AI companies could struggle to earn enough from unreliable or cheaper models to cover chips, power, inference and debt. If a highly connected firm such as OpenAI then failed to meet its commitments, losses could spread through suppliers, lenders, investors and stock-market indexes. The Bank of England has separately warned that stretched AI valuations and growing credit links could amplify losses, while noting that cash and equity funding had limited near-term systemic risk in its latest assessment.
What Gary Marcus is warning about
In a June 10, 2026 post reproducing an interview with investor Steve Eisman, AI critic Gary Marcus described the giant generative-AI buildout as a bet with a low probability of success, but not zero. He said that if OpenAI could not meet its obligations, “that’s gonna have ripples throughout the market.” Marcus’s scenario is that OpenAI struggles to make ends meet while Anthropic and Google win more business, leaving large chip, cloud and data-center commitments booked by companies such as Oracle and Nvidia.

Marcus made a similar argument on CNN on December 27, 2025. He said AI systems hallucinate, make serious mistakes and require humans in the loop, limiting the returns businesses may receive. He linked a price war and weak company returns to more than a trillion dollars of data-center investment, warning that oversupply and excessive bank lending could produce “a repeat of 2008.” These are risk scenarios offered by Marcus, not proof that a banking crisis is imminent.

The Economic Times identifies Marcus as an NYU professor emeritus, founder of Geometric Intelligence (acquired by Uber in 2016), co-founder of Robust.AI and a 2023 Senate witness. Its reporting says he questions whether OpenAI can justify its spending or achieve the valuation investors may expect from a future initial public offering.

Why the scale of AI spending matters to financial stability
The Bank of England’s December 2025 financial-stability report said “many risky asset valuations remain materially stretched, particularly for technology companies focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI).” It estimated that AI infrastructure spending over the following five years could exceed $5 trillion, with roughly half financed externally, mostly through debt. If those estimates are realized, a correction would affect not only technology shares but also corporate borrowers, lenders and owners of infrastructure assets.
Other reporting illustrates how quickly the capital requirements are rising. Kiplinger, citing Apollo analysis on October 14, 2026, put AI spending at about 2% of gross domestic product and projected it could reach 3%. The same report, citing Bloomberg data, projected Big Tech capital expenditure of $1 trillion in 2027, compared with $700 billion in 2026 and $380 billion in 2025. Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang was cited for estimates that a new AI model can cost about $1 billion to develop and that a 1-gigawatt data center can cost about $60 billion. Those are reported estimates and projections, not guaranteed spending totals.

How an AI downturn could spread beyond technology
- Profitability shock: Token prices could fall, enterprise demand could disappoint or model reliability could remain too weak for customers to pay enough. Revenue would then fail to cover inference, chips, electricity, staffing and scheduled debt payments.
- Equity repricing: AI-linked companies represent a large share of major stock indexes. A sharp decline could therefore reduce index-fund and institutional-portfolio values even for investors that never selected an AI company directly.
- Credit losses: As more infrastructure is funded with corporate debt or private credit, lenders and bondholders would absorb losses when borrowers miss payments or assets are worth less than their financing.
- Fixed infrastructure commitments: Long-term contracts for chips, power, land, cloud capacity and data centers can remain payable after demand slows. Lease repackaging and tranching by default risk may make it harder to see which investors ultimately hold the exposure.
- Macroeconomic spillovers: Falling technology values and tighter financing could reduce investment, hiring and business demand, weakening growth outside the sector.
The Atlantic reported in November 2025 that private-equity funding, data-center leases repackaged into tradable bonds and risk tranching were becoming part of the financing chain. It explicitly cautioned that data centers are not subprime mortgages and that many companies involved are blue-chip firms. The comparison with 2008 is therefore about how complex financing can transmit losses, not a claim that the underlying assets are identical.

AI correction versus the 2008 mortgage crisis
| Comparison axis | 2008 housing crisis | Possible AI downturn |
|---|---|---|
| Primary financing | Mortgages were pooled, securitized and sold through the financial system. | Funding is a mix of company equity, corporate debt, private credit, leases and infrastructure contracts. |
| Leverage and maturity | High household and financial-sector leverage combined with short-term funding against long-lived mortgage assets. | Risk would depend on how much debt finances data centers and equipment, and whether repayment dates arrive before AI revenue does. |
| Concentration | Banks and investors held large, correlated mortgage exposures. | Exposure could be distributed among banks, private-credit funds, hedge funds, pensions, suppliers and index investors. |
| Transparency | Structured products obscured the quality and location of mortgage risk. | Lease repackaging, private financing and circular commitments could obscure who bears losses, although the scale and structures are not yet equivalent. |
| Underlying cash flow | Mortgage payments supported the securities until defaults rose. | AI revenues must validate spending on models, chips, power and data centers; that business case remains uncertain. |
| Containment | Authorities ultimately used emergency lending, guarantees and bank rescues. | Outcome would depend on exposure size, disclosure and whether regulators can isolate failing projects without rescuing solvent firms. |
What authorities and industry leaders say
The Bank of England’s assessment provides an important qualification to the crisis scenario. It said AI development had largely been financed with cash and equity up to its December 2025 report, which limited the likelihood of severe near-term systemic consequences. It nevertheless warned that deeper AI-credit links could increase lending losses after a sharp valuation correction.

The Associated Press reported in October 2025 that the Bank of England believed the risk of a sharp correction had increased. IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said such a correction could tighten financial conditions and drag down world growth. The same AP report quoted Jeff Bezos describing the boom as an industrial rather than a financial or banking bubble: weaker projects could fail while useful inventions remain. Sam Altman was quoted as expecting short-term periods of both overinvestment and underinvestment, followed by long-run economic growth.
What would have to happen for a banking crisis
An AI sell-off alone would not recreate 2008. A banking crisis would require a chain in which losses are large, leveraged and concentrated enough to impair lenders or freeze funding. Warning signs would include widespread defaults on AI-related loans, falling collateral values for data centers and specialized equipment, large undisclosed exposures at banks or private-credit vehicles, and refinancing failures occurring at the same time.

By contrast, a market correction could remain contained if most projects are equity-funded, lenders have conservative underwriting, contracts can be renegotiated and demand shifts to cheaper or more efficient systems. Useful infrastructure could also retain value for other computing workloads, limiting recoverable losses even when individual AI companies fail.

- Treat Marcus’s 2008 comparison as a conditional stress scenario, not a prediction of a scheduled crash.
- Separate reported spending figures from forecasts: the $5 trillion five-year infrastructure estimate comes from the Bank of England’s 2025 report; the $1 trillion 2027 capital-expenditure projection comes from Bloomberg data cited by Kiplinger in 2026; and the $1 billion model and $60 billion data-center figures were attributed to Jensen Huang by Kiplinger.
- Watch financing composition, not just headline valuations. A shift from cash and equity toward debt, private credit or securitized leases would increase the channel from an AI correction to lenders.
- Check whether AI revenue growth, pricing and reliability are keeping pace with fixed commitments for chips, energy and facilities.
The evidence supports a credible financial-stability risk that could grow as debt and contractual links deepen. It does not establish that an AI collapse will produce a 2008-scale banking failure. The eventual impact would depend on leverage, who holds the exposures, how transparent the financing is and whether the technology generates enough cash to support the infrastructure built for it.
