Wi-SUN FAN: A Practical Guide to Planning Outdoor IoT Mesh Networks

Wi-SUN FAN supports large outdoor IoT networks, but planning requires more than compatible radios. Understand certification, regional bands, mesh resilience and FAN 1.0-to-1.1 migration.

Wi-SUN FAN is a standards-based IPv6 wireless mesh profile for large outdoor IoT networks, including utility meters, distribution equipment, streetlights and EV chargers. A successful deployment depends on choosing the right profile and regional frequency band, confirming product certification, and designing the surrounding network and operations—not simply buying compatible radios.

What Wi-SUN FAN is designed to connect

A Field Area Network (FAN) provides communications infrastructure across geographically large outdoor networks. Wi-SUN Alliance lists advanced metering and distribution automation among its uses, as well as electricity, water and gas meters; distribution switches and substations; streetlights, parking meters and traffic lights; and EV charging stations.

Wi-SUN describes its smart utility networks as interoperable, multi-service IPv6 communications over an IEEE 802.15.4-SUN-based wireless mesh. In practical terms, devices exchange data and commands through a network in which some devices can relay traffic toward collection points. It is intended for infrastructure deployments rather than a general-purpose indoor home network.

How the mesh handles a disconnected node

In a mesh, a device can pass traffic onward instead of requiring every endpoint to communicate directly with one central point. Wi-SUN Alliance says nodes can reconnect through nearby devices or collection nodes if a node or collection point disconnects or loses power. That is a resilience design property, not a promise that a particular network will remain available through every outage: actual recovery depends on the deployment, its routing and coverage, and which devices remain reachable.

What to decide before specifying equipment

Start with the service the network must support and the sites it must cover. Then map those needs to the profile, band, device roles and operating model. Certification is a useful interoperability check, but it does not replace project-specific system design.

  1. Define endpoints and traffic. List the device types, their data and command needs, and whether each device is expected to be mains-powered or battery-operated.
  2. Choose the applicable Wi-SUN profile. For the outdoor utility and smart-city applications described here, FAN is generally the relevant profile. Wi-SUN Alliance has other profiles for different use cases, so do not treat Wi-SUN certification as one interchangeable label.
  3. Identify the deployment jurisdiction and band. Match the country’s applicable rules to the radio band supported by the specific product and its certification.
  4. Check the exact product and certification level. Use the Alliance’s current certified-products list and verify the product, profile, frequency band, and whether the listing is for profile certification or PHY certification.
  5. Plan the whole operating system. Work with suppliers to define credentials and security provisioning, routers and border routers, backhaul, network operations, monitoring, and lifecycle support. There is no universal bill of materials that fits every deployment.
  6. Validate integration with the network you intend to operate. Confirm the intended cross-vendor operation and compatibility with any existing network rather than relying on a broad claim that two products are Wi-SUN-capable.

Certification: what it verifies and what it does not

Wi-SUN Alliance says products are tested by independent authorized laboratories for conformance to relevant protocol standards and interoperability with other certified equipment implementing the same profile in the same frequency band. Its certified-products information distinguishes profile certification, which includes upper layers as well as the physical layer (PHY), from PHY certification, which covers the physical layer. The Alliance FAQ says FAN Profile Certification requires PHY certification for FAN data-rate modes.

For procurement, check the current listing for the specific product and certification level. A PHY certification alone is not the same as certification of the full profile. Also verify that the certified band matches the market and that local regulatory requirements are met. Certification addresses conformance and interoperability within its stated scope; it does not establish coverage, capacity, availability, battery life or suitability for your particular site.

Frequency bands depend on region and product

Wi-SUN Alliance’s FAQ summarizes regional frequency ranges, but a summary is not a substitute for checking the rules in the country where equipment will operate. The specific product’s supported band and certification must also match. The Alliance’s listed regional ranges are:

The FAQ separately lists additional FAN 1.1 ranges of 863–876 MHz, 865–868 MHz and 920–928 MHz; it does not map each of those ranges to a specific country in that summary. Treat all these figures as Alliance guidance, then verify the applicable regulatory references and certified product details for the exact jurisdiction and deployment.

When a FAN 1.0 network needs FAN 1.1

Wi-SUN Alliance describes FAN 1.1 as compatible with existing FAN 1.0 networks. Its FAQ frames an upgrade as targeted: add FAN 1.1-certified routers and border routers where the newer capabilities or newly supported bands are needed. An existing FAN 1.0 implementation that still meets its requirements does not need to be upgraded merely because FAN 1.1 exists.

Reasons to consider a targeted upgrade

  • The deployment needs capabilities introduced in FAN 1.1, such as higher performance or lower-power operation.
  • The project needs a band supported by FAN 1.1 that its current implementation does not support, subject to local regulation and product certification.
  • The network plan can use FAN 1.1-certified routers or border routers in the locations where those capabilities are needed.

Performance and battery figures are capabilities, not guarantees

The Wi-SUN Alliance FAQ, accessed October 7, 2026, states link speeds of up to 2.4 Mbps. That is a profile capability, not a promise of delivered application throughput at every site. The Alliance’s FAN 1.1 page, also accessed October 7, 2026, describes low-power field-sensing devices intended for battery operation of ten years or more. This is a use-case statement, not a universal battery-life warranty; the lifetime of a particular device depends on its implementation and operating conditions.

What the 2026 standards announcement means

On July 7, 2026, Wi-SUN Alliance announced that the FAN specification had been formally ratified as ISO/IEC/IEEE 32857:2026. The Alliance said the designation gives utilities and municipalities an internationally recognized framework for procurement. The announcement’s quoted characterization came from Phil Beecher, the Alliance’s president and CEO: “When a specification carries ISO/IEC recognition, it signals to procurement officials, regulators and policymakers around the world that the technology has been vetted at the highest level.”

For a tender or formal standards interpretation, verify the publication and status directly with ISO, IEC or IEEE. The Alliance announcement is evidence of what the Alliance reported on that date; it is not itself an independent standards-body record.

How to read Wi-SUN deployment figures

Wi-SUN Alliance’s Smart Utilities page attributes a figure of more than 96.5 million Wi-SUN-capable devices awarded worldwide to Navigant Research, but the page gives no publication year for the statistic. The same page describes 66 million electricity meters in Japan by 2020 as a past forecast, without stating the originating publication year. Neither figure should be presented as a current 2026 installed-base count or as an independently audited deployment total.
