Short answer: choose Google Deep Review for technical claims, equations, references and internal logic; ChatGPT Deep Research for a cited evidence-gathering brief; Claude for collaborative revision in connected documents; ProWritingAid for whole-novel developmental diagnostics; and Grammarly for sentence-level proofreading, clarity, tone and usage. None should make publication, interpretation or voice decisions without a human editor.
These products are not interchangeable. A research paper and a 100,000-word fantasy novel need different kinds of review, so the best choice depends on the failure you are trying to catch rather than on a single overall ranking.

The five tools solve different manuscript problems
“AI manuscript reviewer” covers several distinct jobs. A technical reviewer tests whether an argument follows, an equation is coherent and a cited claim is supported. A research assistant finds external evidence and produces traceable citations. A developmental editor looks for plot, character, pacing, structure and continuity problems. A proofreader fixes grammar, punctuation, wording and tone.

There is no official cross-product benchmark establishing which system gives the best fiction review. The descriptions above are capability and workflow comparisons, not accuracy scores.
Google Deep Review: the specialist for technical verification
Google Research publicly released Deep Review on October 14, 2026. It evolved from Google’s Paper Assistant Tool (PAT), which Google says was used in opt-in pilots with more than 16,000 manuscripts across STOC 2026, ICML 2026, NeurIPS 2026 and ICLR 2027. That participation figure describes deployment, not comparative accuracy or superiority, and Google says pilot feedback was separate from official conference review.
Google describes Deep Review as an agentic system engineered to provide rigorous feedback and technical verification on complex documents. Its stated jobs include checking logical consistency and mathematical statements, suggesting improvements, grounding facts and comparing a document with existing work while leaving higher-level judgments to humans.
What you can submit
The public launch supports PDF and plain-text inputs. Multi-file input is described as forthcoming, so a literature review that depends on a folder of linked appendices may require a different workflow until that capability arrives. Each user receives two complimentary document reviews per week. Google says higher-volume workflows are available through a Gemini API key.
Privacy and retention
Google states that uploaded documents are not used to train, fine-tune or improve Google models. It also states that documents are stored for one year for display in the Deep Review user interface. Those are separate issues: a no-training promise does not mean immediate deletion. Authors handling confidential submissions should check organizational policy and retention requirements before uploading.

Can it review a novel?
Yes, it can inspect a novel for some consistency and research questions, but its public evidence is centered on technical review. It is a sensible second pass for a historical novel with dates, geography, legal procedures or scientific details to verify. It is not the strongest first choice for whether a protagonist’s emotional arc works, whether a scene earns its place or whether a reader will lose interest. Those are developmental and reader-response questions, not the technical verification problems Deep Review emphasizes.
ChatGPT Deep Research: the broadest cited research workflow
ChatGPT Deep Research is designed to investigate complex questions, compare evidence and produce reports with citations. Availability, source access, quotas and limits vary by plan, region, workspace settings and enabled capabilities, so the exact allowance shown in one account may not match another.

- Build a cited background brief before drafting or revising.
- Check whether a historical, scientific, medical, legal or market claim has credible support.
- Compare conflicting sources and identify where evidence is weak or uncertain.
- Create a source map that an editor can audit before facts are retained in the manuscript.
It is a general research workflow, not a dedicated developmental editor. It will not automatically produce a reliable plot, character, pacing or line-editing diagnosis merely because a manuscript is attached. Give it a manuscript-specific rubric: define the audience, list the claims to verify, distinguish canon from speculation, and require a source and confidence note for every consequential finding.
How to use its output safely
Treat a cited report as a research packet, not as an approval stamp. Open the cited sources, confirm that they actually support the sentence being revised, check publication dates and geography, and preserve uncertainty where the evidence is disputed. For a manuscript, ask for a table with the original claim, proposed correction, source, date, confidence and whether the change is essential. A citation can be relevant yet still fail to prove the precise wording you plan to publish.
Claude: strongest when research and revision happen in one document
Anthropic says Claude Research can search the web and connected tools, including Google Workspace. Claude’s Google Docs integration can propose text changes as cards that the user accepts or rejects one at a time. It can also read attached reference files subject to documented file and message limits.

Why the workflow is different
Claude is useful when an author wants an editorial conversation to remain attached to a living document. You can ask for a structural pass, discuss a concern, request a narrower rewrite and accept only selected changes rather than replacing the manuscript wholesale. The accept-or-reject cards make authorship decisions visible and reversible in Google Docs.
That collaboration does not make Claude a specialist diagnostic engine. The cited documentation does not establish a dedicated manuscript-analysis report comparable to ProWritingAid’s whole-book diagnostics. For a novel, provide a chapter outline, character list, timeline and a rubric covering continuity, stakes, point of view and voice. For nonfiction, provide the intended reader, evidence standard and claims that must not be softened or overstated.
ProWritingAid: the clearest whole-novel diagnostic option
ProWritingAid’s Manuscript Analysis is purpose-built for long-form fiction feedback. It analyzes up to 300,000 words and prioritizes issues by importance. Its reports cover plot, characters, setting, narrative themes, pacing, structure, timeline errors, dialogue and world-building, with locations in the text and suggestions for improvement.
Supported editing environments
The analysis is available in the Web Editor and through integrations including Microsoft Word, Google Docs and Scrivener. That makes it practical for an entire draft rather than only pasted excerpts. A 300,000-word capacity is a stated product limit, not a promise that every manuscript will receive equally useful feedback; very large or structurally experimental books still need human reading.
What its reports are good at
- Finding timeline contradictions and continuity breaks.
- Flagging uneven pacing or structural sections for closer inspection.
- Showing where characters, settings or world-building elements are introduced and reused.
- Turning a long draft into a prioritized revision list instead of a stream of isolated sentence edits.
ProWritingAid explicitly says Manuscript Analysis is not meant to replace a human developmental editor or beta reader. Use the report to decide what to investigate, then read the affected scenes in context. A flagged “plot issue” is a lead for judgment, not proof that the story is wrong.

Grammarly: a proofreading and clarity layer
Grammarly documents context-specific suggestions for grammar, spelling, usage, wordiness, style, punctuation, tone and plagiarism. It works in browsers, Windows and Mac applications, and its web-based Editor supports long-form documents.
That makes Grammarly most valuable after the structure is stable. It can reduce repetition, clarify an awkward sentence, catch a missing comma or identify a tone that does not fit the intended audience. It is not positioned in the cited product documentation as a whole-manuscript developmental reviewer for plot, character arcs, pacing or continuity.
Why proofreading should come late
Line polishing is wasted when a chapter will be cut or a paragraph will be rewritten after a structural pass. Accept style suggestions selectively: a shorter sentence is not automatically better, and a tone adjustment can erase a deliberate narrator voice. Run a final human proofread after the last substantive changes because automated corrections can introduce new meaning or inconsistency.

Which tool should you choose?
Choose Google Deep Review when…
- Your manuscript contains equations, formal proofs, technical methods or dense cross-references.
- You need logical-consistency and factual-grounding checks more than reader-response feedback.
- PDF or plain text is sufficient and two complimentary reviews per week cover your volume.
Choose ChatGPT Deep Research when…
- The central problem is finding and comparing external evidence.
- You need a cited briefing for historical, scientific, market or policy claims.
- You can audit every consequential citation and work within your plan’s regional and workspace limits.
Choose Claude when…
- You revise collaboratively in Google Docs or alongside connected reference files.
- You want to accept or reject proposed changes individually.

A reliable multi-tool manuscript workflow
Using one tool for every stage usually creates either shallow story feedback or over-edited prose. A staged workflow keeps each system in its proper role.
- Freeze a review copy. Export the manuscript, record its word count and version, and remove material you are not authorized to upload.
- Define the rubric. Write down audience, genre, factual-risk areas, required sources, continuity rules and questions the reviewer must not answer by inventing information.
- Run the structural pass. For fiction, use ProWritingAid Manuscript Analysis or a carefully prompted Claude review. For technical work, use Deep Review to identify logic, mathematics and cross-reference risks.
- Build the evidence packet. Use ChatGPT Deep Research for external claims, then open and verify the cited sources. Ask Claude to synthesize connected reference files when the working document is in Google Docs.
- Make human revision decisions. Accept, reject or rewrite findings in context. Preserve deliberate ambiguity, dialect, unusual structure and narrator voice when they serve the work.
- Proofread last. Run Grammarly after substantive changes, inspect every accepted suggestion and perform a final human read against the current manuscript.
- Keep an audit trail. Save the reviewed version, source list, accepted changes and unresolved questions so an editor can reproduce why a claim or passage changed.

Do not infer that one vendor’s privacy statement applies to another product or workspace. Review current terms, administrator settings, connected-drive permissions and deletion controls before uploading an unpublished book, a client manuscript or a confidential submission.
Common failure modes and fixes
Asking for “overall feedback”
A broad prompt produces broad, low-priority observations. Supply a rubric, chapter or section boundaries, audience and a required output format. Ask the system to label evidence, uncertainty and the exact passage that triggered each finding.
Accepting every suggested rewrite
Automated prose can flatten voice, remove purposeful repetition or change legal and technical meaning. Treat each rewrite as an option; compare it with the original and reject changes that do not serve the manuscript.
Confusing a citation with verification
A cited page may be outdated, geographically irrelevant or weaker than the wording it is attached to. Open the source, check the date and scope, and rewrite the claim to match what the source actually establishes.
Uploading an entire book without a plan
Large context windows and word caps do not guarantee coherent analysis. Establish a stable manuscript version, provide an outline and glossary, and review prioritized findings in batches. For specialist tools, confirm the stated capacity before dividing or combining files.
Treating a pilot count as a quality score
Google’s more than 16,000 opted-in PAT manuscripts show that the predecessor was used in conference pilots. They do not show that Deep Review is more accurate than ChatGPT, Claude, ProWritingAid or Grammarly.
What human editors still decide
Software can surface contradictions, suggest evidence and identify patterns. A human must decide whether a contradiction is intentional, whether a source is authoritative enough, whether a character choice is dramatically earned, whether a legal qualification changes the conclusion and whether a stylistic irregularity is part of the author’s voice. Publication, interpretation and final acceptance remain editorial decisions.
