A benchmark score is an experiment record, not a lone leaderboard number. A reproducible report lets another team recover the same data revision, run the same system and commands, inspect every random draw, and recompute the published tables. It must also show uncertainty and validity limits: a perfectly rerunnable pipeline can still measure the wrong capability or a biased sample.
The one-page reproducibility checklist
Use this checklist before publishing a score or comparison. Each item should be filled with concrete values, not a statement that the detail was “standard.”

- Define the measurement target. Name the task, population, hypotheses, inclusion and exclusion rules, benchmark and version, metric direction (whether higher or lower is better), aggregation, and the decision the metric is meant to inform.
- Pin the data. Record the dataset revision or content hash, license, provenance, preprocessing, filtering, deduplication, train/validation/test split, and contamination or leakage checks. If redistribution is prohibited, give the access procedure and preserve an allowed snapshot or checksum.
- Specify the system under test. Identify the model family, exact checkpoint or API date, tokenizer, prompt or template, decoding settings, tools, stopping rules, and final hyperparameters. For a hosted API, record the endpoint and retrieval date.
- Record the execution environment. Include operating system, CPU and GPU models, memory, accelerator count, driver and runtime, framework and dependency versions, lockfiles or container digest, and repository commit. Confirm that the checkout is clean.
- Make the protocol copyable. Publish exact commands, configuration files, environment setup, evaluation-harness commit, warm-up and repeat rules, batch size, timeouts, and expected output files. A clean checkout should be enough to regenerate the reported tables.
- Handle randomness. List every seed and stochastic component, including sampling temperature, data shuffling, augmentation, parallelism effects, and judge-order randomization. State the number of independent runs and retain each run’s result.
- Report uncertainty and tests. Give per-run values, a mean or median, a spread measure, and a confidence interval or other justified uncertainty estimate. State the resampling unit and use an appropriate paired or nonparametric test before claiming an improvement.
- Release the artifact bundle. Provide runnable code, preprocessing scripts, permitted data or acquisition instructions, configuration and seed manifests, dependency locks, result CSV or JSON, plotting scripts, and a README with licenses and expected outputs.
- Document AI-assisted steps. For an LLM judge or AI-assisted analysis, preserve the model and version, exact prompts, releasable system instructions, raw outputs, parsing rules, human-review notes, and validation checks.
- State validity limits. Discuss sampling bias, contamination, construct validity, missing subgroups, metric gaming, judge reliability, external-validity limits, and compute or access constraints. Reproducibility makes a result rerunnable; it does not make it representative or valid.
1. Define exactly what the benchmark measures
Start with the decision question, not the metric name. “Does model A outperform model B?” is incomplete until you specify on which population, task distribution, prompt protocol, and capability definition. State the primary hypothesis and any secondary analyses before looking at results. Identify inclusion and exclusion rules—for example, whether corrupted examples, timeouts, abstentions, or unsafe outputs count as failures.

Give the benchmark name, release or revision, and access date. A living benchmark can change while retaining the same name, so a version tag, commit, archive identifier, or content hash is essential. Explain whether the score is computed on the full benchmark or a declared subset.

Define metrics and aggregation
Formally define every metric, its unit, its direction, and its aggregation. Accuracy, exact match, pass rate, calibration error, latency, cost, and judge preference answer different questions. Explain why each metric addresses the decision question. If examples have unequal weights, show the weighting formula. If you average task-level scores, state whether the average is macro (each task equal) or micro (each example equal), and report task-level values when practical.
AAAI’s checklist asks for a metric description and motivation; NAACL similarly requires a clear definition of the evaluation measure or statistics. Treat those as minimum reporting requirements rather than optional prose.
2. Pin the data so the evaluated population cannot drift
Record where the data came from, who assembled it, its license, and the exact revision. Include a cryptographic checksum for downloaded archives or generated manifests. Describe normalization, tokenization, filtering, deduplication, label correction, and every split. A script that silently downloads “latest” data is not reproducible.
Check leakage and contamination
Describe checks for overlap between training material and evaluation examples, near-duplicates across splits, benchmark text in pretraining corpora where known, and contamination introduced by retrieval tools. Report the method and its limitations; a failed detector does not prove that contamination is absent. Preserve the list of excluded records and the reason for each exclusion.
When data cannot be redistributed
State the legal or privacy restriction, the access request procedure, the permitted snapshot or checksum, and the exact transformation needed to recreate the evaluation files. Supply synthetic fixtures or a small public sample so the pipeline can still be tested end to end.
3. Specify the system under test without ambiguity
“Model X” is not an executable specification. Record the exact checkpoint identifier, revision or API retrieval date, tokenizer, context limit, system and user messages, few-shot examples, tool definitions, and stop sequences. Include temperature, top-p or other sampling controls, maximum output tokens, repetition controls, and retry behavior. For a hosted service, log the endpoint, region when relevant, request parameters, and date because providers can update a model behind a stable name.

Freeze prompts and orchestration
Store prompts as files rather than screenshots. Include whitespace-sensitive templates, role labels, formatting instructions, tool-call schemas, and any post-processing. If a controller retries failed requests, specify the retry count, backoff, and whether a retry consumes a new random draw. Record retrieval indexes, tool versions, and external resources used during inference.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Declare stopping and failure rules
Define what happens on a timeout, malformed output, refusal, API error, or resource exhaustion. Count it as an error, retry it, or exclude it only under a predeclared rule. Report the number of each event; silently dropping failures inflates scores.
4. Capture the execution environment
Publish operating system and kernel, CPU and GPU models, RAM and accelerator count, driver and runtime versions, framework and compiler versions, and dependency lockfiles. Record the repository commit and confirm that the working tree was clean. A container image digest or reproducible environment file is preferable to a list of package names without versions.
Hardware and performance context
For throughput, latency, energy, or cost metrics, state batch size, sequence lengths, warm-up policy, concurrency, clock or power settings, and measurement tool. Separate one-time setup from measured execution. A speed result from a warmed, dedicated accelerator is not directly comparable with a cold, shared machine.
5. Turn the experiment into a copyable protocol
A reader should be able to start from a clean checkout and reach the published tables without undocumented decisions. Include setup, data acquisition, preprocessing, evaluation, aggregation, statistical analysis, and plotting commands. Pin the evaluation-harness commit and specify expected filenames, schemas, and exit codes.

6. Treat randomness as a measured variable
List every source of stochasticity: model sampling, data order, augmentation, dropout or other inference-time randomness, thread scheduling, distributed reduction, and randomization of pair order for human or model judges. Persist the seed in each output file and record the random-number libraries and algorithms when available.
How many runs?
There is no universal number. The required run count depends on the variance, cost, and size of the claimed effect. Use a pilot to estimate variability, then choose enough independent runs for the confidence interval to answer the decision question. Never present one seed as a stable estimate. Report every run, not only the average, and explain any failed or replaced run.
Deterministic settings are not a substitute
Even with a fixed seed, GPU kernels, distributed execution, service-side changes, and nondeterministic model APIs can produce different outputs. The World Bank guidance notes that large language models can return different outputs for the same prompt. For such systems, the reproducible target is an auditable procedure and evidence trail, not a promise of bit-for-bit identity.
7. Report uncertainty and statistical tests
A single score hides whether an apparent lead is larger than run-to-run or example-to-example variation. Publish the per-seed values, central estimate, spread, sample size, and interval. State whether the interval is a confidence interval, credible interval, bootstrap percentile interval, or another method, and identify the resampling unit.
Bootstrap and confidence intervals
For example-level metrics, resample examples or matched example pairs, not individual tokens. For repeated stochastic runs, report both between-run variation and uncertainty in the aggregate; do not treat thousands of examples from one seed as thousands of independent runs. HumanEval’s methodology summary uses a “100× bootstrap · 95% CI” convention, which is a useful illustration of an explicit resampling count and confidence level, not a rule that fits every benchmark.
Comparing two systems
Use paired analysis when both systems answer the same examples. A paired bootstrap, permutation test, or another justified nonparametric test preserves the correlation between systems. For clustered tasks or users, resample at the cluster level. Report the effect size, interval, test statistic or p-value, and the predeclared threshold. Correct for multiple comparisons when testing many metrics, tasks, or model pairs.

Do not claim that one model is better because its intervals overlap or do not overlap; state the estimated difference and its uncertainty. BetterBench and the 2025 Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence review identify missing significance tests and replication scripts as recurring benchmark deficiencies. In that review, 14 of 24 prominent benchmarks failed to report statistical significance, and 17 of 24 lacked scripts for result replication.

If a field cannot be filled truthfully, write “not available,” explain why, and describe how that gap limits the claim. A documented limitation is more useful than a plausible but unverifiable value.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.9. Extra requirements for LLM judges and AI-assisted analysis
Judge-based evaluation adds another model and another layer of variance. Preserve the judge model and version, endpoint and retrieval date, system instructions where releasable, exact rubric and prompts, candidate order, temperature and sampling settings, raw responses, parser version, tie and invalid-output rules, and human review notes. Store the evidence used to validate the judge against human labels or known controls.
Separate the judge’s raw preference from the final score. Report discarded or undecidable judgments and test whether reversing candidate order changes outcomes. If prompts or system instructions cannot be released, provide a redacted description, checksum, and access procedure. Do not describe a nondeterministic judge as deterministic merely because its temperature is set to zero.

Reproducibility levels
- Executable: the code runs in a documented environment.
- Rerunnable: the same inputs and protocol produce a new result set.
- Numerically close: results fall within a declared tolerance despite nondeterminism.
- Auditable: raw inputs, outputs, seeds, prompts, and transformations permit independent checking.
- Valid: the measurement supports the intended claim for the target population. This is a separate scientific judgment, not a consequence of reproducibility.

How to compare benchmark results responsibly
Before comparing two published scores, align all of these axes:
Recommended Free Tools
- benchmark name, revision, split, and population;
- task and subgroup coverage;
- prompt, demonstrations, tools, and decoding protocol;
- metric definition, weighting, and aggregation;
- number of runs, seeds, interval method, and significance test;
- baseline implementation and checkpoint or API date;
- hardware, software, context limits, and compute budget; and
- failure, timeout, refusal, and missing-data rules.
If any difference can materially change the score, label the results non-comparable rather than placing them in one ranking. A later model revision, different prompt, new split, or different metric may represent a new experiment even when the leaderboard column has the same name.
Minimum release box
A minimally credible release contains:
- an immutable data revision or checksum and documented access path;
- the exact system, prompt, decoding, tool, and stopping configuration;
- environment versions, lockfile or container digest, and code commit;
- copyable setup and evaluation commands;
- all seeds, per-run outputs, failures, aggregate statistics, intervals, and comparison tests;
- raw and parsed outputs for any AI judge, subject to lawful redaction; and
- a limitations section covering validity, bias, contamination, and nondeterminism.
Do not compare these results without rerunning or reconciling the protocol
- Scores from different benchmark or dataset revisions.
- Scores using different splits, filters, or contamination exclusions.
- Different prompt templates, few-shot examples, tools, or decoding parameters.
- Different metric definitions, weighting, or pass/fail parsing.
- A mean from many seeds against a single-seed score.
- Results with intervals or significance tests against results that report only a point estimate.
- Different model checkpoints or hosted API retrieval dates hidden behind one product name.
- Different timeout, refusal, retry, or missing-output rules.
- Different compute budgets when the task permits test-time search, retrieval, or repeated sampling.
Common failure modes and fixes
“The script runs, but the score is different.”
Check the data checksum, benchmark commit, prompt file, tokenizer, API date, dependency lock, hardware kernels, seeds, and failure logs in that order. Compare per-example outputs before comparing aggregate scores.
“The confidence interval is implausibly narrow.”
Verify that the resampling unit matches the design and that repeated examples from one run were not treated as independent experimental runs. Report between-seed variation separately.
“A judge gives inconsistent labels.”
Persist raw outputs, repeat a declared sample, randomize and reverse candidate order, measure agreement with human labels, and report undecidable cases. Tighten the rubric only through a versioned change, then rerun the full protocol.
“Some inputs are unavailable.”
Publish checksums, acquisition instructions, legal restrictions, split manifests, preprocessing code, and a public fixture. Mark conclusions that depend on inaccessible data as conditional.
Final reporting principle
Write the report so a skeptical reader can answer five questions without contacting the authors: What was measured? On which immutable data? With which exact system and environment? How much did the result vary? What evidence supports the claim, and where does it stop? That standard turns a benchmark number into a reproducible, inspectable experiment.
