These controls are different from deleting old conversations, clearing memories, or preventing safety and legal processing. They generally apply going forward; switching off improvement does not remove information that may already have been incorporated into a model.

What each privacy setting actually changes
AI services expose several controls that sound alike but govern different parts of the data lifecycle. Choosing the right one depends on whether you want to prevent model improvement, hide a conversation from your history, stop personalization, or remove information already stored in your account.
- Model-improvement or training opt-out: tells the service not to use eligible new conversations to improve its models. It is normally a forward-looking choice, not a way to extract information from models trained previously.
- Chat history: controls whether you can see and reopen a conversation in the account interface. A chat can remain in history even when it is excluded from model improvement.
- Memory and personalization: controls information saved for future responses, such as preferences or facts associated with your account. Disabling training does not automatically erase existing memories.
- Deletion: removes conversations or activity from the account according to the provider’s deletion process. Deletion is a separate action from disabling future model improvement.
- Temporary or incognito modes: are designed for a single session and generally avoid ordinary history or improvement pathways, but each provider documents different retention and safety practices.
Even when a conversation is not used to train a model, a provider may still process it for safety, abuse prevention, service operation, security, or legal compliance. Do not treat a temporary mode as a promise of absolute secrecy or as a substitute for a confidentiality agreement.

Menu names and availability can differ between web, mobile, business workspaces, countries, and staged releases. If a label is missing, use the service’s current privacy or data-controls screen rather than assuming another setting has the same effect.
ChatGPT: stop model improvement and use Temporary Chat
Turn off future model improvement
- Open ChatGPT and select your account menu.
- Go to Settings, then open Data Controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
- Read the confirmation text and leave the switch off before starting the conversation you want excluded.
This switch is separate from ordinary chat history. New eligible chats can continue to appear in your history for you to revisit while being excluded from OpenAI model improvement under the setting. It does not erase previous chats, remove memories, or reverse use that may have occurred before the change.
Use Temporary Chat for a sensitive one-off prompt
- Start a new conversation.
- Select the Temporary Chat option in the new-chat interface. The exact control can move between web and mobile versions.
- Confirm that the temporary indicator is visible before entering sensitive text.
- End the conversation when finished; do not copy the same material into a normal chat afterward.
OpenAI states that Temporary Chats do not appear in chat history, do not create memories, and are not used to improve its models. OpenAI also states that Temporary Chats are retained for 30 days for safety before deletion. That retention allows safety and abuse-prevention processing, so “temporary” does not mean immediate erasure.

Review memory, personalization, and stored data separately
If ChatGPT has saved a preference or personal fact, inspect the memory or personalization controls and delete individual memories or clear them as appropriate. Use the account’s export and deletion tools when you need a copy of your data or want to remove stored conversations. The model-improvement switch is not an erasure command, and deleting a chat is not the same as clearing every memory derived from it.
Gemini: control Gemini Apps Activity and choose Temporary Chat
Review Gemini Apps Activity
- Open Gemini or the privacy controls in your Google Account.
- Find Gemini Apps Activity; Google also presents related activity and Keep activity controls in account settings.
- Read whether activity is being kept for continuity, personalization, service improvement, or training generative AI models.
- Choose the activity, retention, or auto-delete option that matches your needs, then save the change.
Gemini’s activity control combines storage and improvement considerations more closely than ChatGPT’s separate training switch. Keeping activity can support continuity across conversations, while activity may also be used consistently with the service to improve Google’s services, including training generative AI models. Turning activity off or deleting it does not make earlier conversations disappear from every system instantly; follow the deletion status shown in your account.
Use Temporary Chat for a single sensitive question
- Open a new Gemini conversation.
- Select Temporary Chat before typing the prompt. The location can differ by app version and account.
- Check that the temporary state is shown, then ask only what is necessary.
- When done, close the temporary conversation instead of continuing in a regular chat.
Google says Temporary Chats do not appear in recent chats or Gemini Apps Activity. Google also says they are not used to personalize your Gemini experience or train Google’s AI models. The cited Google documentation does not establish one universal retention period for all users, regions, plans, or processing workflows, so inspect the retention information displayed for your account rather than relying on a number from another user.

Delete earlier activity when needed
Temporary Chat does not delete previous Gemini activity. Open Gemini Apps Activity or the linked Google Account activity page, select the relevant entries, and use the available delete or auto-delete controls. If a work or school administrator manages Gemini, an individual account setting may be unavailable or overridden by the organization.

Claude: disable Model Improvement and use Incognito
Change the Model Improvement choice
- Open Claude and open Settings.
- Go to Privacy (the wording can vary by interface).
- Review the Model Improvement choice and turn it off if you do not want eligible future conversations or coding sessions used to improve Claude.
- Save the setting and check it again after switching devices or joining a different workspace.
Anthropic explains that the data covered by this choice can include the related conversation and associated preferences. The choice applies to future eligible use; it does not promise that information already used in model development can be withdrawn from a trained model.
Use Incognito for a sensitive session
- Start a new Claude conversation.
- Choose Incognito before entering the prompt.
- Verify the Incognito indicator remains active while you work.
- Delete the conversation afterward if the interface offers it and your policy requires account-level removal.
Anthropic states that Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even when Model Improvement is enabled. Incognito is therefore a session-level safeguard, not a replacement for reviewing the account-wide privacy choice.

Understand Claude deletion and retention
Anthropic states that deleting a chat means it will not be used to train future models. Where improvement is allowed, Anthropic says de-identified data may be retained for up to five years. That figure is a maximum described by Anthropic for de-identified improvement data, not a promise that every conversation remains for that entire period or that Incognito data follows the same path.

Classify the information first
Ask what would happen if the text appeared in an internal log or was disclosed to a service provider. Public material and a generic writing question are low risk. Customer records, unpublished code, employment files, health details, financial data, credentials, legal strategy, and government identifiers require a higher standard. If the task can be completed without the sensitive fields, remove them instead of relying on a setting.

Prepare the account
- Set the account-wide model-improvement choice to off where available.
- Review and clear memories or personalization entries that are no longer appropriate.
- Check whether a business, education, or family administrator controls the setting.
- Confirm the current menu labels after major app updates or when changing regions.
Prepare the prompt
- Replace names, email addresses, account numbers, exact dates of birth, and other identifiers with neutral placeholders.
- Remove passwords, API keys, recovery codes, private keys, and access tokens entirely; do not paste them even into a temporary mode.
- Provide the smallest excerpt needed to answer the question.
- For code, substitute sample values and verify that comments do not contain secrets.
Choose the session mode
Use ChatGPT Temporary Chat, Gemini Temporary Chat, or Claude Incognito for a one-off sensitive task. If you need a continuing project, understand that a normal chat may be stored for continuity even after model improvement is disabled. Keep the project in a controlled enterprise environment when your organization requires contractual handling, audit logs, or regional data guarantees.

Clean up afterward
Delete the ordinary chat or account activity if it was created accidentally, clear any memory that was saved, and remove copied text from browser history, notes, prompt libraries, and team channels. Deleting an AI conversation does not delete a document, attachment, or secret that you pasted elsewhere.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
“I turned off training, so my old chats are gone.”
They are not necessarily gone. A training opt-out and history deletion are different controls. Open the service’s history or activity manager and delete prior entries separately; then inspect memory or personalization for information saved from those chats.
“I used a temporary mode, so no one can process the text.”
Temporary modes still permit the safety, security, operational, and legal processing described by each provider. OpenAI documents 30 days of safety retention for ChatGPT Temporary Chat; other services may describe different handling. Do not enter secrets or regulated data solely because a temporary label is visible.

“The switch is missing on my work account.”
Workspace administrators, regional availability, account type, or a staged release may change the screen. Ask the administrator which policy applies and avoid assuming that a personal-account instruction carries over to the managed workspace.
“I changed the setting on my phone, but the web app behaves differently.”
Sign out and back in, check the same account and workspace, and inspect the privacy screen in both interfaces. A setting can be account-wide while a temporary-mode control is selected separately for each conversation.
“I pasted confidential text before enabling the setting.”
Stop using that conversation, delete it through the service’s history or activity controls, clear any saved memory, and notify your security or privacy contact if the material was regulated or credential-like. A later opt-out cannot guarantee removal from prior processing.
