It cannot, by itself, establish that a person is dangerous or that a door should be unlocked, an entry denied, or a response dispatched. For decisions that affect safety, access, or emergency response, a responsible human should retain authority and have the information, time, and power to challenge the system.
Where AI fits in physical security
AI is most defensible as a tool that helps people manage information: flagging activity for review, prioritizing events, or supporting analysis across surveillance systems. The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) identified monitoring and enhancing digital and physical surveillance among federal-sector AI use cases. That finding documents proposed or identified uses; it does not show that every deployment is accurate, safe, or effective.

Think of an AI output as a lead, not a verdict. A system may detect or rank an event. Deciding that someone is a threat, denying that person access, or initiating an intervention is a separate judgment with consequences. Keeping those stages distinct makes it easier to assign responsibility and examine where an error occurred.

Can AI replace security guards?
The evidence here supports AI as assistance for monitoring and investigation, not as a demonstrated replacement for guards or other security staff. An alert still needs interpretation: an operator may need to check surrounding footage, consult access logs, contact staff on site, or decide whether the situation warrants escalation. Those tasks depend on context and on someone being accountable for the response.
Automation may reduce the burden of reviewing routine information, but that does not establish that a site can safely remove human coverage. A buyer should ask what tasks the product performs, which tasks remain with staff, and what happens when an alert is wrong, ambiguous, delayed, or unavailable. If the answer to a consequential decision is simply “the model decided,” responsibility has not been adequately addressed.

When should a person make the call?
Human authority matters most when a decision can materially affect a person’s safety, access, rights, or treatment: for example, labeling someone suspicious, denying entry, escalating force, or triggering an emergency response. NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework says human roles and oversight responsibilities should be clearly defined. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) similarly recommends identifying which AI systems in critical infrastructure need human supervision and human control of decisions where malfunctions or unintended consequences could affect safety or operations.
This is not a claim that every AI feature needs a person watching it continuously. NIST notes that some functions, such as improving video compression, may not require human oversight. Oversight should be proportionate to the task and its potential impact; consequential security judgments call for stronger, clearly assigned human control.

- Enhanced motion detection — Be alerted to motion faster from your smartphone with dual-zone, enhanced motion detection.
- Person detection — Get alerts when a person is detected with embedded computer vision (CV) as part of an optional Blink Subscription Plan (sold separately).
A nominal approval step is not meaningful oversight. The person responsible needs enough training and context to assess an output, adequate time to do so, authority to reject it, and a practical way to pause or override the system. NIST also cautions that AI can amplify human bias in some perceptual judgment tasks; carefully organized human-AI teams may complement one another, but the arrangement itself does not guarantee a fair or correct outcome.
Access control: identity is not permission
Access decisions illustrate why an AI result should not be confused with authorization. NIST FIPS 201-3 describes a federal Personal Identity Verification system for employees and contractors. It distinguishes authentication—checking a claimed identity—from deciding whether that person is authorized to enter a particular area. A successful identity check does not itself answer the authorization question.

FIPS 201-3 is a federal credential standard, not a universal requirement for commercial buildings. NIST also cautions that a product’s conformance does not guarantee the security of the complete system. Operators should assess the whole access-control workflow, including the rules that grant access, the equipment and integrations that enforce them, and how exceptions are handled.

What to establish before deployment
Before relying on AI in a physical-security workflow, document the intended use and assess the consequences of both false alarms and missed events. GAO’s review is a reminder that identifying a use case is not the same as completing a risk assessment: among the 17 federal sector and subsector assessments it reviewed, none fully addressed all six activities GAO identified as foundations for effective AI risk assessment, and most did not fully identify the likelihood of risks.

- Video Doorbell is our second-generation smart security doorbell with up to two years of battery life, an expanded field of view, and improved security features for more peace of mind, no matter where you are.
- Last longer with two-year battery life — Experience up to two years of smart security coverage on both devices with included AA Energizer lithium batteries and a Blink Sync Module (included with Outdoor 4).
- See and speak from the Blink app — Experience head-to-toe HD viewing from Video Doorbell and 1080p HD live view from Outdoor 4 as well as infrared night vision and crisp two-way audio.

- Define the decision boundary. Specify what the system may detect, rank, or recommend and which decisions require an authorized person.
- Ask for deployment-specific evidence. Request test conditions, error rates, and results for the site’s actual cameras, lighting, traffic patterns, and operating conditions. Ask how the vendor measures false positives and missed events, and what each type of error could mean at your site.
- Make oversight operational. Name the person or role responsible for review and response. Set out how that person can challenge an alert, override an action, pause the system, or escalate an uncertain case.
- Check dependencies and secondary risks. Review privacy and bias controls, cybersecurity, vendor and data dependencies, system integrations, and who can access or change settings.
- Plan for failure and change. Establish monitoring, incident handling, rollback, and a fallback process for outages, unreliable outputs, or changes in conditions. Test those procedures rather than relying on written assurances alone.
These checks synthesize risk-management and human-AI guidance; they are practical questions for operators, not a single regulator’s prescribed checklist.
When AI connects to operational technology
Some physical-security systems interface with building controls or other operational technology (OT); many surveillance deployments do not. Where an AI system is connected to OT, joint CISA and partner guidance published December 3, 2025, organizes secure integration around four principles: understand AI and its risks; assess whether and how it fits the OT use case; establish governance and assurance; and embed safety and security measures. Do not treat every camera or monitoring system as OT—the connection depends on the deployment.
How to evaluate an AI security claim
Ask vendors and operators for concrete answers before treating an AI feature as a security improvement:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- What precise task does the system perform, and what decisions does it not make?
- What evidence shows how it performs under conditions like this site’s, including the consequences of false alarms and missed events?
- What information does an operator receive with an alert, and how can they challenge or override the output?
- Who is accountable for review, escalation, and system changes?
- What happens during a network outage, integration failure, or system malfunction?
- How are privacy, bias, cybersecurity, vendor dependencies, and data access managed?
NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework is voluntary. NIST’s framework page says AI RMF 1.0 is being revised and that a critical-infrastructure profile concept note was released April 7, 2026; that concept note is not a finalized requirement. Treat the framework as a risk-management resource, not proof that a product is compliant or safe. NIST AI Risk Management Framework.
For the evidence behind federal AI use cases and risk-assessment gaps, see the GAO report. Its report page showed the recommendation to improve DHS guidance as open as of July 2026, with an estimated completion date of March 31, 2027; that status can change. For human-AI roles and oversight, consult NIST AI RMF 1.0, Appendix C. DHS’s critical-infrastructure guidance is available as a PDF; the joint OT principles are available as a PDF. For the federal identity-credential context, see NIST FIPS 201-3.
