AI Hiring Assessments vs. Coding Tests: What Candidates Should Expect

An AI hiring assessment is the broad category; a coding test is one specific type of work-sample assessment. An AI-enabled process may score resumes, screen qualifications, analyze an online video interview, administer games or quizzes, or estimate personality-related traits. A coding test usually gives you programming problems in an online editor and evaluates code, debugging, and problem-solving against rules set by the employer. The two can appear in the same hiring process, and either may be combined with human review.

Your priorities are to identify what competency is being measured, confirm the rules before you begin, prepare for the actual job duties, and request accessibility support early if the platform creates a barrier. There is no universal rule about using ChatGPT or another outside AI tool during an assessment: the employer’s written instructions control.

AI assessment and coding test: the essential difference

Employment assessments are structured ways to gather information about people for an employment decision. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services describes an assessment as a “valid, reliable, and systematic approach to gathering information about individuals.” Written tests, work samples, and structured interviews all fit that definition.

AI hiring assessment describes a broad use of algorithms or artificial intelligence anywhere in that evaluation. Depending on the employer and role, it can include:

Coding test describes a narrower work sample. You are asked to write, complete, debug, or explain code, usually in an online editor, under submission and sometimes time constraints. It is intended to measure programming knowledge and problem solving, although the exact language, tools, test cases, proctoring, and scoring are employer-specific. A coding platform may use automated checks without the assessment being an AI hiring assessment in the broader sense.

The practical distinction is the construct being measured. An AI-enabled screen might look for qualifications, communication signals, or behavioral patterns across an application. A coding test should be tied to programming duties such as implementing an algorithm, handling data, diagnosing a defect, or explaining a design choice.

How the two formats compare

Question AI-enabled hiring assessment Coding test
What is measured? Potentially qualifications, communication, behavior, personality-style signals, or broad skills, depending on the tool. Programming knowledge, debugging, code quality, and problem solving through a work sample.
How close is it to the job? Varies widely; a resume screen may be indirect, while a role-specific simulation can resemble daily work. Closer when it uses the job’s language, framework, data, and realistic constraints; less informative when it tests unrelated puzzles.
Typical candidate experience Resume submission, video or questionnaire, game, quiz, or computer-based test; some steps may be automated. Online editor with one or more programming tasks, instructions, test cases, and a submission window.
Scoring transparency Ask what data and signals are used, how AI contributes, and whether a person reviews the result. Ask how visible tests, hidden tests, performance limits, style, explanations, and partial credit affect the score.
Accessibility questions Whether video, voice, game, or proctoring features work with assistive technology and support accommodations. Whether the editor, keyboard navigation, time limits, proctoring, and permitted tools work with your access needs.
Human review and recourse Ask whether an anomalous result, technical failure, or accommodation issue can be reviewed by a person. Ask whether a reviewer can inspect your approach, clarify a platform error, or reconsider a score that does not reflect the submitted work.
Candidate burden May involve several stages, repeated questionnaires, video, or monitoring. Usually concentrated in one session or take-home assignment, with the employer’s own completion window and rules.

Neither label tells you whether a process is fair or useful. The relevant questions are whether the assessment is job-related, administered consistently, accessible, explained clearly, and reviewed appropriately.

What to expect from an AI-enabled hiring assessment

1. An invitation and a defined target

A legitimate process should identify the role and give you enough information to understand the competency or job duty being assessed. Read the job description beside the invitation. If the role is for backend development, for example, you should be able to connect the assessment to programming, debugging, system reasoning, or another stated duty—not an unexplained trait with no relationship to the work.

Look for the practical details before opening the test:

2. A format that may not look like a test

AI-enabled hiring can appear as a resume-ranking step, a qualification questionnaire, an online video interview, a game, a quiz, or a personality-style measure. Some tools generate a score; others sort applicants into a review queue. A human may review the result later, or the score may be one hurdle in a multi-stage process.

Do not infer the purpose from the interface alone. A game may be intended to measure a narrow skill, while a video system may analyze answers, timing, or other signals. Ask the employer which competencies matter and what part, if any, is automated.

3. A decision step after submission

Assessment choice depends on the position, the competencies sought, the number of applicants, and the employer’s available resources. The result may be combined with interviews, portfolio evidence, references, or another work sample. A low score can therefore be a screen rather than a complete judgment of your ability, but you should not assume that a later human review will occur unless the employer says so.

What happens in an online coding test

Before the timer starts

Most coding assessments begin with instructions describing the language or languages, editor, test format, submission process, and any restrictions. Read the examples and constraints before writing code. Confirm whether you can run sample tests, submit more than once, ask questions, or use documentation. If the instructions are silent about an external tool, pause and ask the employer rather than guessing.

During the task

You may receive a function signature, input and output specification, sample cases, and limits on time or memory. Hidden tests usually check cases beyond the examples. A strong approach is to:

  1. Restate the input, output, and constraints in your own notes.
  2. Choose an algorithm that fits the stated limits before optimizing prematurely.
  3. Implement a simple correct path, keeping the code readable.
  4. Run the provided examples, then add edge cases such as empty input, one item, duplicates, maximum values, invalid boundaries, and already-sorted or reverse-ordered data when those cases fit the specification.
  5. Check error handling, integer overflow, mutation of inputs, and off-by-one boundaries.
  6. Use the remaining time to inspect complexity and explain trade-offs.

The employer may evaluate more than whether one example runs. Depending on the test, hidden cases, execution time, memory use, compilation, code quality, and an explanation can all matter. Because those rules differ, treat the platform’s instructions as authoritative.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After submission

Save the submission confirmation if the platform provides one. Keep a copy of your final code and any explanation that the rules allow you to retain. If the platform crashes, loses a connection, changes the prompt, or submits an incomplete file, capture screenshots and contact the named support address promptly. State what happened and the time, and ask whether the employer can reopen or review the attempt.

Can you use ChatGPT during a coding assessment?

There is no universal rule in the cited guidance that permits or bans ChatGPT. The employer’s written policy governs. Some assessments may allow documentation or an assistant; others may prohibit all outside help, require original work, or use monitoring intended to detect assistance. Using an unapproved tool can invalidate an otherwise correct submission.

Use this decision process:

  1. Read every rule. Check the invitation, platform instructions, candidate agreement, and any proctoring notice for language about AI tools, search, documentation, collaboration, or copying code.
  2. Ask before starting if anything is unclear. Write to the recruiter or assessment contact and ask specifically whether ChatGPT or another generative AI tool is allowed, for which tasks, and whether you must disclose its use.
  3. Follow the narrowest interpretation until you receive an answer. Do not paste a prompt, proprietary code, personal data, or assessment content into an external service while waiting.
  4. If AI is allowed, clarify how your own reasoning is evaluated. You may still need to explain, test, modify, and defend the result. Keep a record of what assistance was used if disclosure is required.
  5. If AI is prohibited, work unaided. Treat the restriction like any other exam rule, even if the platform itself includes automated hints.

An employer that uses AI in its own hiring process should be able to explain what is permitted for candidates and how the candidate’s own reasoning will be judged. If the answer is vague, request written clarification before you begin.

How to prepare for a coding test

Match preparation to the job

Start with the language, framework, database, cloud service, or tooling named in the job description. Practice in an environment similar to the assessment’s editor, including compiling, running tests, reading standard input, and submitting a final answer. Do not spend all your time on generic puzzle patterns if the job emphasizes debugging, API work, data modeling, or maintaining an existing codebase.

Practice the skills that show up in a work sample

  • Translate a written requirement into a precise function or interface.
  • Choose data structures and algorithms that fit constraints.
  • Trace a failing program and isolate the defect.
  • Write tests for normal, boundary, and adversarial cases.
  • Explain time and space trade-offs in plain language.
  • Read unfamiliar code without rewriting everything.

Use a repeatable session plan

  1. Spend the first minutes mapping requirements, constraints, and unknowns.
  2. Write a short plan or pseudocode before committing to an implementation.
  3. Get a correct baseline running, then improve it only where the constraints require.
  4. Test incrementally instead of waiting until the end.
  5. Reserve time to reread the prompt and inspect edge cases.
  6. Prepare a concise explanation of assumptions, complexity, and compromises.

Rehearse the non-code requirements

Confirm how the platform handles copy and paste, multiple files, package installation, browser tabs, and reconnects. Practice with the keyboard navigation and screen magnification or reader settings you plan to use. If proctoring or a camera is required, test the permitted setup in advance rather than discovering an access barrier during the timed session.

How to prepare for a broader AI assessment

Identify the competency before practicing

Ask the employer what the assessment measures: a specific technical skill, communication, judgment, teamwork, or another job-related competency. Ask what data or signals are used, whether an algorithm scores them, and whether a person reviews the result. The answers determine how to prepare; practicing coding problems will not prepare you for a structured video response, and memorizing personality-test answers does not demonstrate a job duty.

Prepare evidence, not a persona

For structured questions, review the role’s actual responsibilities and prepare concise examples of work you have done, the decision you made, and the result. Keep answers truthful and consistent with your application. If a video or game measures timing, movement, voice, or another feature unrelated to the job, ask why that signal is necessary and whether an alternative format is available.

Confirm logistics and data handling

  • Ask how long responses are retained and who can access them.
  • Ask whether AI-generated scores are validated against job performance.
  • Ask how you will be notified when AI is used.
  • Ask how to request a human review or challenge a technical or scoring error.
  • Keep the invitation, instructions, and any written answers from the employer.

Accessibility, accommodations, and extra time

Testing technologies must evaluate job skills, not disabilities. A screen-reader-incompatible interview tool, a game that requires precise mouse movement, a voice analysis that disadvantages a speech impairment, or a rigid timer that conflicts with an approved accommodation can prevent an otherwise qualified candidate from demonstrating the required skill.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Contact the employer promptly—ideally before opening a timed assessment—and describe the access barrier and the adjustment you need. You generally do not need to volunteer a diagnosis in an initial request unless the employer’s accommodation process requires documentation. Examples of possible adjustments include an accessible interface, keyboard-compatible controls, captions, an alternative response format, additional time, breaks, or a modified process. The appropriate option depends on the job and the barrier. Employers may decline an adjustment only when it would create undue hardship, and they should still consider an effective alternative.

A practical request can be brief:

I am scheduled to complete the assessment by [date]. The current interface is not compatible with my screen reader, so I cannot access the questions reliably. Please provide an accessible version or another way to demonstrate the same job-related skills. If additional time or a different response format is needed, please let me know the process.

Keep the request, the employer’s response, and any confirmation of a revised deadline. If an accommodation is promised but not available when the test opens, stop rather than submitting a compromised attempt; document the problem and contact the support person.

How to judge whether an AI hiring test is fair

Job relationship and validity

The EEOC states that “the test or selection procedure must be job-related and its results appropriate for the employer’s purpose.” Matthew Scherer of the EEOC explained that, when a test has a disparate impact, the employer must link it to the duties of the specific position; in his words, a valid hiring test “must measure the person for the job and not the person in the abstract.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask which duty or competency each part measures and how the employer validated that connection. A vendor’s technical documentation may help, but responsibility for using the procedure appropriately remains with the employer. An assessment that screens out a protected group may require the employer to consider a less-discriminatory alternative.

Transparency and notice

Useful signals include a clear explanation of the assessment’s purpose, notice when AI is used, information about the data or signals considered, and an explanation of how results affect the next step. You may not receive the complete model or a detailed score, but you should be able to learn what you are being asked to demonstrate and who makes the decision.

Validation, monitoring, and human control

OECD’s 2025 synthesis of Canadian public-sector guidance identifies practical safeguards: explainability and transparency, validation of AI-generated results, regular bias audits, candidate notification, and a recourse mechanism. It also says hiring decisions should remain human-led. Ask whether a person reviews borderline or unusual outcomes, technical failures, and accommodation issues, and how you can request that review.

Accessibility and disparate impact

Compare the assessment’s demands with the actual job. If a tool evaluates speech, facial movement, reaction speed, or a particular interface behavior, ask why that feature is necessary and whether it could screen out people with disabilities or other protected characteristics. A job-related alternative may measure the same competency without the unrelated barrier.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Questions to send before you start

  • Which job duties and competencies does this assessment measure?
  • What parts are automated, and what parts are reviewed by a person?
  • What data or signals are used to generate a score?
  • How does the result affect the hiring decision, and is there a human review or appeal path?
  • What is the time limit, and can the session be paused or resumed?
  • Which languages, libraries, references, and external tools are allowed?
  • Is ChatGPT or another generative AI tool allowed, prohibited, or allowed only with disclosure?
  • What browser, camera, microphone, monitoring, or identity checks are required?
  • How can I request an accommodation or report a platform failure?
  • How long are recordings, code, and assessment results retained, and who can access them?

A candidate checklist

  1. Read the job description and mark the skills the test should measure.
  2. Save the invitation, instructions, deadline, and contact details.
  3. Confirm the duration, permitted references, AI-tool policy, monitoring, and submission rules.
  4. Ask for clarification in writing when a rule or scoring method is unclear.
  5. Request an accommodation early and describe the access barrier.
  6. Test your browser, editor, keyboard, microphone, camera, and network under the stated requirements.
  7. For coding tasks, practice the named language and tools, test edge cases, and prepare to explain trade-offs.
  8. For broader AI assessments, ask what competency is measured and prepare job-specific examples.
  9. Save submission confirmations and document crashes, changed prompts, or inaccessible controls.
  10. After an unexpected result or technical problem, request a human review and provide the evidence you kept.

Bottom line

Think of AI hiring assessment as an umbrella and coding test as a focused work sample beneath it. A credible process connects every scored signal to the job, explains the rules, accommodates candidates, validates automated results, and leaves a person responsible for the decision. Your best preparation is therefore twofold: practice the actual work the role requires, and ask precise questions about AI use, outside assistance, accessibility, scoring, and recourse before you begin.
