BabyX is a hyper-realistic computer-generated infant created by Dr Mark Sagar and Soul Machines. It appears on a screen, perceives a social partner’s voice, gestures and facial expressions, and responds with modeled infant-like behaviors such as smiling, laughing, crying and frustration. Researchers use it as a controllable model for studying caregiver–infant interaction—not as a conscious or biologically complete baby.
What is BabyX?
BabyX is an interactive virtual infant unveiled by the University of Auckland in 2017. Mark Sagar’s team and Soul Machines built it to combine a realistic digital face and body with computational models of perception, emotion and social behavior.

The system runs on a computer display rather than in a physical robot. Cameras and microphones provide video and audio input, while its simulated “human brain” processes the interaction and generates a response. Depending on the exchange, BabyX can smile, laugh, cry, show frustration, move its attention and react to objects in a simulated environment.
“Astonishingly real” describes the visual and interactive effect. BabyX is not a human infant, and the published descriptions do not establish consciousness, subjective feelings or a complete model of infant development.
#1 Best Overall
- Perfect Size Baby Doll: The baby dolls for 2 year old girls is 16 inches, it is very suitable for children to hug and carry. It is also a good opportunity for children to learn how to hold a baby.
- Crying Baby Dolls with different sounds: In order to provide the best experience, this doll has 6 different voices. She can make sounds of drinking milk, giggle, crying, humming, and make the sounds of ""papa"" and ""mama"".
- Complete baby doll set: Beside talking babydoll, we also have accessories such as biscuits, rice bowls, forks, plates, spoons, baby bottles, and pacifiers. The doll’s clothes can be taken off for replacement and cleaned. The electric toilet can also make a flushing sound.
- Safe and soft material: The baby pink doll is made of safe material, does not contain bisphenol, is environmentally friendly, and is safe enough for children. More importantly, all the accessories do not have sharp edges, so your child will not be harmed.
- Educational Doll: This cute baby doll that makes sounds allows children to learn the little knowledge of life while playing. When the children learn to take care of the doll like a mother, it helps them develop basic life skills, social skills and emotional skills.
How BabyX responds and “learns”
Real-time social input
BabyX is designed to detect elements of a partner’s behavior—such as speech, gaze, gestures and facial expressions—and answer them in real time. This makes the interaction two-way: a caregiver’s behavior can alter the virtual infant, while the infant’s simulated signals can alter the caregiver’s next response.
What learning means here
Some descriptions say the system can learn words and actions. In this context, “learn” refers to adapting computational models from interaction, not to human-like understanding, autobiographical memory or conscious experience. A 2021 ethics paper characterized the models as still fairly simple at that time, so claims should be read as descriptions of engineered capabilities rather than proof of child-like learning.
What scientists are using BabyX to study
Closing the caregiver-response loop
Developmental psychologists have long documented how infants respond to subtle changes in where caregivers look, what they say and how they say it. Professor Annette Henderson, director of the University of Auckland Early Learning Laboratory, summarized the missing half of that picture: “However, very little is known about how changes in babies’ behaviour affects their caregivers’ responses – we aim to close that loop.”

BabyX lets researchers vary an infant’s signals systematically and observe how adults respond. The 2026 paper Completing the loop with BabyX presents this as an opportunity to investigate social contingency—the way each partner’s behavior continuously shapes the other’s—not as a solved account of infant development.
The University of Auckland caregiver study
A University of Auckland announcement dated 24 May 2024 described a study in which primary caregivers would interact with BabyX through digital games, including puzzles. The announcement said the team sought 80 caregivers of children aged 12 to 36 months. That was a recruitment target, not a completed sample size or a study result. The Early Learning Lab describes the broader aim as identifying which infant behaviors initiate and maintain caregiver responsiveness, with possible implications for interventions that support responsive parenting. Recruitment status should be checked on the lab’s current-studies page before treating it as an open invitation.
Modeling turn-taking
A peer-reviewed article by Sagar and colleagues, published online in 2022 and in a 2023 issue of the Journal of the Royal Society of New Zealand, presents BabyX as an 18-month-old virtual infant model for nonverbal cooperation and turn-taking. The authors report patterns in human infant–caregiver interactions that were consistent with their BabyX model and describe the model as an initial foundation for more comprehensive work. This is early-stage modeling evidence, not proof that BabyX develops or learns as a child does.

BabyX versus a real infant
The useful comparison is methodological: BabyX supplies a manipulable simulation, while observations of real babies provide the developmental context against which that simulation can be evaluated.

Can BabyX really laugh or cry?
It can produce infant-like laughing and crying behaviors as outputs of its audiovisual and behavioral models. Those outputs may be convincing to a person interacting with the system, but they are not evidence that BabyX feels amusement, distress or frustration. The distinction matters when interpreting both demonstrations and experiments: the visible behavior belongs to the simulation, while any measured emotional or caregiving response belongs to the human participant.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a virtual infant is useful in experiments
- Controlled variation: researchers can change an infant signal or its timing without exposing a human baby to repeated experimental manipulation.
- Repeatability: multiple participants can encounter closely matched scenarios, making caregiver responses easier to compare.
- Two-way observation: the model can be adjusted to test how its behavior changes an adult’s attention, language or turn-taking.
- Bridge between theory and data: predictions from a computational model can be compared with recordings of real infant–caregiver interaction.
These advantages do not remove the need to validate findings with human participants. A reaction to BabyX may reflect the simulation’s appearance, timing or limited repertoire rather than a response that would occur with a living child.

What BabyX does not demonstrate
- It does not demonstrate that a machine is conscious or has feelings.
- It does not establish that its internal models understand language or actions in the same way a child does.
- It does not reproduce the full biological, social and developmental context of infancy.
- It does not turn a recruitment target into evidence of an outcome; no study outcome statistic or performance benchmark is established by the cited publications.
- It is not documented in these sources as a consumer product, retail baby or publicly purchasable platform.
Ethical questions around interacting with BabyX
The 2021 article The ethics of interaction with neurorobotic agents: a case study with BabyX discusses ethical issues raised by interaction with neurorobotic agents. It is an ethics analysis, not evidence that BabyX users were harmed or that a particular risk has been measured. Questions include whether highly lifelike behavior can encourage people to project feelings onto a system, how participants should be informed about its artificial nature, and how recordings of caregivers should be handled. Those questions are reasons for careful study design and consent, not proof that the virtual infant is sentient.
The bottom line on BabyX
BabyX is best understood as an embodied, interactive research model: realistic enough to elicit naturalistic caregiver responses, yet controllable enough for researchers to vary an infant’s signals. Its laughs, cries and apparent learning are outputs of computational models. The scientific promise lies in testing the two-way dynamics of caregiver–infant interaction and then checking what those observations mean against evidence from real babies—not in replacing human infants or proving that software has a mind.
