Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor most people using an up-to-date Windows 11 home PC, Microsoft Defender is a reasonable default—provided its real-time protection is on and you keep Windows updated. Consider a third-party antivirus when you need a specific feature Defender does not provide, such as identity monitoring, parental controls or a bundled VPN. Before switching, know that turning on another antivirus automatically turns Defender Antivirus off.
Is Microsoft Defender enough for Windows 11?
Microsoft Defender Antivirus is built into Windows 11 and provides ongoing malware protection with automatic security-intelligence updates. Microsoft’s guidance says its default protections meet many users’ everyday needs when enabled and Windows is kept current. That is a sensible starting point for a home user who downloads carefully and does not need extras from a security suite.

Independent test results offer a useful check, but they are snapshots, not guarantees. In AV-TEST’s January–February 2026 test of Microsoft Defender Antivirus Consumer 4.18 on Windows 11 Professional (English, 64-bit), Defender scored 100% in each month against the tested zero-day web and email threats, and 100% in each month against the test’s recent reference set of widespread malware. The reference set covered malware discovered in the prior four weeks. These results describe those test conditions, not every threat or every PC.
AV-TEST scores protection, performance and usability separately, awarding up to six points in each category, for a maximum of 18. A high detection result alone does not tell you how often a product interrupts legitimate work or how much it affects system performance.

When should you consider third-party antivirus?
Look at a third-party product when it solves a concrete need rather than simply because it is paid software. Microsoft identifies identity monitoring and built-in VPNs as examples of extras that may matter to some users. Parental controls or other suite features may also be relevant, depending on the product and your needs.
- Identity monitoring: Consider it if you want alerts or services related to personal information, and verify exactly what the subscription covers.
- VPN: A bundled VPN may be convenient if you need one, but check its limits and terms rather than assuming every plan provides the same service.
- Parental controls or other tools: Compare the specific features and platform coverage with what you already use; do not pay for a bundle of functions you will not use.
Antivirus is only one layer of security. It cannot guarantee protection from every phishing attempt, social-engineering trick or novel exploit. Keep software updated, use strong account security, be cautious with links and downloads, and maintain backups of important files.
How to compare antivirus products fairly
Compare products tested by the same lab on the same platform and during the same period. Lab scores from different tests are not directly interchangeable: versions, configurations, test methods and scoring systems vary.

| What to compare | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Protection | Distinguish tests of real-world web and email threats from tests against a reference set of known malware. Neither covers every possible attack. |
| False alarms | Check how often legitimate files or sites are wrongly blocked. AV-Comparatives says its award decisions take false alarms into account. |
| Performance and usability | Review these separately from protection. AV-TEST scores each category independently, with up to six points per category. |
| Features and value | Identify which included extras you actually need, then compare their coverage and terms rather than relying on the suite’s feature count. |
For context, AV-Comparatives’ 2025 Consumer Summary Report gave Microsoft three Advanced+, two Advanced and one Standard award across the tests it describes. That tally is not a single protection percentage or a prediction for 2026. Its Real-World Protection Test covered July–October 2025, and its awards account for false alarms as well as protection results. AV-Comparatives notes that users who do not care about false alarms can instead consider the protection rates in its report; the trade-off is that a wrongly blocked legitimate file or site can disrupt everyday use.
How to check Defender and Windows Security settings
Windows Security lets you review current threats and scan history, start scans, and manage antivirus settings. Microsoft Support documents these controls for Windows 10 and Windows 11; exact screens may vary with Windows updates.
- Open Start > Windows Security, then select Virus & threat protection.
- Review the current threats and protection status shown on the page. Use Quick scan for a faster check, or open Scan options to run a full scan.
- Open Virus & threat protection settings and check that real-time protection is enabled if Defender is your active antivirus.
- For ransomware protection, find Ransomware protection and review Controlled folder access. This feature can stop unknown apps from changing files in protected folders; check that the apps you rely on can still work as expected.
Be cautious with exclusions: files or locations excluded from Defender are no longer checked by its real-time protection. Avoid broad exclusions and add one only when necessary.

What happens if you install another antivirus?
Microsoft Learn states: “If you install and turn on another antivirus app, Microsoft Defender Antivirus turns off automatically.” In other words, do not assume that installing a second product means both are providing full real-time antivirus protection.
Recommended Free Tools
After installing or removing a product, open Windows Security and check which antivirus provider is active. If you intended to return to Defender, confirm its protection status there rather than relying on the app list alone.
Quick Recap
Which should you choose?
- Choose Microsoft Defender as your default if you use Windows 11, keep the system updated, leave its protections enabled and do not need a particular suite feature.
- Choose a third-party product if it provides a specific, worthwhile extra for your household or work and you have checked its features, test results and impact on usability.
- Whichever you use, verify the active provider in Windows Security and treat antivirus as one part of a broader security routine.
