AI Data Labeling: What Labels Add to Training Data

AI data labeling adds targets or descriptions to data so machine-learning systems can learn from examples. See how labels vary by task and why quality matters.

AI data labeling is the process of adding a target or descriptive annotation to data so a machine-learning system has context for learning or evaluation. It is also commonly called data annotation. For example, an email record might be labeled “spam” or “not spam”; the label is the answer a supervised model learns to predict, not the model itself.

What is an AI data label?

A label is information attached to a data record to describe it or identify the answer relevant to a task. CNIL describes labels as descriptions that serve as “ground truth” for a model; the FDA glossary likewise describes labeling or annotation as attaching descriptive information to data. The exact format depends on what the model is meant to do.

Labels can be simple categories, numeric target values, written descriptions, or annotations tied to specific parts of a record. In supervised learning, each training example pairs input data with the target answer. The model learns patterns connecting the inputs to those answers, then uses those patterns to make predictions for new, unlabeled inputs. CNIL’s explanation of data annotation and the FDA glossary provide definitions; AWS explains the labeled-example role in collecting labeled data.

What does data labeling look like?

The annotation should be detailed enough to answer the model’s task. A whole-record category and a detailed annotation of portions of that record are different kinds of labels.

Data type Example label or annotation
Image Whether the image contains a bird or car; a more detailed task can mark the pixels belonging to an object.
Text A news article’s topic or a social post’s sentiment.
Audio A transcription or identification of important spoken words.
Video A genre or a description of relevant content.
Medical image Whether an X-ray contains a tumor, an example used by AWS.

These examples illustrate why “labeling” does not refer to one fixed format: a yes-or-no category answers a different question from a pixel-level annotation. See AWS’s data-labeling overview and Oracle’s overview of data labeling.

How are data labels created?

Labels may be assigned by people, generated automatically, or produced in a workflow that combines automated suggestions with human review. Automated labeling can help process examples, while review and consolidation steps can address disagreements or errors. The appropriate balance depends on the task and the quality controls it requires; automation does not by itself establish that labels are correct.

In a typical supervised-learning workflow, a team defines the prediction task, labels examples to match it, checks the resulting data, and uses those input-and-answer pairs to train a model. AWS describes a human-in-the-loop labeling workflow and features for automated labeling and annotation consolidation.

What makes labeled data useful?

  • Labels match the task. A label must represent the answer the model is expected to learn, rather than a loosely related description.
  • Examples resemble real inputs. AWS advises using examples representative of the data the model will encounter in use.
  • Quality controls fit the risk. Incorrect or inconsistent examples can teach the model the wrong relationship. There is no single universal accuracy threshold established for every labeling task; checks need to reflect the data, task, and consequences of errors.

For broader process guidance, ISO/IEC 5259-4:2024 is an international standard published in July 2024 on data quality in analytics and machine learning. Its scope includes supervised, unsupervised, semi-supervised, and reinforcement learning, with attention to labeling, evaluation, and lifecycle management.
