AI Tracing: The Debugging Layer Between Prompts and Production

AI tracing records the intermediate events in an agent workflow, helping developers inspect tool calls, handoffs, retrieval, and failures beyond the final answer.

To debug an AI agent, inspect a trace of its intermediate steps—not only its final answer or a single error log. AI tracing records events such as model calls, tool use, handoffs, retrieval, and guardrails, giving developers a way to follow where a workflow went wrong. It is a practical layer that connects AI execution to familiar debugging and observability practices, not a formally established standard or one universal product category.

Why ordinary logs can miss an AI workflow failure

A conventional application log may tell you that a request failed, timed out, or returned an unexpected result. For an agent workflow, that may not show which intermediate event caused the outcome: a model generation, a tool invocation, a handoff to another agent, a retrieval operation, or a guardrail event.

Tracing makes those recorded events inspectable in sequence. OpenAI’s Agents SDK documentation describes traces containing generations, tool calls, handoffs, guardrails, and custom events; Microsoft Foundry documents telemetry for LLM calls, tool invocations, and agent decision flows. These records help locate a failure in the workflow, but they should not be mistaken for a complete view of a model’s private reasoning.

What an AI trace helps you inspect

  • Model activity: Which recorded generation preceded an unexpected response.
  • Tool interactions: Whether a tool was called, what its recorded result was, and what happened next.
  • Workflow transitions: Handoffs between agents or other changes in control flow.
  • Retrieval and guardrails: Where documented retrieval steps or guardrail events fit into the sequence.
  • Custom events: Application-specific milestones that a team instruments for its own workflow.

Coverage depends on what the SDK, framework, and instrumentation capture. A trace can show recorded events and their relationships; it does not automatically explain every model decision or establish that a particular event caused a failure.

How to find the step behind an unexpected result

  1. Open the trace for the affected run. Use the tracing view provided by your SDK or observability platform; OpenAI documents a trace dashboard for debugging, visualization, and monitoring.
  2. Follow the event sequence. Locate the model generation, tool call, handoff, retrieval step, or guardrail event closest to the unexpected result.
  3. Inspect the recorded inputs and outputs. Compare the relevant event’s recorded context and result with what the next workflow step received. The available detail depends on instrumentation and data-handling settings.
  4. Check transitions and failures. Look for a failed or unexpected tool result, an unanticipated handoff, or a later step that diverges from the expected workflow.
  5. Reproduce and refine instrumentation. If the trace does not distinguish the suspected cause, add suitable custom events or improve framework instrumentation, then compare a reproduced run.

This approach is useful in development and production triage. OpenAI describes tracing for debugging and monitoring workflows, while Microsoft describes it for troubleshooting agents and monitoring performance.

Documented tracing options differ in coverage and deployment

The following are vendor-documented capabilities, not results of independent comparative testing. Feature availability, framework support, privacy terms, and maturity can change; check the linked documentation for the implementation you plan to use.

Option Documented trace coverage and workflow Interoperability or deployment notes
OpenAI Agents SDK Traces can include LLM generations, tool calls, handoffs, guardrails, and custom events. The dashboard supports debugging, visualization, and monitoring. Tracing is unavailable for organizations using OpenAI APIs under a Zero Data Retention policy, according to the documentation. Check current policy and implementation requirements.
LangSmith LangChain documents agent tracing, monitoring, online evaluations, and trajectory monitoring. Its documentation describes OpenTelemetry support, integrations with several SDKs and custom implementations, and managed, BYOC, and self-hosted deployment options.
Amazon OpenSearch Service AWS describes hierarchical traces covering orchestration, model calls, tool use, and retrieval. AWS says its AI observability integrates OpenTelemetry and GenAI semantic conventions.
Microsoft Foundry Microsoft documents telemetry spanning LLM calls, tool calls, and agent decision flows, with tracing for several agent frameworks. Some integrations or semantic-convention support are identified as preview or experimental in Microsoft’s documentation; verify the current status before relying on them.

How to choose an observability layer

Start with the failure modes and frameworks in your own application, rather than choosing by feature list alone. Compare the documented capabilities that affect whether a trace will help with your actual debugging work:

  • Trace coverage: Does it capture the events you need—generations, tools, handoffs, retrieval, guardrails, and any application-specific events?
  • Instrumentation compatibility: Does it support your SDK and agent framework? Is instrumentation automatic, manual, or based on OpenTelemetry?
  • Debugging workflow: Can developers visualize a run, search or filter traces, inspect workflow trajectories, and triage errors?
  • Production oversight: Are monitoring, latency or cost views, alerts, and evaluation features documented for your use case?
  • Deployment and data handling: Does the documented managed, cloud, bring-your-own-cloud, or self-hosted model fit your requirements? Review what telemetry is captured and where it is handled.
  • Maturity: Identify stable support separately from features described as preview or experimental.

Vendor documentation establishes each provider’s stated capabilities; it does not establish comparative performance or a universal winner. A product’s availability of a trace view also does not guarantee that the right data will be captured: instrumentation and data policies matter.

Tracing connects AI workflows to established observability

AI-specific tracing does not need to replace the telemetry infrastructure a team already uses. LangSmith documents OpenTelemetry tracing support, and AWS describes OpenSearch AI observability as integrated with OpenTelemetry and GenAI semantic conventions. This can make AI workflow events part of a broader observability approach, subject to the integrations and conventions supported by the chosen tools.

Microsoft’s documentation also illustrates why compatibility should be checked at the framework and feature level: it describes tracing across several agent frameworks while marking some integrations or conventions as preview or experimental. Treat those status labels as part of the deployment decision, not as a minor detail.

What this layer does—and does not—mean

AI tracing is best understood as instrumentation that makes an agent’s recorded execution inspectable. It can help answer where a workflow took an unexpected turn and provide evidence for debugging, monitoring, or evaluation. It is not a universal debugger standard, a guarantee of complete visibility into a model, or proof that one observability platform is better than another.
