AI-generated music is rapidly crowding the stream of new uploads, especially on Deezer, but the available evidence does not show that it has taken a comparable share of listening, recommendations or royalties. Deezer reported nearly 75,000 AI-generated tracks per day—about 44% of its daily uploads—in April 2026, then said AI music exceeded half of daily uploads in July. Those are supply figures from one service. A separate 2026 study of Spotify activity found that most AI tracks in its dataset received few or no plays and were rarely recommended.
What “crowding out” means here
Streaming platforms contain several different funnels: music delivered to a service, music accepted into its catalog, tracks surfaced by search or recommendation systems, and songs that people actually play. A surge at the upload stage does not prove displacement at the listening or royalty stage.

- Uploads: how many new tracks arrive each day.
- Discovery: whether algorithms, editors or searches put those tracks in front of listeners.
- Engagement: plays, repeat listening and playlist additions.
- Economics: the royalties generated by that engagement.
The strongest current evidence concerns uploads. Evidence about plays and recommendations points in a different direction, and no cited source quantifies a platform-wide loss of human artists’ royalties caused by AI music.
Deezer’s AI uploads have grown from a large minority to a majority
April 2026: 44% of daily uploads
In an April 20, 2026 release, Deezer said it was receiving nearly 75,000 AI-generated tracks every day, representing about 44% of its daily uploads. The company described this as an upload-volume measurement, not a share of listening or revenue. Deezer’s April announcement also said its detection technology was available to organizations in the music ecosystem.

July 2026: more than half of daily uploads
Deezer’s July 2026 update said AI-generated music had exceeded 50% of the service’s daily uploads. The newer figure indicates that the proportion of incoming tracks continued to rise, but it still describes Deezer’s intake rather than the composition of its listeners’ queues or the industry as a whole. Most AI tracks in one Spotify study did not attract attention
A June 16, 2026 preprint, An Empirical Analysis of AI Slop in Music Streaming, examined activity in a Spotify dataset. The authors reported that 93% of the AI music they analyzed received few or no plays and was rarely recommended. That percentage belongs to the study’s dataset and methods; it is not a measured rate for every AI track on Spotify, every listener, or other services. Read the preprint on arXiv.

Placed beside Deezer’s upload numbers, the result illustrates why “AI is taking over streaming” is too broad. A service can receive enormous quantities of automatically generated files while recommendation systems and listener behavior concentrate attention on a much smaller set of releases.
Listeners may not reliably hear the difference
Deezer reported that 97% of participants in a blind test could not distinguish AI-generated music from human-made music. The test used two AI songs and one human-made song, so the result describes that narrowly designed exercise—not all genres, models, listeners or listening conditions. Deezer’s account of the test is the source for the figure.

For listeners, this means that audible judgment alone may be unreliable, particularly for functional music such as background, focus or ambient tracks. It does not mean that AI music performs equally well once people choose what to play, follow an artist or return to a song.
How Deezer and Spotify are responding
The services are addressing different parts of the problem. Their announcements should not be read as a common industry policy or as evidence of an AI share of streams.

Deezer’s labeling and recommendation policy is described in its own announcements; it should not be assumed to apply on Spotify or elsewhere. Spotify says royalties are based on listener engagement and that music is treated equally regardless of the production tools used. Its artificial-streaming policy targets manipulation and fraudulent activity rather than the mere use of AI in making a track. Consequently, the cited evidence cannot answer how much money human artists have lost to AI-generated releases across services. To establish that claim would require comparable, platform-wide data on AI identification, plays, recommendation exposure and royalty allocation—data not provided by these sources.
What this means for different readers
Listeners
- Expect a much larger supply of AI-made tracks in search results and new-release feeds, especially on Deezer.
- Use a platform’s explicit AI labels where available; do not assume an unlabeled track is human-made.
- Remember that a high upload share does not imply that most of your listening is AI-generated.
Artists and rights holders
- Protect artist profiles and monitor releases for unauthorized voice impersonation or misattribution.
- Review each service’s current rules because detection, labels, recommendation treatment and abuse policies differ.
- Do not infer royalty losses from upload statistics alone; engagement data is the economically relevant measure.
Platforms and distributors
- Separate fully AI-generated works from human-led recordings that use AI tools during production.
- Make labels understandable at the point of listening and explain how recommendation systems treat tagged tracks.
- Publish methods and denominators when reporting AI figures so uploads, plays and royalties are not conflated.
The accurate bottom line on the headline
AI-generated music is already crowding the incoming catalog: Deezer’s own figures moved from about 44% of daily uploads in April 2026 to more than half in July. That is a significant supply-side change. It is not proof that AI has crowded human music out of people’s listening, recommendations or earnings. The best available Spotify-specific study instead found that most AI tracks in its dataset attracted little or no attention, while platform policies are increasingly focused on labeling, identity protection and artificial-streaming abuse.
