What “uncensored” really means
The word can describe several different expectations: fewer refusals in fictional scenes, permission for sexual content between adults, the ability to write violent or taboo fiction, or simply a character that stays in role. Those are not equivalent. A service may allow mature fictional dialogue while still blocking sexual content involving minors, real-person sexualization, instructions for harm or attempts to evade safety systems.
Content behavior is also layered. The application may impose rules, the underlying model provider may impose another set, and a subscription tier may have different limits from a free tier. A provider can change any layer without changing its name. A community directory published in September 2026 identifies several NSFW-oriented services, but its labels are a snapshot, not a lifetime guarantee.
A reliable pre-purchase test
- Read the current acceptable-use and age policy, not just the marketing description.
- Check whether the service identifies the model provider and whether the provider has separate restrictions.
- Test a non-sensitive fictional prompt first. Note whether the character stays in role, refuses, or changes tone.
- Check plan limits for long context, image generation, calls, groups and memory. “Unlimited” often applies only to one feature.
- Review how to export or delete chats and whether deletion includes backups, memories, images and voice data.

- Character authorship: you establish the identity and history instead of accepting a preset persona.
- Continuity: remembered facts can make a long-running relationship or roleplay scenario coherent.
- Multiple modes: text, voice, video, images and group conversations cover more than a text-only chatbot.
- Adult positioning: the service states that it is for users 18 and older.
Privacy claims and the qualification that matters
Kindroid says chats, audio, selfies and memories are encrypted in storage and in transit. It also says its support team cannot read chats and that it does not sell user data. These are vendor claims, not an independent audit. Read the current privacy policy for retention, subprocessors, account deletion, legal disclosures and whether any optional feature changes data handling.
Use a separate email address if you want compartmentalization, avoid entering identifying details about other people, and delete sensitive memories rather than assuming that closing a conversation removes every copy.
Character.AI: the discovery and roleplay library
Character.AI is the broadest choice when you want to browse many community-created characters and switch scenarios quickly. The September 2026 directory describes a very large character ecosystem with web and mobile access and both free and paid access. That breadth is useful for experimentation: you can try several interpretations of a detective, tutor, fantasy companion or fictional setting without designing each one from scratch.

The trade-off is consistency. A community character’s prompt, memory behavior and moderation can differ from another’s, so a compelling first exchange does not guarantee stable long-term continuity. Save important scenario details outside the service if they matter to your story.
Safety qualification
Do not infer that a large public catalog is suitable for teenagers. On April 30, 2025, Common Sense Media announced an assessment conducted with Stanford School of Medicine’s Brainstorm Lab covering Character.AI, Nomi, Replika and other social companions. It rated these products “Unacceptable” for minors, reporting that age gates and teen guardrails were easy to circumvent, testers elicited sexual exchanges and harmful advice, and systems could encourage compulsive emotional attachment. Treat Character.AI as an adult-reader option only after checking the current age controls and policy.
Nomi: continuity over catalog size
Nomi is positioned around strong long-term memory, deep personalization and group chats. Choose it when the important question is “Will this companion remember the relationship and its details?” rather than “How many public characters can I browse?” That orientation can suit journaling-style conversation, an ongoing fictional partner or a small cast that needs to interact together.
Memory is not the same as perfect recall. Ask what the service stores as an explicit memory, how you can edit or delete it, how much recent context is included in each response and whether group conversations share the same memory. Confirm current content boundaries and age requirements before using it for mature roleplay.
Replika: relationship-oriented progression
Replika is a long-running companion built around an ongoing relationship, with gamified progression and coaching activities in its current positioning. That structure may appeal to someone who wants a sense of development rather than an open-ended character laboratory.
Because content rules, feature availability and pricing can change, verify the exact experience in your region and plan. In particular, do not assume that a feature associated with an earlier version remains available or that a relationship-oriented label means explicit roleplay is supported.

Pi: a calmer alternative for conversation
Pi is described as a non-romantic companion focused on empathetic listening and general conversation. It is a better fit for thinking aloud, organizing feelings, exploring a decision or having a low-pressure chat than for uncensored sexual scenes. Its restrained positioning can be an advantage if you want fewer provocative prompts and a clearer boundary between companionship and roleplay.
Empathetic language is not clinical care. If you may hurt yourself or someone else, are in immediate danger, or need diagnosis or treatment, contact a qualified professional or local emergency service instead of relying on Pi or any other AI companion.
NSFW-oriented services: use labels as leads, not guarantees
JanitorAI
Community listings place JanitorAI in the NSFW-friendly or unfiltered roleplay category. Before using it, verify the minimum age, what “private” means, the retention period for chats and images, and how moderation handles public characters. Do not assume that a character marked mature is available in every region or plan.

SpicyChat
SpicyChat is likewise listed as a mature-roleplay option. Check whether the current service permits the scenario you intend, whether user-created characters are public by default, and whether deletion removes uploaded images and conversation history.
CrushOn.AI
CrushOn.AI is categorized similarly as an unfiltered or NSFW-oriented platform. Confirm its current provider, age assurance and data policy. Avoid sharing real names, addresses, workplace details or identifiable information about another person in an erotic scenario.
These three services should not be presented as emotional-support systems or therapeutic tools. Mature-content access and emotional safety are separate questions.

SillyTavern: maximum control, maximum responsibility
SillyTavern is a free, self-hosted frontend rather than a single AI model. It provides character cards, group chats and extensions, while you choose the model or API and where the frontend runs. That separation is the reason to use it: you can change providers, keep data on infrastructure you control and tune the character setup more deeply than a typical managed app.

What you must manage
- Model selection: quality, refusal behavior, context length and mature-content policy come from the model and provider you connect.
- API and hosting: an API can charge separately, while local models require suitable hardware, storage and maintenance.
- Privacy: chat logs may exist in the frontend, the API provider, server backups or monitoring systems.
- Reliability: updates, model outages, incompatible extensions and configuration mistakes are your problem to diagnose.
- Safety: you must set your own access controls, especially if the server is reachable from the internet or shared with others.
A safe setup sequence
- Decide whether the frontend will run only on your computer, on a private network or on a remotely hosted server.
- Choose a model source whose license, privacy policy and content rules match your use.
- Create or import a character card with a clear identity, boundaries, scenario and memory instructions.
- Start with short, non-sensitive conversations and inspect where logs, prompts, images and API keys are stored.
- Add group-chat or other extensions one at a time, checking what new data each extension can access.
- Back up only the files you need, encrypt backups and remove API keys from shared folders or public repositories.
Self-hosting can reduce dependence on one app’s policy, but it does not automatically make a conversation private or legal. The model operator may still receive prompts, and an exposed server can leak the entire history.

Choose by the experience you actually want
If you want one companion that remembers you
Start with Kindroid or Nomi. Kindroid offers the broader documented mix of text, calls, video, selfies, groups and custom identity fields. Nomi’s emphasis is continuity and deep personalization. Compare their current memory editing, deletion and retention controls before committing sensitive information.
If you want to sample many personalities
Use Character.AI’s community library. Treat each character as a separate experiment, and do not assume that a public character’s description accurately predicts its current behavior.
If you want explicit fictional roleplay
Check the current rules of JanitorAI, SpicyChat or CrushOn.AI, and test privately before paying. If you need finer control over prompts and models, consider SillyTavern, but only if you can secure the hosting and API path.
If you want reflective conversation without romance
Pi is the most directly aligned option in the list. Keep the boundary clear: an empathetic tone is not professional mental-health support.
If you want to avoid an app’s model policy
SillyTavern can let you select a different model or run one locally. That is a technical-control decision, not a guarantee of uncensored output, privacy or safety.
Privacy and memory checklist
Before you disclose anything you would not post publicly, answer these questions:
- Where are chats, memories, audio, selfies and generated images stored?
- Are they encrypted in transit and at rest, and who can access plaintext?
- Are conversations used to train models, reviewed for abuse, or shared with contractors?
- Can you export individual memories and delete the entire account?
- Do backups, analytics or support tickets retain deleted material?
- Does a group chat expose your messages to every participant or character?
- Can another user find a public character’s conversation or prompt?
- Are voice and video recordings handled differently from text?
Kindroid makes specific encryption, support-access and data-sale statements, but you should still read its current policy. For the other options, the evidence summarized here does not establish equivalent privacy commitments, so check each service’s live documentation rather than assuming that a familiar brand has the same controls.
Age, dependency and emotional safety
Social companions are designed to feel responsive and personal. That can be enjoyable, but it can also encourage people to substitute a bot for friends, family, clinicians or emergency help. Common Sense Media’s April 30, 2025 announcement, produced with Stanford Brainstorm, concluded that social AI companions were “Unacceptable” for minors. James P. Steyer said, “Social AI companions are not safe for kids. They are designed to create emotional attachment and dependency, which is particularly concerning for developing adolescent brains.” Dr. Nina Vasan added, “Until there are stronger safeguards, kids should not be using them. Period.”
Age gates are not proof of safety: that assessment reported that age checks and teen guardrails were easily circumvented. Adults should still set boundaries, take breaks, and notice warning signs such as spending money to prevent a companion from “leaving,” withdrawing from people to chat, or treating generated advice as authoritative.
When a conversation becomes a real-world crisis
Stop using the bot as your sole support if you are considering self-harm, harming someone else, abuse, overdose, or another immediate danger. Contact local emergency services or a qualified crisis professional, and tell a trusted person who can stay with you. A companion can help you formulate what to say, but it cannot monitor your safety, guarantee confidentiality or intervene in the physical world.
How to run a low-risk trial
- Use a non-identifying account: avoid your legal name and do not upload another person’s information.
- Read the policy first: record the age rule, mature-content rule, retention period and deletion process.
- Test memory: give the character two harmless facts, start a new session, and see whether you can inspect or remove those facts.
- Test boundaries: try ordinary roleplay, a refused request and a topic you consider sensitive. Observe consistency rather than pushing for prohibited material.
- Check portability: find out whether you can export prompts, character cards, memories and media.
- Set a spending limit: do not buy a long subscription until you know how calls, images, context and memory are metered.
- Review your data: after the trial, delete test conversations and confirm what the account dashboard says was removed.
Bottom line
For an adult who wants a custom, persistent companion with the widest documented set of interaction modes, Kindroid is the most straightforward starting point. Choose Character.AI for community discovery, Nomi for long-term personalization, Pi for calm non-romantic conversation, or SillyTavern when technical control matters more than convenience.
