- Define the expected outcome and state. Specify the user-visible result, route, viewport, and interaction state the test should cover. Add separate captures for materially different states instead of expecting one screenshot to represent the whole interface.
- Standardize capture conditions. Keep browser, browser version, operating system or container, viewport, fonts, data, and animation consistent where feasible. A shared CI environment can reduce differences caused by the capture setup.
- Wait for meaningful conditions. Confirm that the relevant interaction has completed and the expected content is visible before taking a snapshot. Cypress recommends confirming page updates before capturing; a blind delay does not establish that the page is ready. See Cypress’s guidance.
- Inspect the reference, actual, and diff images. Use the comparison to locate a change, then investigate whether it reflects a defect, capture noise, or an intentional update. Vitest documents these three image types in its visual regression guide.
- Test behavior and accessibility separately. Use functional assertions for interactions and business requirements. Add accessibility checks for criteria a screenshot cannot establish, such as whether text contrast meets the applicable standard.
- Review every baseline update. Approve a new expected image only after confirming that the difference is intentional and acceptable. WebKit documents platform-specific expected output and the distinction between expected results and actual test failures in its testing documentation.
AI comparison and AI-generated screen evaluation are different
AI-assisted comparison of an application screenshot asks whether a rendered interface differs from a reference. Evaluating an AI-generated screen or mockup asks whether the image follows a prompt and meets design requirements. These are related visual tasks, but their evaluation criteria are not interchangeable.

- CURVED FOR ENHANCED ENGAGEMENT: An immersive viewing experience with a curved monitor that wraps more closely around your field of vision; It creates a wider view, enhancing depth perception and minimizing peripheral distraction
- SMOOTH PERFORMANCE FOR SEAMLESS CONTENT: Stay in the action when playing games, watching videos, or working on creative projects; The 100Hz refresh rate reduces lag and motion blur so you don't miss a thing in fast-paced moments¹
- MORE GAMING POWER: Gain the edge with optimizable game settings; Color and image contrast can be adjusted to see scenes more vividly and spot enemies hiding in the dark; Game Mode adjusts any game to fill the screen so you can view every detail²
- KEEP IT EASY ON THE EYES: Care for your eyes and stay comfortable, even during long sessions; Advanced eye comfort technology certified by TÜV reduces eye strain by minimizing blue light and reducing irritating screen flicker²
- INCREASED VERSATILITY: Connect to more; Plug devices straight into your monitor for increased flexibility, making your computing environment even more convenient
For generated screens, assess distinct dimensions: whether the requested screen and state are present, required components appear, layout hierarchy is coherent, text is legible, and controls look like plausible interaction affordances. Do not let a high overall visual score conceal a critical failure in one requirement. The OpenAI Cookbook’s image-evaluation example discusses independent metrics and gating requirements for instruction following and text rendering, alongside human feedback.

Tools generally differ in where capture and comparison happen, how teams manage baselines, and what browser or viewport coverage they support. Cypress distinguishes local or CI plugin workflows from hosted visual-testing services and names integrations including Applitools Eyes and Chromatic; these examples illustrate categories, not a universal recommendation. Check current capabilities and terms before choosing a tool. See Cypress’s visual testing documentation.
