The right AI marketing tool depends on the job you need done—not on how many AI features a product advertises. Small businesses should compare CRM platforms, email services, cross-app workflow automation, and customer-engagement bots separately, then check how each fits their customer data, existing software, and budget at real usage levels.
Start with the marketing job you need to solve
“AI marketing tools” covers several different kinds of software. A writing assistant, an email campaign service, a CRM, a workflow connector, and a customer-service bot may all use AI, but they do not replace one another. Identify the bottleneck first: creating campaigns, following up with leads, sending ecommerce emails, moving information between apps, or answering customer questions.

HubSpot’s roundup groups products across areas such as content creation, analytics and intelligence, marketing automation, and customer engagement. It is a vendor-authored overview, not an independent comparative test, so treat it as a starting point for a shortlist rather than proof that a particular product performs best: HubSpot’s AI marketing tools roundup.

| Category | Examples in the reviewed sources | Best fit to investigate | Key check before choosing |
|---|---|---|---|
| CRM-connected marketing and automation | HubSpot | A business that wants marketing activity connected to customer and lead records, rather than managed as a separate tool. | Check which features, email allowances, and automated actions are available on the specific product and tier you would use. HubSpot says its Smart CRM connects its marketing, sales, service, content, data, and revenue products; Breeze Assistant and Breeze Agents are optional, with availability dependent on product and edition. HubSpot Smart CRM |
| Email marketing and ecommerce campaigns | Shopify Messaging, ActiveCampaign, MailerLite, Klaviyo, Omnisend, Brevo, Constant Contact, HubSpot, Kit, and Mailchimp | A business that needs subscriber campaigns or ecommerce messages such as welcome, abandoned-cart, loyalty, or back-in-stock emails. | Compare list size, existing ecommerce and marketing tools, required features, budget, sending volume, and automation limits. These services are listed in Shopify’s May 30, 2026 guide; its pricing and free-tier details are a dated snapshot, not a guarantee of current terms. Shopify’s email marketing services guide |
| Cross-app workflow automation | Zapier | A business that needs information or actions to move between different apps, rather than another email editor or CRM. | Confirm that the apps and specific triggers and actions you rely on are supported, and check the plan limits. Zapier appears as a cross-platform workflow example in HubSpot’s vendor roundup; verify current capabilities with the provider. HubSpot’s AI marketing tools roundup |
| Customer engagement and bots | HubSpot Customer Agent, Drift by Salesloft, Botpress, LiveChatAI, and Braze | A business exploring automated customer conversations, support, or lead qualification. | These products differ in audience and complexity. Check how a person reviews bot outputs and takes over a conversation; the reviewed sources do not establish performance guarantees. HubSpot’s AI marketing tools roundup |
Decide whether a CRM-centered platform fits
A CRM-centered platform is worth evaluating when your marketing work depends on knowing who a customer is, what they have done, and what follow-up is due. HubSpot presents Smart CRM as a connected foundation for its product suite. That can reduce the need to treat marketing, sales, and service records as entirely separate workflows, but the value depends on the products and editions you actually use.
#1 Best Overall
Before choosing a CRM platform, map one real process from start to finish—for example, a new lead entering a form, being recorded, receiving a follow-up, and reaching a staff member when needed. Confirm which parts are included in your plan and which require a higher tier or optional product. HubSpot’s pricing page lists Free Tools, Starter, Professional, and Enterprise options and shows that email-send allowances and the number of automated actions vary by tier. Check the current packaging and limits directly before deciding: HubSpot pricing.
Choose email software around your list and existing stack
Email software is not interchangeable just because every provider can send campaigns. Shopify’s guide recommends weighing list size, existing tools, budget, and needed features. For ecommerce, the practical question is whether you can build and maintain the particular messages your business needs—such as welcome, abandoned-cart, loyalty, or back-in-stock emails—and whether the service fits the platform and customer data you already use.
Rank #2
Compare the cost at your expected subscriber count and sending volume, not only a starting or introductory price. Also check how automations are limited by plan and what happens as your list or activity grows. Shopify’s May 30, 2026 comparison names Shopify Messaging, ActiveCampaign, MailerLite, Klaviyo, Omnisend, Brevo, Constant Contact, HubSpot, Kit, and Mailchimp; its terms may have changed since that publication date. Use it to identify candidates, then verify the current offer with each provider: Shopify’s comparison of email marketing services.

A CRM automation usually operates within a defined marketing or customer-record workflow. A cross-app workflow tool is a different fit: it can connect steps that otherwise require someone to copy information or switch between services. Zapier is one example in HubSpot’s roundup, but a name on a shortlist does not establish that a particular integration or action is available on the plan you need.
- Write down the starting event, such as a new form submission or order.
- List the exact action that should follow and the app where it must happen.
- Check whether the connector supports both the event and action, including any fields or conditions your workflow needs.
- Review task, automation, or usage limits and decide how the process behaves if a step fails or needs human attention.
Set clear limits for bots and AI-generated content
A bot can be relevant when customers need quick answers or a business wants to qualify inquiries, but it should not be treated as a guaranteed replacement for staff. The HubSpot roundup includes HubSpot Customer Agent, Drift by Salesloft, Botpress, LiveChatAI, and Braze. The sources reviewed do not independently establish how well these products answer a particular business’s questions or convert its leads.
Before putting a bot in front of customers, test it against common questions and likely edge cases. Decide which topics it may answer, when it must stop and hand off to a person, and how staff can correct an inaccurate response. Apply the same principle to AI-written campaigns: have a person check claims, tone, links, and offer details before sending. These review steps are operational safeguards, not product performance promises.

Start with one primary category, then add another only if it solves a separate bottleneck. A small store may begin by comparing ecommerce email services; a service business with scattered lead follow-up may first examine a CRM-centered platform; a team duplicating work across apps may investigate workflow automation. A bot is most relevant when customer conversations are themselves the problem to solve.

- Automation depth: Are the required triggers, actions, channels, and conditions available on the plan under consideration?
- Cost at actual usage: What will the service cost at your real contact count, email volume, seats, or usage level, and where is the likely upgrade point?
- Integration effort: Does it connect to the tools and ecommerce platform you use, and how much setup or ongoing manual work remains?
- Human oversight: Who checks generated content, reviews automated outcomes, and takes over a bot conversation?
Do not treat roundup rankings, vendor descriptions, or the presence of an AI feature as evidence of a specific business result. The reviewed sources do not establish a general, independently verified performance gain for AI marketing tools. Compare products against your own workflow and verify current capabilities, prices, and plan limits with the provider.
