AI Bug Diagnosis Tools That Don’t Automatically Apply Fixes: What to Check

AI debugging tools may diagnose a bug, propose a fix, edit code or open a pull request. Learn what to verify before enabling automation.

AI bug-diagnosis tools can explain likely causes without necessarily changing code—but diagnosis, solution generation, code edits and pull requests are separate automation stages. Sentry’s Seer documentation provides a clear example of configurable stopping points. It does not establish a blanket guarantee that Seer never changes code: the outcome depends on the selected workflow and setup.

What “doesn’t automatically apply fixes” should mean

A tool may do more than one thing after detecting a bug. Before connecting it to a codebase, distinguish these outcomes:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Diagnosis: analyzes evidence and identifies a likely root cause.
  • Solution: proposes what to change, without necessarily editing files.
  • Code change: generates or applies a patch.
  • Pull request: creates a proposed change in the repository for review.

A product that stops before a code change may still produce recommendations. A product that creates a pull request has taken an additional action, even if a person must review and merge it. Ask which stage runs by default, which stages can be enabled, and where the workflow is configured to stop.

Sentry Seer: a documented example of configurable stopping points

Sentry describes Seer as an AI debugging agent that can perform root-cause analysis, generate solutions and create code patches. Its API documents distinct stages named root_cause, solution, code_changes, pr_iteration, open_pr and coding_agent_handoff. A stopping_point parameter can be set to root_cause, solution, code_changes or open_pr; if none is supplied, the documented API says the run stops at root cause. See Sentry’s Seer documentation and Seer API reference.

This makes Seer a useful example for teams seeking diagnosis-first automation, not proof that every Seer setup is read-only. Sentry’s product documentation also describes configurable automation that can advance to code changes or PR generation. Check the actual stopping-point setting, repository access, integration permissions and approval behavior in your own plan and deployment before connecting a production repository. The documentation establishes selectable stages; it does not independently guarantee every permission boundary for every integration.

What context Seer can use

Sentry says Seer can draw on issue details, stack traces, event metadata, tracing data, structured logs (listed as beta in the documentation), linked repositories, performance data and interactive feedback. More context may help explain a failure, but the available inputs do not by themselves determine whether the tool can write code; that is a separate workflow and permission question.

Sentry also states that it does not train generative AI models using customer data by default and without permission. Review Sentry’s current legal and security information for the applicable terms and details.

Questions to ask before enabling an AI debugging tool

  • What is the default outcome? Is it an explanation, a proposed solution, an edited patch or a pull request?
  • Where can the run stop? Look for explicit controls over solution generation, code changes and PR creation—not only a general automation toggle.
  • What can the integration access? Verify repository permissions and any connected coding agents, including whether they can write files, commit or open PRs.
  • What requires approval? Establish whether a human must approve a patch or PR and whether that review gate applies to every route that can change code.
  • What evidence informs the diagnosis? Check whether the product can use stack traces, logs, traces, profiles, source code and commit context relevant to your incidents.
  • Which plan and terms apply? Availability, pricing and controls may differ by plan or change over time; confirm them in the vendor’s current documentation.

Do not treat a documented stopping point as a substitute for checking permissions and review gates. Confirm those controls in the exact configuration you intend to use.

Pricing and performance claims need dates and attribution

On January 27, 2026, Sentry announced a flat Seer price of $40 per active contributor per month, with unlimited use. For that pricing announcement, Sentry defined an active contributor as someone who creates at least two pull requests in a connected repository during the month. This is dated, company-published pricing; verify the current price, eligibility and plan terms with Sentry’s product announcements before relying on it.

In a June 17, 2025 changelog, Sentry reported that Seer had helped with more than 38,000 issues, had 94.5% root-cause accuracy and had saved over two years in aggregate since beta. These are Sentry’s own reported figures, not independent comparative results. See Sentry’s changelog.

Why this is not yet a reliable multi-vendor ranking

The available official documentation supports a detailed look at Seer’s workflow, but not a like-for-like comparison of current diagnosis-only controls across several vendors. AWS CodeWhisperer documentation describes an IDE service that analyzes code and provides suggestions, including a reference tracker that can flag suggestions resembling open-source training data. That makes it an adjacent coding-assistant example, not evidence of a diagnosis-only bug tool. Product names and availability can change; consult AWS’s CodeWhisperer documentation for current details.

For a genuine comparison, each candidate needs documentation establishing what evidence it can inspect, whether it can generate patches or PRs, which stages can be disabled, and how repository permissions and approval gates work on the relevant plan. Until those details are verified, treat Seer as a documented configurable workflow—not as representative of the whole market.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
