Cybersecurity practitioners have voiced the same concern, and UK survey findings show that AI use can coexist with gaps in AI-specific safeguards and foundational controls. That evidence supports the concern in general; it does not prove that a particular vendor is exaggerating or that a specific employer has neglected security.
Why the mismatch feels real
In a discussion thread about AI vendor hype, commenters described vendors presenting themselves as AI leaders, worries about vendor security, and reluctance to send sensitive documents to third-party AI services. One replied, “You’re definitely not the only one dealing with this nonsense.” Another said their workplace had no SecOps ticketing system but kept hearing “AI AI AI.” Those are personal comments, not verified case studies or evidence about employers generally. Still, the broader tension is supported by survey evidence: organizations can adopt or consider AI without having specific processes to manage its cybersecurity risks, while some ordinary controls remain absent. These surveys describe reported practices, not independently audited security at each organization. They also cannot establish that AI projects caused gaps in routine security.

What the surveys say—and what they don’t
UK businesses and charities report uneven baseline controls
The UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology’s Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2025/2026 defines cyber hygiene as organizational practices covering risk management, technical controls and cyber governance. Among UK businesses, reported adoption included updated malware protection at 81%, secure cloud backups at 74%, password policies at 74%, network firewalls at 74%, restricted administrator rights at 73% and two-factor authentication at 47%. For UK charities, the corresponding figures were 63%, 57%, 56%, 45%, 65% and 38%. These figures show reported coverage, not whether controls were effective or consistently enforced. See the survey.

- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
The same survey found that among businesses and charities using, adopting or considering AI, 24% of businesses and 27% of charities reported practices or processes to manage AI-related cybersecurity risks. Among businesses in that group, 38% planned to introduce such processes in the next 12 months, while 31% reported no plans. These are UK findings and should not be read as global estimates.
General governance is not the same as AI-specific governance
A separate UK government-commissioned survey found that among businesses currently using AI technologies, 47% had no specific AI cybersecurity practices and another 13% were unsure. Yet 90% of all businesses reported at least one broader governance or risk-management arrangement; 72% had a formal cybersecurity policy, 67% had a business continuity plan covering cybersecurity and 64% had a written list of critical assets. A general policy or continuity plan is useful, but by itself it does not establish how an organization controls AI systems, data or vendors. See the DSIT-commissioned survey.

A worldwide professional poll points to governance and measurement gaps
ISACA says more than 3,400 digital trust professionals worldwide contributed to its 2026 AI Pulse Poll. Its published summary reports that 38% of organizations have comprehensive AI policies and that 11% of practitioners strongly agree their organizations give sufficient attention to AI ethics. The poll also highlights concerns around training, risk management, tested response plans and measurable return on investment. These are poll findings reported by ISACA, not audited measures of every organization. Read ISACA’s poll summary.

How to bring the conversation back to evidence
Instead of arguing over whether a vendor is “really AI,” ask what the proposed system will do, what information it will touch and how the organization will manage it. The following checks translate common readiness concerns into questions a team can answer before expanding use:
- Foundational controls: Are high-risk systems patched? Is two-factor authentication enabled? Are administrator rights restricted? Are backups protected and tested?
- AI-specific ownership: Who approves use cases, reviews cybersecurity risks and decides what data is permitted? Is there a documented process rather than an informal assumption that existing policy covers it?
- Data handling: Where can prompts, uploaded files and outputs go? Can a third party retain or use them, and who is allowed to submit sensitive information?
- Incident response: If the system exposes data, produces harmful output or becomes unavailable, who receives the report and what response path is tested?
- Measurable outcomes: What result is the project meant to improve, how will it be measured and what evidence would justify continuing it?
This is a practical evaluation frame drawn from the survey themes, not a ranking of vendors or a claim that any particular product has been tested.

The fair conclusion
The frustration is not isolated, and survey findings make the broader mismatch plausible: AI adoption can move ahead while AI-specific governance and some basic controls remain incomplete. But the available evidence cannot determine whether a named vendor’s claims are hype, whether a particular workplace is secure, or whether AI spending displaced routine security work. The productive challenge is to ask for concrete evidence of control coverage, responsible data handling, response readiness and measurable benefit—alongside the promised AI capability.
