Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAfter an AI tool flags a bug, developers confirm what the alert means, prioritize the risk, review a proposed fix, and test it before merging. The alert is a lead to investigate—not proof of a defect—and an AI-generated patch is a proposal, not proof that the software is fixed.
First, inspect what the AI found
Start with the affected file and code, the alert’s explanation and severity, the branch, and the path that leads to the reported behavior. In GitHub pull requests, code-scanning findings can appear as annotations; some CodeQL alerts let maintainers inspect a path from an untrusted data source to the code that uses it. That context helps determine whether the report describes a real problem and what could be affected. GitHub’s guide to code-scanning alerts explains that workflow.

Not every finding is a security vulnerability. Google’s open-source guidance distinguishes ordinary bugs, feature requests, and confirmed vulnerabilities; only a confirmed vulnerability belongs in a vulnerability response process. The guide is written for open-source maintainers, so its advice may not fit every project. Google’s open-source vulnerability guide

When practical, reproduce the issue, inspect the relevant code and tests, and decide whether the alert is valid. If it is a security finding, identify the affected software and assess the risk in the project’s context. NIST recommends defining a triage process, assigning remediation through issue tracking, and prioritizing vulnerabilities relative to other work. Its guidance does not prescribe one severity formula for every team. NIST Secure Software Development Framework

Some code-scanning configurations can fail a pull request when findings meet configured severity thresholds. Those thresholds are organizational settings, not a universal measure of whether a change is safe to merge. GitHub’s code-scanning alert documentation
Inspect the proposed fix as a suggestion
An AI tool might explain an alert, suggest a code change, or—in some workflows—create a draft pull request. For example, GitHub says Copilot Autofix proposes potential fixes for supported CodeQL alerts using alert information and code context. It supports only a subset of alerts and queries, so its availability is not evidence that every bug can be fixed automatically. GitHub’s guide to resolving code-scanning alerts
Review the patch as you would any other code change. Check that it addresses the underlying cause, preserves intended behavior, follows project conventions, and does not introduce a new vulnerability or dependency risk. NIST’s DevSecOps reference model calls for AI-generated outputs to go through established peer review, security validation, automated testing, and approval workflows. That review matters because automated program repair can miss edge cases, project-specific requirements, and interactions with other parts of a codebase. A NIST-hosted review discusses these limits; it is research on repair approaches, not a current comparison of commercial tools. NIST’s review of automated program repair

Test the behavior, revise the patch, and rerun checks
Run the tests and analysis that cover the affected behavior: as appropriate, unit, integration, regression, and security checks. Add or update a regression test when it will help prevent the bug from returning. GitHub advises developers to test and modify a suggested fix as needed; committing a change to a pull request triggers another run of checks. If the changes fix the issue, GitHub says the alert closes. A green check is useful evidence, but it does not replace tests of the intended product behavior. GitHub’s guide to resolving code-scanning alerts
For example, if a patch adds input validation, test both the problematic input and valid neighboring cases. A check for only the reported case can leave a nearby failure undiscovered; the NIST-hosted repair review discusses how a repair may handle one parameter case while missing another. Merge, deploy, and watch for problems
Once the patch passes the team’s review and required checks, it proceeds through the normal merge and release process. NIST’s notional DevSecOps model includes validating installation, monitoring deployment, and managing rollback if deployment fails. Security staff also monitor for vulnerabilities or misconfiguration. A successful code check alone does not establish that a change is healthy in production. Record the cause and improve prevention
Track the root cause and look for patterns across findings. NIST recommends recording vulnerability root causes and using that understanding to improve future training and testing. This turns an individual fix into a chance to reduce the likelihood of similar defects. NIST Secure Software Development Framework
