Why board-level protection matters in liquid-cooled AI racks
Liquid cooling helps support dense compute, but it also brings coolant paths near sensitive printed circuit board assemblies. If fluid or contamination reaches a board, a localized exposure could become more consequential in a highly integrated rack that is difficult to replace. The available sources do not quantify leak probability, board-failure rates, or expected losses, so the scale of the risk must be assessed for each installation.

What the proposed coating is—and what is established
In an Electronic Design article published September 18, 2026, Ken Aduddell proposes flexible, gel-state dielectric coatings applied during manufacturing or secondary assembly. He says they are intended to isolate circuitry from moisture, conductive fluids, and atmospheric contaminants. Because the article is associated with actnano and Aduddell is its Senior Director of Business Development Hyperscale, these are vendor-associated claims; the cited sources do not provide independent coating efficacy results.

Aduddell argues that protection at the hardware interface could help prevent damage before it triggers a wider failure cascade. That is a rationale for evaluation, not evidence that a particular coating prevents failures or reduces downtime. The available sources also do not establish universal acceptance criteria, insurance benefits, or lifecycle savings.
Engineering checks before applying a coating
A material that creates a protective barrier still has to meet the board’s operating and service requirements. Aduddell identifies thermal transfer and high-frequency signal propagation as concerns. His article does not provide test data or pass/fail thresholds, so those limits must come from the board’s design and system requirements.

- Thermal performance: Compare the candidate-coated board with an appropriate baseline under the intended workload and thermal conditions.
- Signal behavior: Validate dielectric and high-frequency signal performance on the actual board topology.
- Compatibility: Assess the board, coolant, likely contaminants, and service procedures together rather than treating the coating as a standalone choice.
- Serviceability: Determine how the material affects inspection, cleaning, repair, and rework, and confirm any implications with the OEM or ODM.
A practical evaluation sequence
- Map exposure points. Trace coolant routes and identify likely exposure locations, including quick disconnects, manifolds, and cold-plate interfaces.
- Qualify the material on the board. Test it against the design’s thermal and signal requirements, comparing results with baseline requirements before deciding whether it is suitable.
- Integrate with production. Work with the OEM or ODM to define the application process and bill of materials. The article gives no universal process recipe.
- Plan recovery. Establish cleanup, inspection, and recommissioning criteria before relying on coating as one part of resilience planning.
Put cost claims in context
Aduddell’s article cites approximately $1,500 for four years of gel-state protection for an advanced rack assembly and uses a $5 million rack value as a comparison. Both figures are assertions in a vendor-associated article, not independently verified prices or universal rack values. They do not establish a general return on investment: operators would need to assess the relevant hardware, deployment, service costs, and downtime exposure for their own system.
