Electrocatalyst-in-a-box (ECaB) converts nitrate in wastewater into recoverable ammonia by linking three steps: it separates nitrate into a controlled electrolyte, reduces it electrochemically, then captures the ammonia in an acid solution. The 2024 work demonstrated the process in laboratory research, not at a full-scale wastewater plant.
How does electrocatalyst-in-a-box work?
ECaB is a reactive-separation process, not a catalyst placed directly into untreated wastewater. Its design moves nitrate away from the wastewater first, so the electrochemical conversion can take place in a smaller, engineered stream. The 2024 study by Dean M. Miller and co-authors in Energy & Environmental Science connects extraction, conversion, and product recovery in one process.

1. Donnan dialysis extracts nitrate
An anion-exchange membrane separates wastewater from a receiver electrolyte. An electrochemical-potential gradient drives nitrate across the membrane into the receiver while chloride moves in the opposite direction. When the receiver volume is smaller than the wastewater feed, this step can concentrate nitrate relative to the feed.
The receiver is designed to be conductive and to exclude magnesium, which can interfere with the catalyst. This is a separation strategy for the studied configuration; it does not mean every wastewater mixture will behave identically.

2. A molecular catalyst reduces nitrate to ammonia
The extracted nitrate enters an electrochemical cell containing Co(DIM), a homogeneous molecular catalyst. An applied potential drives nitrate reduction to ammonia. By isolating the reaction stream from much of the wastewater matrix, the process limits direct exposure of the catalyst to contaminants.
3. A membrane and acid trap recover ammonia
Ammonia passes through a gas-permeable membrane into an acidic trap. There it is retained and recovered as ammonium sulfate. The reported product is purified ammonium sulfate; the study does not establish that it has been approved for use as fertilizer or demonstrate its field performance.

What did the 2024 study find?
The peer-reviewed proof-of-concept study reported 90.0 ± 2.7 kWh per kilogram of nitrogen (kWh kg N−1) for purified ammonia produced from wastewater-derived nitrate. That figure belongs to the study’s experimental process and system boundary; it is not a universal energy requirement for nitrate recovery or a directly comparable figure for another ammonia-production route unless the accounting boundaries match.

The authors also reported that engineering ECaB’s sub-processes increased the ammonia production rate by 20.4×. This is the improvement reported in the study abstract, not a claim that the system produces ammonia at a particular commercial throughput.

The work demonstrated treatment of real municipal wastewater, recovery of purified ammonium sulfate, and reuse of homogeneous catalysts. The paper described its energy result as the lowest reported at publication among the compared nitrate-reduction reactive-separation processes. That is a comparison made by the authors in the 2024 paper, not an unqualified claim about the current global state of the art.
Why does wastewater composition matter?
Wastewater is not a clean nitrate solution. In the study’s investigation of the catalyst, magnesium-related mechanisms in real wastewater reduced nitrate-conversion activity by 62.0%. That finding helps explain why the design separates nitrate into a controlled receiver electrolyte before electrolysis. It is a result for the studied wastewater and conditions, not a prediction that every feed will cause the same loss.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Feed composition therefore matters to both process design and performance. The extraction step is part of ECaB’s solution to contaminant exposure, but the study does not establish identical separation efficiency, catalyst activity, or energy use across all wastewater sources.

What does later continuous-system work show?
A 2024 American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) proceedings abstract describes a follow-on benchtop continuous ECaB system. It reports optimization of flow conditions, process modeling, and validation in a continuous bench experiment using real fertilizer runoff as the intended process case. This extends the engineering work beyond a purely batch-style demonstration, but it is not evidence of a full-scale or long-duration field installation.

Reported flow and electrochemical results
Under an optimized flow condition, the proceedings abstract reports an ammonia partial current density of about 200 mA cm−2 at −0.53 VRHE. This is a follow-on benchtop result, not the headline performance measure from the 2024 journal paper.
The abstract also reports that at a low linear flow rate of 32 cm s−1, solution-phase transport limitations accounted for 42% of the observed Donnan dialysis extraction rate. It says the limitation was overcome at 170 cm s−1. These are conditions reported for that continuous-system study, not general operating recommendations for wastewater treatment.
Is ECaB ready for use?
No evidence in these publications establishes commercial deployment or a full-scale wastewater plant. Stanford’s technology profile labels ECaB “Proof of Concept” and lists wastewater treatment, ammonia production from aqueous nitrate feedstocks, and decentralized fertilizer production as potential applications. Its described setup includes two reactor cells and four recirculating electrolyte reservoirs, illustrating that ECaB is a multi-unit research process rather than a consumer appliance.

Likewise, the AIChE abstract’s benchtop continuous experiment does not establish commercial economics, long-term reliability, or environmental superiority at scale.
What remains to be established?
The published results are promising process research, but judging practical readiness requires evidence beyond a proof of concept and a benchtop continuous test. Relevant questions include how performance changes with different wastewater compositions, whether membranes and catalysts remain effective over extended operation, and how energy use, product quality, and operating costs compare at a larger scale. The cited work does not provide a complete, apples-to-apples comparison with other ammonia recovery systems across those measures.
