Their documented approaches differ: ContextForge focuses on project and space context in a Claude/MCP workflow, Mem0 offers persistent-memory operations with managed and open-source paths, and Zep centers on temporal context graphs. Choose by the context your application must retain and the way your team will operate it, then test shortlisted options against your own data and questions.
How the three memory layers differ
“AI memory layer” can mean several things: a place to keep project knowledge, an API for adding and searching persistent memories, or a system that models how entities and facts change over time. The products’ documentation emphasizes different parts of that problem, so they should not be treated as interchangeable versions of one design.

| Product | Documented approach | Integration emphasis | Operating model | Question to test |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ContextForge | Project and space knowledge, semantic search, Git synchronization, snapshots, and team collaboration | MCP integration with Claude Desktop and Claude Code | Managed SaaS; documentation labels it beta | Does project and Git context solve the specific assistant workflow? |
| Mem0 | Adding and searching persistent memories for AI agents | Memory operations and API; MCP is also documented | Managed platform or open-source software that you operate with your own storage and provider APIs | Does its memory operation and scope model suit the application? |
| Zep | Unified context layer organized around temporal Context Graphs and served through Context Lake | Python, TypeScript, and Go SDKs; agent-framework guidance and governance material | Zep Cloud or community/self-host routes are described in vendor materials; confirm current options | Does temporal and entity context justify the graph and service complexity? |
This is a comparison of documented positioning, not a hands-on product test. See the ContextForge documentation, Mem0 documentation, and Zep v3 documentation for current capabilities and compatibility.
Which one fits your workload?
Evaluate ContextForge for project-scoped Claude context
ContextForge is the clearest fit to evaluate when a developer wants project knowledge to follow a Claude workflow through MCP. Its documented feature set includes semantic search, Git synchronization, project or space organization, snapshots, and team collaboration. Its documentation says: “ContextForge is currently in beta. Features may change and you may encounter bugs.” Treat that beta status as a practical factor: check the current state of the features your workflow depends on before building around them. #1 Best Overall
- EVOLUTION RYZEN AI MAX+ 395 MINI PC - GMKtec EVO-X2 is the next evolution in AI mini PC Ryzen Strix Halo series. Thanks to AMD Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT) the core-count is effectively doubled, to 32 threads. Ryzen AI Max+ 395 has 64 MB of L3 cache and can boost up to 5.1 GHz, depending on the workload. The Ryzen AI Max+ 395 is currently rated as the "most powerful x86 APU" on the market for AI computing.
- AI NPU with XDNA 2 ARCHITECTURE - Powered by 16 “Zen 5” CPU cores, 50+ peak AI TOPS XDNA 2 NPU and a truly massive integrated GPU driven by 40 AMD RDNA 3.5 CUs, the Ryzen AI MAX+ 395 is a transformative upgrade and delivers a significant performance boost over the competition. The Ryzen AI Max+ 395 excels in consumer AI workloads like the llama.cpp-powered application: LM Studio. Shaping up to be the must-have app for client LLM workloads, LM Studio allows users to locally run the latest language model without any technical knowledge required and unleash their creativity and productivity.
- AMD RADEON 8090S iGPU GAMING PC - The AMD Radeon RX 8060S offers all 40 CUs with up to 2.9 GHz graphics clock and uses the new RDNA 3.5 architecture. The powerful iGPU is positioned between an RTX 4060 and 4070 laptop GPU and therefore enables gaming in FHD at maximum details in most demanding games. The 8060S can also utilize the full 128GB pool, which is perfect for running LLMs such as Deepseek 70B Q8, which runs comfortably on this machine.
- EIGHT CHANNEL LPDDR5X - LPDDR5X is a new ground breaking memory small form factor installed on-board. With blazing speeds up to to 8000MT/s, it runs 1.5x faster than the DDR5 SODIMMs; 90% better performance over DDR5 SODIMMs in video conferencing and photo editing; 30% better performance in productivity apps; 12% better performance in digital content workloads.
- QUAD SCREEN 8K DISPLAY SUPPORT - EVO-X2 AI Mini PC support 4-screen 4K/8K output via HDMI 2.1 (8K@60Hz), DisplayPort 1.4 (4K@60Hz), and dual USB 4 40Gbps Transfer speed (supporting PD3.0/DP1.4/DATA). Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.
Evaluate Mem0 for persistent-memory operations across an application
Mem0’s documented framing is an API and platform for adding and searching persistent memories for agents. Its operating choice matters: the managed service provides dashboard visibility and workspace quotas, while the open-source path leaves storage under your control and relies on your infrastructure and provider APIs. Confirm current APIs, plans, quotas, and deployment requirements against the application you intend to build. Mem0 documentation
Evaluate Zep for time-aware entity context
Zep’s v3 documentation describes temporal Context Graphs as part of a broader context layer, with Context Lake, SDKs, framework guidance, and governance material. It also identifies Graphiti as an open-source temporal knowledge graph framework. This approach is worth evaluating when representing entities and facts over time is central to the application; determine whether that structure improves your results enough to justify its integration and operational requirements. Benchmark headlines from different vendors are not a controlled contest. The figures below come from vendor or author publications with differing methods and configurations; they cannot establish which product will perform best for your workload.
- Mem0’s September 3, 2026 comparison reports 93.4% overall accuracy on LongMemEval as its April 2026 result. The same page gives Zep’s figure as 71.2% under its cited GPT-4o comparison and describes setup and reporting qualifications.
- The same Mem0 comparison reports 91.6% overall accuracy on LoCoMo for its April 2026 algorithm, contrasts it with Zep configurations, and notes an active methodology dispute.
- Mem0’s comparison attributes a 94.8% Deep Memory Retrieval accuracy result to Zep. It says Mem0 had not published a DMR result there and characterizes DMR as an older, shorter-horizon benchmark.
- A 2025 Mem0-author preprint reports a 26% relative improvement in an LLM-as-a-Judge metric for its research system. It also reports 91% lower p95 latency and more than 90% token-cost savings against its full-context method. These are study-specific author claims, not guarantees for current deployed products.
The published comparisons do not fully align: a ContextForge article reports a different LongMemEval number for Zep than Mem0’s later vendor comparison. That difference remains unresolved here; do not combine the figures as if they came from one matched test. Read the Mem0 comparison, the ContextForge comparison, and the Mem0 authors’ 2025 preprint with their respective setup and methodology descriptions.
For a decision you can rely on, run shortlisted options on the same representative records and questions. Track:
- Whether retrieved memories are relevant and complete for the task.
- How stale, conflicting, or corrected facts are handled.
- Latency and token or context use under the same application conditions.
- Integration effort and ongoing maintenance for your team.
- Privacy, governance, storage control, and the total price at your expected usage.
What to verify before committing
Product features, beta status, pricing, quotas, deployment choices, and integrations can change. The documentation and comparison materials cited here were current as of October 7, 2026; confirm details directly with the vendors before adopting a service. In particular, validate MCP and framework compatibility against your actual stack, and check data-handling and governance requirements before sending application context to a hosted service.
