AI agents can help marketing teams coordinate more work—such as preparing campaigns, analyzing performance and tailoring customer communications—by using data and tools to take steps toward a defined goal. The practical benefit is greater workflow capacity and more opportunities to iterate, not a proven guarantee of higher revenue or lower staffing costs.
What makes a marketing system an agent?
A writing assistant generates text when prompted. An agent can use context and connected tools to work through a task, make decisions within set boundaries and take one or more actions toward a goal. Depending on its permissions, that might mean drafting campaign content, helping build an audience, creating a campaign, reviewing results and proposing or taking a next step.

Marketing products often combine generative AI, predictive models, conventional automation and agent-like functions. The label alone does not tell you what a system can do. Check the actual workflow: what information it can access, what actions it can take, and where a person must approve or intervene. Salesforce’s guide distinguishes generated content and forecasts from systems that make decisions and act; IDC describes agentic systems as having varying levels of autonomy and responsiveness to signals.

The useful meaning of “scale” is that software can help a team coordinate more tasks and iterations without a person manually carrying out every step. Examples described by vendors include:
#1 Best Overall
- Campaign preparation: Google described assistance with onboarding, campaign creation, keyword and creative suggestions, and tailored ad groups. Salesforce described campaign briefs, omnichannel content creation and localization workflows. Google’s announcement and Salesforce’s announcement are product descriptions, not independent assessments of results.
- Analytics and troubleshooting: Google described proactive trend and insight discovery in Analytics, data exploration and help identifying campaign issues. Its Marketing Advisor announcement also described step-by-step guidance across Google properties and websites, including detecting a missing tag and offering to install it with permission.
- Audience and campaign decisions: Salesforce described an agent that can use customer context and live signals to help choose content, channel, audience and timing, then create, execute, test and optimize campaigns within marketer-defined goals, budgets, guardrails and autonomy limits.
- More tailored engagement: Connecting customer information and interactions can support communications tailored to context. The value depends on data quality, integration and appropriate permissions; personalization at scale does not guarantee that a message will suit a customer or lead to a conversion.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
Available examples establish that vendors are building tools for these workflows, but they do not establish a dependable revenue lift or universal labor savings. IDC describes generative and agentic AI in enterprise marketing platforms as being in the early stages. The adoption figures below come from a survey, so they indicate respondents’ expectations and reported experience rather than independently audited outcomes.
| Finding | What it measures |
|---|---|
| 77% expected AI agents to require a fundamental redesign of the marketing department | Expectation among 100 mid-market and enterprise CMOs in the UK and Ireland, surveyed online by Coleman Parkes for Salesforce in April and May 2026. |
| 81% believed agentic AI would shift teams toward higher-value strategic and creative work | Expectation from the same survey; it does not show that the shift had occurred. |
| 13% said agentic AI was fully implemented across their organization | Self-reported implementation in the same sample, not an audited adoption rate. |
| 53% said implementation complexity currently outweighed commercial and operational benefits | Respondents’ assessment in the same survey, not a universal cost-benefit result. |
| 69% agreed hallucination risk made deployment more complex in customer-facing marketing than in back-office functions | Respondents’ perception in the same survey, not a measured hallucination rate. |
These figures are from Salesforce and The Drum’s 2026 survey report. Its sample was limited to 100 mid-market and enterprise CMOs in the UK and Ireland; the results should not be treated as global adoption or proof of business impact.
Google said in a May 21, 2025 announcement that more than half a million advertisers had used the conversational experience in Google Ads to create Search campaigns. That figure concerns the existing conversational experience, not adoption of agents or campaign results attributable to agents. Google’s announcement also described broader agentic capabilities as planned. Its stated rollout timing does not confirm that each feature remains available in October 2026.

Start with a bounded workflow where the desired result can be checked and mistakes are recoverable. Use the following questions to set the boundary before connecting a tool to a live campaign or customer-facing channel:
Rank #3
- Define the goal and success measure. Choose a specific task, such as preparing localized draft content or flagging a tracking issue. Decide what a useful result looks like before judging whether the agent helped.
- Check the data and context. Identify which customer, campaign, product and brand sources the system can use. Confirm the information is sufficiently accurate and current for the decisions involved.
- Limit permissions. Begin with read-only access or recommendations where feasible. Require approval before publication, customer contact, campaign launch or changes to budgets and spend.
- Review outputs and log actions. Assign a person to check consequential recommendations and actions. Keep a record that makes it possible to see what the system did and why.
- Set escalation rules. Specify what should stop the workflow and route it to a person—for example, missing data, an unexpected change or content that requires judgment.
- Expand only after the workflow is reliable. Increase autonomy gradually when the system consistently meets the agreed checks and the team can monitor it.
These controls matter most when an action is public, costly or hard to reverse. Salesforce describes marketer-set goals, budgets and autonomy limits in its product announcement; its June 2026 page also said some features were in development or unreleased.

Compare the actual operating boundaries and workflow coverage, not just whether a product uses the word “agent.”
Rank #4
- Autonomy and approvals: Can it advise or draft only, or can it alter settings, launch campaigns, change spend or contact customers? Which actions require approval?
- Data access: Which customer, campaign, product and brand sources can it read, and how current and dependable are they?
- Workflow coverage: Does it connect advertising, analytics, CRM, content and campaign systems the team uses, or work only within one platform?
- Safety and oversight: Are permissions, guardrails, human review, action logs and escalation paths available and clear?
- Maturity and evidence: Is the capability generally available, in a pilot or only announced? What measured outcomes are available beyond the vendor’s product description?
Availability can change, so verify the current status before making a decision. Salesforce’s June 3, 2026 announcement described Agentforce Content Agent and Marketing Goals Agent as pilots, while campaign management in Slack using MCP was described as generally available that month. The same page cautioned that some referenced capabilities were still in development or unreleased. Check Salesforce’s announcement for the stated context and confirm current availability with the provider.
