Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf headphones crackle on Xbox One, first check the 3.5 mm connection and compare the headset with another device or another compatible headset. Those tests help tell whether the noise follows the headset, stays with the controller, or may come from Xbox audio settings. The settings and firmware checks below are troubleshooting suggestions—not a guaranteed fix for this specific symptom.
Start by identifying how the headset is connected
These steps address headphones plugged into an Xbox One controller. The Xbox Stereo Headset is listed as compatible with Xbox One and connects to a compatible Xbox Wireless Controller through its 3.5 mm jack (Xbox Stereo Headset compatibility). If you are using a headset adapter, note that in your diagnosis; if the controller is connected to a Windows PC, use the separate PC section below rather than console instructions.

Check the plug, cable, and headset first
- Turn the volume down before disconnecting anything.
- Unplug the headset and examine the 3.5 mm plug and cable for visible damage.
- Insert the plug fully into the controller jack. A loose connection is a basic possibility to rule out before assuming an electronic fault.
- Try the headset on another device with a compatible headphone connection. If it crackles there too, the headset or cable becomes the leading suspect.
A headset that works on another device does not prove the controller is faulty, but it shifts attention toward the controller connection or Xbox configuration.
Use a cross-test to separate headset and controller faults
If you can borrow a known-working compatible headset, test it on the same controller. Microsoft Community guidance recommends trying another headset to help distinguish a headset problem from a controller-jack or wiring issue; this is community advice, not an official repair guarantee (Microsoft Community discussion).

- The original headset crackles on another device: suspect its cable or headset hardware.
- The original headset works elsewhere, but another headset works on the controller: the original headset may be incompatible, intermittent, or faulty.
- Two headsets crackle on the same controller: suspect the controller jack or Xbox audio configuration; the cross-test alone cannot identify which one.
Check Xbox audio settings and controller firmware
Once the physical connection and cross-tests are done, check the console’s headset audio format, party-chat output, and whether controller firmware has an update. A Microsoft Community answer suggests trying Stereo uncompressed and setting party-chat output to the headset, as well as checking controller firmware. These are low-cost checks, not established universal fixes for static; Microsoft’s official Xbox product page confirms the 3.5 mm connection, but does not guarantee that these settings resolve crackling.
If the controller is connected to a Windows PC
For a controller-and-headset setup being used with a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, Microsoft lists audio enhancements, audio format, and driver issues as possible causes of distorted or crackling audio. Its Windows guidance recommends turning enhancements off, trying a different default audio format, and updating or reinstalling the audio driver. The general Windows sound troubleshooting page also covers connection and device checks (Fix distorted or crackling audio in Windows; Fix sound or audio problems in Windows). These are PC steps, not Xbox One menu instructions. A Microsoft Q&A discussion about a PC/controller audio issue does not establish that spatial audio causes static from a headset plugged into an Xbox One console (Microsoft Q&A discussion).

Decide what to replace or report
Replace the headset only if the tests point to a headset fault. The Xbox Stereo Headset is one compatible option for Xbox One and connects through the controller’s 3.5 mm jack, but a replacement headset will not fix a damaged controller jack or another console-side cause. Confirm compatibility for the specific headset and controller before buying.

If the noise persists, contact Xbox Support with the exact headset and controller models, whether the controller is charging or wired, which cross-tests reproduced the noise, and whether it affects game audio, party chat, or both. The available official Xbox material does not provide a static-specific repair procedure, so avoid assuming a reset or repair step without model-specific guidance.
