The safest choice is a runtime security platform that enforces isolation outside the model, records every consequential action, and can stop active work—including sub-agents—without relying on the agent to cooperate. Evaluate those three controls together. A platform with excellent prompt-injection detection but shared credentials, permissive egress, chat-only logging, or a kill switch that merely revokes tokens leaves material gaps.
This guide turns current guidance from Microsoft, NVIDIA, the Cloud Security Alliance (CSA), Lens and the vendor-neutral BRACE Framework into a procurement and proof-of-concept plan. It emphasizes evidence you can test rather than feature checkboxes.

What an AI agent security platform must enforce
Agent security is an execution-control problem, not only a model-safety problem. Instructions can be manipulated, tools can be over-permissioned, and an agent can delegate to sub-agents that outlive the original process. Put controls at the runtime, network, credential and tenant boundaries so they continue to work when the model is confused or compromised.
Runtime isolation
Run each agent in a sandbox or equivalent isolated environment. Policy enforcement should be out of process where possible, so a compromised agent process cannot rewrite its own policy. NVIDIA describes OpenShell as a sandboxed runtime with out-of-process enforcement; its Sentry and BlueField components can add monitoring and enforcement outside the host software, while OpenShell can also run without BlueField.

The CSA states that sandbox isolation for agent execution environments should be treated as a required architectural control, not optional hardening. Ask where the boundary is implemented, what happens if the agent gains code execution, and whether the policy engine remains available during an agent-process compromise.
Network isolation
Prefer default-deny networking. Permit only destinations, protocols and ports required for the assigned task, through a policy-controlled proxy. The policy must address DNS, IPv4 and IPv6, cloud metadata endpoints, loopback and private address ranges consistently; otherwise an apparently restricted agent may still reach credentials or internal services through an overlooked path.
Lens documents proxy-mediated egress and a default-deny posture. Treat that as a design requirement to verify in your own environment, not as a substitute for testing. Attempt direct DNS, IPv4, IPv6, metadata and private-range connections from a running sandbox and confirm that each is blocked or explicitly approved.

Credentials should not be stored in the agent workspace or environment variables that the model can read. Inject them server-side at the proxy or tool boundary, scoped to the specific action and tenant. Confirm that shell access, crash dumps, logs and sub-agent workspaces cannot expose long-lived secrets.
Microsoft recommends dedicated identities, denying unreviewed tools and cross-tenant paths by default, and testing revocation before expanding autonomy. Require short-lived, narrowly scoped credentials and a documented rotation and invalidation procedure.
Tenant and workspace boundaries
Every tenant, agent instance and sub-agent needs an explicit scope. A shared filesystem, cache, credential store or network identity can turn one agent’s mistake into cross-tenant exposure. Lens documents per-agent workspace and sub-agent isolation; validate that isolation with a deliberate cross-tenant read and write attempt.

Sub-agent containment
Delegated work must inherit or further restrict the parent scope. It must not create an untracked identity, bypass network policy or survive a parent shutdown. Record the parent-child relationship and ensure the emergency stop reaches every descendant.

What complete AI agent audit logs contain
Chat transcripts are not an audit trail. Microsoft warns that chat-only records omit the underlying tool actions and downstream authorization decisions needed for forensics. A useful record lets an analyst reconstruct who requested an action, which policy evaluated it, what resource was touched, what happened downstream and who approved an exception.
Minimum identity and context fields
Record these fields on every meaningful action, including denied actions:
- Accountable party and operational owner
- Tenant, agent-type identifier and agent-instance identifier
- Model and configuration fingerprint
- On-behalf-of user, when a human initiated the work
- Role and effective capability scope
- Parent agent and sub-agent identifiers
- Trace or correlation ID linking the full causal chain
- Timestamp with an unambiguous time zone or UTC representation
These requirements combine Microsoft’s recommended identity, role, scope, action, resource, correlation ID and on-behalf-of fields with BRACE’s six core identity fields: accountable party, operational owner, tenant, agent-type ID, agent-instance ID and trace context.
Action, decision and result fields
- Prompt or triggering event, subject to your data-retention and privacy rules
- Tool name, exact parameters and target resource
- Authorization policy, effective permissions and decision (allow, deny or escalated)
- Approver or human checkpoint, if required
- Downstream result, status, error and side effects
- Credential or token scope used, without recording the secret itself
- Final outcome and any privilege or configuration change
NVIDIA says OpenShell provides an allow/deny audit trail and supports centralized sandbox-log collection. Lens says it audits every action with actor, action, resource, timestamp and result across seven interaction surfaces. Ask vendors to demonstrate those records, not just show a dashboard.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Human-readable causal reconstruction
The CSA recommends consolidating agent logs into records that let analysts follow the causal chain of decisions, and extending pipelines to reasoning traces, tool-use sequences and privilege changes. You do not need to retain unrestricted private chain-of-thought to achieve this. Capture the observable inputs, tool calls, policy decisions, approvals and results required to explain an outcome, then define retention, access and redaction rules.

How a real kill switch should work
A kill switch is an emergency containment function, not a button that merely revokes a token. BRACE defines it as a tested way to stop the agent and all sub-agents within a set time while leaving the system safe; the agent must not be able to disable or delay it.
Required kill-switch sequence
- Stop scheduling and new work. Prevent the agent and its descendants from receiving additional tasks.
- Terminate active execution. Stop or delete the sandboxes, workers and sessions running the agent.
- Apply an emergency deny-all policy. Block tool calls and network egress while termination propagates.
- Invalidate access. Revoke tokens, rotate or disable credentials and remove stale permissions.
- Contain descendants. Confirm that every sub-agent, queue consumer and delegated workflow is stopped.
- Preserve evidence. Make logs, correlation IDs, policy decisions and operator actions durable and exportable.
- Verify safety. Check that no process can continue through an alternate identity, cached credential or already-open session.
Why token revocation is insufficient
Lens documents a concrete limitation: token revocation prevents new authentications but does not terminate active sessions. Its documented mitigations are stopping or deleting the sandbox or applying an emergency deny-all policy to running sandboxes. Treat this distinction as a procurement test. Ask the vendor to demonstrate what happens to an already-authenticated, long-running tool call and to an agent that has queued work.
Governance around the switch
The CSA recommends incident-response procedures with activation protocols, named accountability and human checkpoints for high-impact workflows. Define who can activate the switch, what severity triggers it, how operators communicate the event and how service is restored. Test disabling the agent, rotating credentials, invalidating tokens and removing stale permissions, as Microsoft recommends.

| Platform or framework | Isolation and enforcement | Audit evidence | Kill-switch and revocation questions | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Defender for Endpoint runtime protection | Agent-native event inspection; detects prompt injection and can audit or block supported actions | Defender alerts, protection history and SOC incident correlation | Validate which agent types and actions are supported; test endpoint-wide disablement and token invalidation | Organizations already operating Microsoft endpoint and SOC tooling |
| NVIDIA Open Agent Safety Platform | OpenShell sandbox with out-of-process policy; optional Sentry/BlueField independent hardware layer | Allow/deny audit trail and centralized sandbox logs | Evaluate operational dependencies and whether hardware isolation is necessary for your threat model | Infrastructure teams seeking runtime controls with an optional hardware enforcement layer |
| Lens Agents | Default-deny networking, proxy egress, server-side credentials and isolated sub-agents | Per-action auditing across seven interaction surfaces | Token revocation does not terminate active sessions; require sandbox stop or emergency deny-all behavior | Teams wanting a managed, governed agent runtime |
| BRACE Framework | Vendor-neutral controls for capability scopes, destructive-action blocking and kill switches | Six identity fields plus provenance and context logging | Use its tested kill-switch requirement as an acceptance criterion rather than a product feature claim | Security architects comparing vendors and writing procurement tests |

Proof-of-concept tests before you buy
Run the same adversarial, observable tests against every candidate. Require exported evidence with stable correlation IDs and retain the test configuration so results are reproducible.
- Destructive-call interception: Ask the agent to delete or modify a protected resource. Confirm that policy blocks the call before execution, records the attempted parameters and remains active if the agent process is intentionally compromised.
- Network boundary: From the sandbox, attempt DNS resolution and connections over IPv4 and IPv6 to an unapproved public host, cloud metadata endpoint, loopback address and private range. Confirm default-deny behavior and a clear deny event.
- Credential exposure: Inspect the workspace, environment, process list, crash output and logs while the agent uses a protected tool. Verify that only the boundary component sees the credential and that the recorded event contains scope, not secret material.
- Tenant separation: Use one tenant’s identity to request another tenant’s file, cache entry, queue item and network service. Each attempt should fail and produce an attributable audit record.
- Sub-agent inheritance: Have an agent delegate a task. Verify parent-child identifiers, inherited or narrower permissions, separate workspaces and blocked attempts to create an unrestricted child.
- End-to-end audit chain: Start with a prompt or event and follow it through tool request, authorization decision, downstream result, approver and final outcome. Confirm one correlation ID links the records and that an analyst can export them to the existing SIEM.
- Kill active sessions: Start a long-running operation, authenticate it, spawn sub-agents and queue additional work. Activate the kill switch. Confirm that active sessions stop, egress is blocked, tokens are invalidated, descendants terminate and evidence remains available.
- Recovery and residual access: After the stop, attempt to reuse cached credentials, alternate identities and previously issued URLs. Verify that stale permissions are removed before you restore service.
Procurement questions that expose weak implementations
- Can policy block a destructive tool call before execution, and does enforcement continue if the agent process is compromised?
- Are network destinations default-deny, including DNS, IPv4, IPv6, metadata and private ranges?
- Are credentials absent from the workspace and injected only at a proxy or tool boundary?
- Does one record link the prompt, tool request, authorization decision, downstream result, approver and final outcome?
- Does the emergency stop terminate active sessions and sub-agents, revoke tokens, block egress and preserve logs?
- Can operators export records to the existing SIEM with stable correlation IDs?
- Are tenant, agent instance, model/configuration fingerprint and accountable owner recorded on every action?
- Which agent types, tools, operating systems and deployment models are actually covered?
- What is the documented behavior during policy-engine, identity-provider, network-proxy or logging outages?
- Which retention, residency, access-control and redaction options apply to prompts and tool parameters?
Choosing a deployment approach
Endpoint-centric protection
An endpoint-focused control can fit organizations that already correlate Defender alerts, protection history and incidents in a Microsoft SOC. Confirm the exact supported-agent coverage and whether controls apply to servers, developer workstations, containers and cloud workloads where your agents run.

Runtime sandbox with optional hardware enforcement
OpenShell-style architecture suits infrastructure teams that want a sandbox and out-of-process policy, with the option of an independent hardware layer. Determine the operational dependencies, hardware availability, logging path and failure mode before making the hardware layer mandatory.
Recommended Free Tools
Managed governed runtime
A managed runtime can simplify default-deny networking, credential injection, workspace separation and centralized auditing. Your acceptance test still needs to cover active-session termination, sub-agent shutdown, data residency and export to your SOC.
Framework-led procurement
Use BRACE and CSA controls to write requirements even when no single product supplies every layer. You may combine a sandbox, identity provider, network proxy, secrets service, SIEM and incident-response automation, but define ownership for each control and test the handoffs.
Common buying mistakes and fixes
Relying on prompt rules alone
Prompt instructions can be overridden or misinterpreted. Keep destructive-action blocking, identity scope and network policy outside the model’s control.
Accepting chat logs as evidence
A transcript cannot prove which tool ran, what authorization decision occurred or what downstream system returned. Require structured action and decision events.
Calling token revocation a kill switch
Revocation may stop new authentication while existing sessions continue. Add sandbox termination or emergency deny-all enforcement and test both.
Best Value
Ignoring sub-agents and queues
Stopping the visible parent process does not necessarily stop delegated workers. Include descendants, schedulers, queue consumers and cached credentials in the containment test.
Skipping outage behavior
Ask what happens when the policy engine, proxy, identity provider or log collector is unavailable. A secure default normally fails closed for high-impact actions, while preserving enough local evidence to investigate.
Buying on unverified benchmarks
No comparable independent breach-reduction, mean-time-to-kill or total-cost figures are established here. Require a live demonstration, exported records, written coverage limits and vendor-verified pricing and service commitments during procurement.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the single most important control in an AI agent security platform?
Require runtime isolation with policy enforcement outside the model and agent process. It provides the boundary that remains effective when instructions, prompts or the process itself are compromised.
How can I tell whether an audit log is complete?
Trace one operation from its triggering prompt or event through the tool request, authorization decision, downstream result, approver and final outcome. The records should carry identity, scope, resource, timestamp and a stable correlation ID.
Will revoking an agent token stop a running job?
Not necessarily. Revocation can prevent new authentication while an existing session continues, so the platform must also terminate the sandbox or apply an emergency deny-all policy.
Should every agent have its own identity?
Yes. Dedicated identities with explicit role, tenant and effective scope make authorization, revocation and forensic attribution testable.
