Use AI to get oriented, organise information, or create a first draft. Do your own research when you need current, authoritative facts, original evidence, or a decision that carries real consequences. For important claims, treat AI’s references as leads: open the sources and check what they actually say.
What AI is useful for—and what it cannot establish
Generative AI can help you brainstorm, summarise text you provide, draft wording, generate questions, or explain a difficult subject in plainer language. These are support tasks: they can help you decide what to look into or make material easier to work with.

AI output is not an authoritative source. A fluent, confident response can still be wrong, incomplete, outdated, biased, or backed by a citation that does not support the claim. The House of Commons Library puts the distinction plainly: “AI should be treated as an assistant, not an authority.” OpenAI’s product guidance similarly says, “Use ChatGPT as a first draft, not a final source.”

When to use AI, research, or both

There is no universal winner on speed or accuracy. The result depends on the tool, the task, your subject knowledge, the quality of available sources, and the cost of an error. For formal evidence synthesis, Cochrane’s 2026 guidance recommends assessing whether a tool fits the task and using mitigations such as human verification or validation.
How to check an AI answer before using it
- Define what a good answer needs to contain. Identify the question, the decision it will inform, and any requirements for freshness, evidence, or precision.
- Give AI a bounded task. Ask for an outline, a plain-language explanation, a summary of text you provide, or questions that would help guide further research. Avoid treating an open-ended answer as a final finding.
- Break the response into checkable claims. Flag dates, numbers, quotations, technical statements, and references. Verify the individual claims that matter, not just the overall impression.
- Open important references. Confirm that each source exists, is appropriate and current enough for the claim, and actually supports the statement attributed to it. A citation is a lead to inspect, not proof that the summary is faithful.
- Seek independent confirmation when the stakes warrant it. Check consequential, surprising, or disputed claims against another reliable source, and involve a subject expert where appropriate.
- Edit and take responsibility. Restore relevant context, note uncertainty, and disclose AI use if the applicable rules require it.
This approach follows the House of Commons Library’s practical sequence: define the task, use AI, check factual claims against reputable sources, seek expertise, then edit and take responsibility. Cochrane adds explicit tool assessment and human oversight for evidence-synthesis work.

What changes the level of checking?
How much harm an error could cause
The more a decision could affect someone’s health, finances, rights, safety, or work, the less appropriate it is to rely on an unchecked AI response. Use authoritative material and qualified human judgement where needed. In formal evidence work, assess the tool’s purpose, relevant training, testing or validation data, performance in context, user capability, and transparency or documentation.

A system without current search may not know about developments after its training cutoff. A search-enabled tool may retrieve newer material, but retrieval does not make the material reliable or the summary accurate. Check the source date and read the relevant passage yourself.

How well you know the subject
Prior knowledge helps you catch omissions, distorted summaries, and claims that need more context. If you cannot judge whether an answer is plausible or complete, that is a reason to lean more heavily on trustworthy sources or an expert—not to infer accuracy from confident wording.
What information you are sharing
Before entering personal, confidential, or work-related information, check the specific service’s terms, your organisation’s rules, and applicable privacy requirements. UK Government guidance cautions that public AI services may leave users with limited control over inputs and outputs; protections and terms vary by product. For high-risk decisions, it also stresses lawful, responsible use and meaningful human control.

What one AI-assisted research case study does—and does not—show
A UK Government and Behavioural Insights Team case study published on 23 April 2025 reported that an AI-assisted evidence review took 23% less time overall than the human-only review in that particular exercise. Analysis and synthesis of selected literature took 56% less time in that same case study. These are results from one exercise, not general productivity estimates or independent replications.
The authors cautioned that the result was not generalisable. The AI draft was judged less fluent and needed more revisions; manual checks and edits supplemented the output, and errors required verification. The figures therefore do not establish that AI-assisted research is generally faster or produces higher-quality work.
Extra care with investment information
The Financial Conduct Authority’s guidance is specific to UK consumers and investment research. It says general-purpose AI information from tools such as ChatGPT or Copilot is not regulated financial advice under the UK protections it describes. The FCA’s practical formulation is: “Use AI to guide you where to dig deeper, not as your final answer.” Do not generalise that regulatory statement to other countries or treat an AI response as a substitute for advice suited to your circumstances.
