GST e-invoicing has two separate time limits: from April 1, 2025, the IRIS IRP restricts IRN generation more than 30 days after the document date for taxpayers with aggregate annual turnover (AATO) of ₹10 crore or more; an already generated IRN can generally be cancelled through the IRP only within 24 hours of generation. The first clock concerns reporting, while the second concerns cancellation.
Which time limit applies to reporting an e-invoice?
According to an IRIS IRP release note dated March 31, 2025, effective April 1, 2025, taxpayers with AATO of ₹10 crore and above must report invoices, credit notes and debit notes within 30 days of the document date. The IRP restricts IRN generation after that window.
This is not a universal 30-day deadline for every GST-registered taxpayer: the stated restriction applies to the specified turnover cohort. The release note establishes that operational limit, not additional exceptions or procedures. Confirm whether e-invoicing applies to your business and check current portal guidance before relying on the deadline.
How long do you have to cancel an IRN?
The IRIS IRP FAQ and cancellation help guidance allow cancellation of an eligible IRN within 24 hours of generation. The help workflow covers active IRNs generated within the previous 24 hours. This is a different clock from the 30-day reporting restriction: the 24 hours begin when the IRN is generated, not on the document date.

The IRP does not provide an edit function for submitted invoice details. The FAQ states that an invoice furnished through the portal cannot be amended and can only be cancelled within 24 hours of generation. Cancellation also does not erase the record that the e-invoice was generated, and the cancelled IRN cannot be reused for another invoice. See the IRIS IRP FAQ and cancellation help page.
What to check before cancelling
- Check the 24-hour window. Confirm the IRN is active and was generated within the preceding 24 hours.
- Check for a linked e-way bill. If an active e-way bill is associated with the invoice, cancel it first. An active e-way bill prevents IRN cancellation in this workflow. See the IRIS IRP cancellation help and e-way bill portal.
- Cancel the IRN through the IRP workflow. Use the portal’s cancellation process while the IRN remains eligible; the IRN cannot be edited in place.
What if more than 24 hours have passed?
The IRIS IRP FAQ says cancellation through the IRP is unavailable after 24 hours, and invoice details cannot be amended there. It points to correcting or deleting details in GSTR-1 as required and gives a credit note as an example. This is not late IRP cancellation: the appropriate GST reporting and accounting treatment depends on the transaction and should be determined for that case. Refer to the IRIS IRP FAQ and seek transaction-specific tax advice where needed.

Reporting methods and GSTR-1
The IRIS IRP FAQ describes several routes for reporting invoice data: the government bulk generation tool, direct API, GSP API, and accounting or ERP software. Reported invoice data may auto-populate the supplier’s GSTR-1. Whichever route is used, taxpayers subject to the 30-day restriction should allow time for reporting before the document-date deadline.

Do not confuse the current limit with the 2020 procedure
Notification No. 73/2020-Central Tax described a 30-day special procedure during October 2020. That was a historical measure, not the basis for the current IRP reporting restriction. The current operational restriction discussed here comes from the IRIS IRP release note for the specified ₹10 crore-and-above cohort.
