The Shanling EC ZERO AKM is a portable CD player for listeners who want their discs alongside a USB DAC, Bluetooth transmitter, headphone outputs and digital output. Its main distinction from the EC ZERO T is an AKM DAC and solid-state amplification in place of the T’s R2R DAC and tube/solid-state output. The trade-offs are a sizeable chassis and a premium launch price: Shanling announced the AKM at $319 in 2025, but that is a historical MSRP, not a promise of today’s price.
What the EC ZERO AKM does
It is more versatile than a disc-only player. Along with its top-loading CD mechanism, the EC ZERO AKM can serve as a USB DAC, transmit audio over Bluetooth, drive wired headphones, send an analog line-level signal, and provide SPDIF digital output. That breadth makes most sense if you own CDs but also want one device to handle other audio sources or connect to other equipment.

Connections and functions
- Headphones and analog line out: 3.5 mm and 4.4 mm outputs are specified for headphone and line-output use.
- USB DAC: It can accept digital audio over USB and work as a DAC rather than only playing discs. Linsoul lists support up to PCM 768 kHz/32-bit and DSD512; those are listing specifications, not independent test results. Linsoul’s product listing
- Bluetooth transmission: The device can transmit audio wirelessly. Linsoul lists Bluetooth 5.3 and aptX Adaptive, aptX and SBC codecs; codec availability depends on the receiving device and the listing should not be read as an independent performance test. Linsoul’s product listing
- SPDIF: A digital output lets it act as a transport for compatible external equipment.
- CD ripping: Linsoul specifies ripping discs to WAV on FAT32 USB storage. This is a format and file-system condition: do not assume an NTFS, exFAT or arbitrary drive will work. Linsoul’s product listing
Headfonics reports two USB-C sockets, one for data and one for charging, and a separate external-power mode. Check Shanling’s current manual for exact connection and operating-mode instructions before buying cables or power accessories. Headfonics review, January 14, 2026
How it differs from the EC ZERO T
The central difference is the conversion and output architecture, not the overall concept: Shanling says the AKM retains the T’s general design, I/O and accessory compatibility, while using a conventional AKM DAC and solid-state amplification instead of the T’s R2R conversion and tube/solid-state output. Shanling’s 2025 announcement set launch MSRPs at $319 for the AKM and $589 for the T; these historical figures do not establish current prices.

|---|---|---|

| EC ZERO T | R2R DAC; tube and solid-state output | $589 |
Choose between them based on the architecture and presentation you want, not on an assumption that one is objectively better. Headfonics described the AKM as cleaner, punchier and high-energy, and noted its low output impedance as a potential benefit with IEMs. Those are that reviewer’s listening impressions, not universal guarantees about what every listener or headphone will hear. Headfonics review, January 14, 2026
Size, battery and portability
“Portable” here means a self-contained player you can move, not a pocket-sized disc player. Headfonics gives dimensions of 158 × 150 × 28.6 mm and reports a 5300 mAh battery. Its size and top-loading mechanism make it better suited to a bag, desk or listening setup than to slipping into a pocket. Headfonics review, January 14, 2026

Runtime claims vary by source and mode. Shanling announced up to 10 hours of continuous playback, without that headline figure establishing the result for every output or use pattern. Linsoul lists up to 10 hours via analog outputs and 18.5 hours in Bluetooth mode; these are retailer specifications, not independent battery-test results. Actual runtime can depend on operating mode and use. Shanling announcement Linsoul product listing

Price and value
Shanling announced a $319 MSRP in 2025. Treat it as a launch reference, not the price available now: pricing and stock can change, so check a current seller listing for your region. At this level, the case for the EC ZERO AKM is its combination of disc playback, DAC, wireless transmission, ripping and multiple output options. If you only need to play CDs through headphones, much of what you pay for may go unused; a simpler player could be a better match.

Those are launch-era comparisons, not a current price or product-status check, so compare live specifications and listings before choosing between them. eCoustics product overview

Shanling’s support page lists an EC ZERO AKM manual, USB driver and firmware V1.0.3. The update notes say that version fixed a playback-end “pop,” adjusted USB input behavior and included other fixes and optimizations. The notes do not establish that every unit or firmware version has the issue. Shanling also says firmware updates require a Windows computer and cannot be downgraded. - Look elsewhere if you want a compact pocket player, only need basic CD playback, or do not expect to use its extra connections and functions.
