AI cybersecurity tools compared: email security vs. endpoint detection vs. SIEM

Short answer: email security, endpoint detection and response (EDR), and security information and event management (SIEM) protect different layers. Email security blocks or quarantines malicious messages before a user acts; EDR detects and contains suspicious behavior on laptops, servers, and other devices; SIEM collects and correlates events across the whole environment so analysts can investigate multi-stage attacks and meet logging requirements. A small Microsoft 365 organization normally gets the fastest risk reduction from mailbox protections, multifactor authentication (MFA), SPF/DKIM/DMARC, and EDR-capable endpoint coverage. Add SIEM when you have enough alerts, compliance obligations, or incident complexity to justify centralized analytics and the people needed to run it.

What each tool actually protects

These products are often marketed together as “AI cybersecurity,” but they are not interchangeable. The decisive difference is where each product observes activity and what it can do in response.

Control Primary scope Typical telemetry Typical response Best at Important blind spot
Email security Messages and collaboration services Sender authentication, message content, URLs, attachments, impersonation signals, delivery and user-report events Block, quarantine, rewrite or detonate links and attachments, warn users, and provide investigation reports Stopping phishing, malware delivery, business-email compromise and impersonation before a click Does not see the full process, memory and file activity that follows on a device
EDR Laptops, desktops, servers and other managed endpoints Processes, command lines, network connections, logins, registry and file-system changes, and related behavioral signals Isolate a device, quarantine a file, terminate malicious activity and trigger automatic attack disruption Detecting and containing ransomware, malware and post-compromise behavior on devices Cannot by itself provide complete visibility into mailboxes, identity systems, cloud services or every network log
SIEM Cross-environment security operations Aggregated logs and alerts from identity, endpoints, email, cloud workloads, network infrastructure and applications Correlate events, raise incidents, run analytics, and orchestrate multi-system workflows through SOAR integrations Connecting apparently separate clues, threat hunting, compliance reporting and centralized investigation Needs log onboarding, detection engineering, tuning, retention planning and analyst capacity

The layers complement one another. A malicious invoice may be rejected by email security; if a user opens a novel payload, EDR can expose the child process and isolate the laptop; SIEM can connect that endpoint event with an unusual sign-in, mailbox rule and cloud access from the same account.

Email security: the pre-click control

Email security operates at the message and collaboration layer. Microsoft’s documented Defender for Office 365 ladder includes built-in anti-malware, anti-spam and anti-phishing controls, impersonation protection, Safe Links, Safe Attachments, quarantine and reporting. Those controls inspect content and delivery context before a user opens a message or follows a link.

What the Microsoft plans add

Microsoft lists Defender for Office 365 Plan 1 at $2.00 per user per month, paid yearly (Microsoft, 2026). Plan 2 adds Threat Explorer, advanced hunting, automated investigation and response, attack-simulation training and XDR integration. The price is a published Microsoft figure for that plan and billing term; it is not a universal price for every region, agreement or package.

Plan 1 is aimed at preventive mailbox protection and user-facing controls. Plan 2 is relevant when a security team needs to search across messages, investigate campaigns, automate remediation and connect email evidence with other Microsoft security signals.

Domain authentication is part of email security

Filtering a malicious message is only one side of the problem. NIST’s DNS-based email-security work focuses on authenticating mail-transfer agents, signing and encrypting email, and reducing risks in information exchanged by email. For domains used in Microsoft 365, Microsoft recommends configuring SPF, DKIM and DMARC; it also recommends handling domains that are not used to send mail so attackers cannot exploit an unprotected namespace.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • SPF publishes which systems are allowed to send mail for a domain.
  • DKIM applies a cryptographic signature that receiving systems can validate.
  • DMARC lets the domain owner publish alignment and handling rules and receive reports about authentication failures.

These records reduce spoofing and improve trust decisions, but they do not replace filtering, MFA, endpoint controls or incident response. A correctly authenticated message can still be a compromised supplier’s real account.

Where email security stops

Email controls can block the delivery path and expose campaign-level evidence, but they do not provide the endpoint process and memory context that EDR supplies. If a user downloads a file from a permitted service, runs a malicious script from a USB drive or is compromised through a browser exploit, mailbox telemetry alone cannot show what executed on the device.

EDR: behavior and containment on the device

EDR continuously monitors endpoint activity rather than judging only whether an individual file matches a known signature. Microsoft says Defender for Endpoint creates near-real-time, actionable detections, groups related alerts into incidents, stores endpoint behavioral telemetry for six months, and supports response actions including device isolation and file quarantine.

What EDR can reveal

  • A process spawning an unusual child process or scripting interpreter.
  • Network connections associated with suspicious infrastructure.
  • Unexpected logons, privilege changes or lateral-movement behavior.
  • Registry and file-system modifications that accompany persistence or ransomware.
  • Relationships among processes, users, devices and alerts that would be separate events in a basic antivirus console.

That context is why EDR is the primary control for an attack already executing on an endpoint. It can show the chain of events, not just the final infected file.

Response and automatic attack disruption

Defender for Endpoint supports administrator-initiated response, including isolating a device from the network and quarantining a file. Microsoft also documents automatic attack disruption that uses signal correlation and AI to contain active ransomware, business-email-compromise and adversary-in-the-middle attacks. Automatic actions should be tested against business-critical devices and documented so responders know what was isolated, what communications remain available, and how to release a device safely.

CISA’s Continuous Diagnostics and Mitigation requirements provide a useful capability checklist: EDR should support administrator-initiated behavioral searches, integrate alerts and responses with agency SIEM platforms, export endpoint event data and execute configured automatic response actions. Even outside government, those requirements expose integration questions that matter when selecting an EDR.

EDR coverage mistakes

  • Leaving gaps: servers, shared workstations, privileged-user laptops and unmanaged devices often become the attacker’s route around a well-protected fleet.
  • Collecting without response: an alert that nobody can investigate or contain is not equivalent to protection.
  • Ignoring identity: endpoint behavior needs to be interpreted alongside sign-in and account events to distinguish a stolen credential from a local software problem.
  • Overlooking retention: six months is the documented Defender for Endpoint behavioral-telemetry period; other products and data types may have different limits.

SIEM: the cross-environment investigation layer

A SIEM collects and correlates logs and security signals from many systems. Microsoft Sentinel is described as a cloud-native SIEM and SOAR platform that analyzes anomalies and multistage threats, uses user and entity behavior analytics (UEBA) and threat-intelligence imports, and can automate actions such as device isolation and data quarantine when integrated with Defender XDR.

Why correlation changes an investigation

One failed sign-in is usually noise. A series of failed sign-ins followed by a successful login from an unusual location, a new mailbox forwarding rule, a PowerShell process on a workstation and a download from a cloud application is a much stronger incident. A SIEM provides the place to join those events, apply a time window and entity relationship, and present a single investigation path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft’s comparison defines EDR as device-level monitoring and response, while SIEM aggregates and analyzes logs for threat detection and compliance. XDR sits between those concepts by correlating signals across endpoints, email, identity, cloud workloads and network infrastructure. A SIEM can ingest those XDR signals while also retaining data from systems outside one vendor’s security stack.

Email and endpoint data in a SIEM

Microsoft documents exporting Defender for Office 365 phishing, malware, URL and automated-investigation events to a SIEM through the Office 365 Activity Management API. Confirm which event types, fields, latency and retention options are available for your tenant before designing detections. The existence of an API does not guarantee that every product, license or event is included in the same way.

For endpoint data, check whether the EDR can export raw events as well as high-level alerts. Raw process, network and logon records support hunting; summarized incidents reduce ingestion volume but may omit the detail needed to reconstruct an attack.

Do you need all three?

There is no universal requirement to buy three separate products. You need coverage for the risks and systems you actually operate. In most organizations, however, the controls are complementary rather than substitutes: email security reduces initial delivery, EDR limits execution and persistence on devices, and SIEM improves cross-system detection and response.

Organization or risk profile Practical starting point When to add the next layer
Small Microsoft 365 organization with limited security staff Built-in mailbox protections, MFA, SPF/DKIM/DMARC and an EDR-capable endpoint plan Add SIEM when alert volume, compliance, distributed systems or incident complexity requires centralized analytics
High ransomware or lateral-movement concern EDR on every supported asset, tested device isolation and automatic response, plus strong email filtering Add centralized logging to connect identity, endpoint, email and backup events and to support investigation
Mature security operations center or regulated environment Email security and EDR feeding a SIEM/XDR architecture Expand retention, UEBA, threat hunting and SOAR playbooks as staffing and evidence requirements grow

This sequencing is a practical recommendation based on the documented control scopes. It is not a claim that one vendor’s bundle is best for every organization.

Is SIEM worth it if you already have EDR?

Often yes, but only when the organization can use it. EDR answers, “What happened on this device, and can I contain it?” SIEM answers, “What happened across devices, identities, email, cloud services and network systems, and how are these events related?”

SIEM adds value when

  • Investigations repeatedly cross endpoint, identity, email and cloud boundaries.
  • You need centralized, tamper-resistant or policy-defined retention for audits and incident response.
  • Multiple security products produce alerts that must be deduplicated and prioritized.
  • A SOC needs threat hunting, UEBA or scheduled detections rather than console-by-console review.
  • Response playbooks must coordinate actions such as disabling an account, isolating a device and quarantining data.

SIEM may be premature when

  • There is no owner for onboarding data sources, tuning detections and responding to incidents.
  • Endpoint coverage is incomplete or basic identity protections are missing.
  • The expected use is only to store logs without a retention, search or response objective.
  • Ingestion and retention costs cannot be bounded from the expected event volume.

A SIEM is not a magic layer that makes weak controls effective. Fix mailbox authentication, MFA, endpoint coverage and response procedures first; then use SIEM to connect and scale those signals.

How to compare products before buying

1. Map coverage to your assets

List domains, mailboxes, endpoints, servers, identities, cloud workloads, network devices and critical applications. Mark which systems are managed, which can export logs and which are outside the proposed platform. A product that protects only the easiest assets can create false confidence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Compare telemetry depth

For email, ask whether the service inspects URLs, attachments, impersonation and user reports. For EDR, verify process, command-line, network, logon, registry and file-system visibility, plus the searchable retention period. For SIEM, identify every connector, event field, ingestion delay and archive tier. “AI-powered” does not specify what data is collected or how long it remains searchable.

3. Test response, not just detection

Document the exact actions available to an administrator and to automation: message quarantine, device isolation, file quarantine, account disablement, ticket creation and evidence preservation. Confirm approval gates, rollback procedures and the effect on remote users. CISA’s EDR criteria—behavioral search, SIEM integration, event export and configured automatic response—are a useful minimum checklist.

4. Check integration and portability

Review APIs, data schemas, identity integration, export limits and retention. Confirm that email and EDR alerts can feed the SIEM with enough context to reconstruct an incident. Ask whether detections and playbooks can be exported if you change vendors. Microsoft’s documented Office 365 Activity Management API path is an example of the kind of integration to verify.

5. Budget the operating model

Email licensing is commonly quoted per user, EDR per device or user, and SIEM by ingestion, analytics and retention. The only published figure in this comparison is Defender for Office 365 Plan 1 at $2.00 per user per month paid yearly in Microsoft’s 2026 listing. SIEM and EDR prices vary by edition, data volume, contract and region; obtain a current quote and model peak ingestion rather than relying on a headline rate.

A staged deployment plan

  1. Inventory and prioritize. Record every sending domain, mailbox, endpoint, server, identity provider, cloud workload and critical application. Identify unsupported or unmanaged assets.
  2. Harden identity and mail flow. Require MFA, configure SPF, DKIM and DMARC for Microsoft 365 domains (including domains that do not send mail), and enable the available anti-malware, anti-spam, anti-phishing, impersonation, Safe Links, Safe Attachments and quarantine controls.
  3. Deploy EDR broadly. Cover supported laptops, desktops and servers, then verify that telemetry arrives and incidents group correctly. Set administrator permissions and test device isolation and file quarantine on a noncritical device.
  4. Define response ownership. Write who reviews alerts, who can isolate a device or quarantine a message, how users are contacted, and how evidence is preserved. Practice a ransomware and a compromised-mailbox scenario.
  5. Onboard SIEM data selectively. Start with identity, EDR, email, cloud control-plane and critical network logs. Record event volume, latency, retention and cost for each source before adding lower-value telemetry.
  6. Build and tune detections. Create rules for impossible-travel or anomalous sign-ins, suspicious mailbox changes, endpoint attack chains and coordinated email-plus-endpoint activity. Use UEBA and threat intelligence where they improve a defined investigation.
  7. Automate carefully. Add SOAR actions such as account disablement, device isolation and data quarantine only after testing false positives, approval steps and rollback. Review every automated action after an incident or major environment change.

Common failure modes and fixes

“We have an email filter, so phishing is solved.”

Filters reduce delivery but cannot prevent every trusted-account compromise, malicious cloud link or post-click execution. Keep MFA, domain authentication, user reporting and EDR coverage in place.

“EDR is installed, so the SOC can investigate anything.”

EDR cannot see every mailbox, identity, SaaS or network event. Export endpoint data and pair it with the logs needed for the incidents you care about.

“We bought a SIEM, but alerts are unmanageable.”

Unbounded ingestion and untuned rules create cost and fatigue. Onboard high-value sources first, define retention by use case, suppress duplicates and assign an owner for detection engineering.

“Automatic isolation disrupted the business.”

Use staged policies, exclusions based on documented evidence rather than convenience, and a tested release process. Keep an alternate communication path for an isolated user or site.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Logs are present but unusable during an incident.”

Check clock synchronization, entity identifiers, field normalization, search permissions and retention before an emergency. Run a tabletop exercise that requires tracing one account across email, endpoint and cloud records.

Bottom-line buying guidance

Choose email security when your immediate problem is phishing, malicious attachments, impersonation or spoofed domains. Choose EDR when you need visibility and containment on devices, especially against ransomware and lateral movement. Choose SIEM when investigations and compliance require a joined view of identities, endpoints, email, cloud and network activity—and when you have the staff and budget to operate it.

For most small Microsoft 365 organizations, the sensible order is mailbox and domain protections, MFA, complete EDR coverage, then SIEM after a clear operational trigger. For a mature SOC or regulated environment, integrate all three: email and endpoint controls generate high-value signals, while SIEM/XDR correlates them and automates carefully governed response.
