Their public statements do not establish that either company chose cute personalities to manipulate users or make them trust agents. What the evidence does show is that tone is a deliberate product-design choice—and that tuning a personality can affect an AI’s behavior in unexpected ways.
What “personality” means in an AI assistant
In ChatGPT, personality refers to communication style, not a separate capability. OpenAI’s Help Center defines it as “the style and tone ChatGPT uses when responding to you.” The company says changing personality does not change what ChatGPT can do or the safety rules it follows. The task and context can also take precedence over a selected style.

That makes personality more than an avatar or a cute name: it can shape how responses sound, even when it is not meant to change what the system can do. OpenAI’s January 22, 2026 release notes say GPT-5.2 Instant’s default personality was made more conversational and better at adapting tone to context, with controls for style, warmth and emoji use retained. This shows conversational feel is an intentional design dimension, but does not explain a strategy involving cute agents.

Why Meta says personal agents need to be useful and trusted
Meta’s stated ambition is for each person to have a personal agent that understands their goals and works on their behalf across areas of life. In an August 2026 statement, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said people would not adopt agents if they did not trust them with sensitive details and tasks, or if the agents acted against their interests.

That is a stated rationale for usefulness, trust and alignment—not a claim that cuteness creates trust. Meta’s statement does not say that a friendly persona is its chosen way to earn confidence, nor does it establish that a particular personality will make people more willing to delegate tasks.
What OpenAI’s “goblin” episode reveals about personality tuning
OpenAI’s April 29, 2026 post, “Where the goblins came from,” describes an unintended effect of training for its Nerdy personality. The company traced recurring goblin and gremlin metaphors to a reward signal that favored creature metaphors in some outputs, with the pattern spreading beyond the selected personality through training-data reuse. OpenAI said it removed the relevant reward signal and filtered some training data. It also said Nerdy was retired in March 2026.

OpenAI reported that use of “goblin” in ChatGPT rose 175% and “gremlin” rose 52% after the GPT-5.1 launch. In its analysis, the Nerdy personality accounted for 2.5% of ChatGPT responses but 66.7% of goblin mentions; an audit found the Nerdy reward showed a tendency to score outputs containing “goblin” or “gremlin” higher in 76.2% of datasets. These are figures from OpenAI’s internal analysis of a word-pattern issue, not independent measurements of user behavior, agent adoption or popularity.
The episode is a concrete reason to treat personality as a behavioral design choice with possible side effects, rather than decoration alone. It does not show that OpenAI intended to make agents cute.

What OpenAI’s Dots say about proactive agents
The Associated Press reported on September 29, 2026 that OpenAI introduced Dots, agents designed to take on ongoing tasks proactively. AP quoted CEO Sam Altman describing them as an “AI helper that always has your back,” inspired by “the cool versions of what we all watched in movies growing up.” AP also reported that Altman said OpenAI was investing more in agent safety, security and monitoring. The quotation is Altman’s description as reported by AP, not an official transcript.
The example helps explain why an agent might be presented as a familiar, approachable helper: it is expected to take initiative, not only answer a question on demand. But that is an interpretation of the product framing, not proof that OpenAI selected a cute persona to increase usage, trust or willingness to hand over tasks.

What the evidence does—and does not—support
- Supported: OpenAI uses personality settings to shape communication style and has deliberately adjusted conversational tone.
- Supported: Meta says personal agents need to understand users’ goals, act on their behalf and earn trust.
- Supported: OpenAI’s own account shows that personality-related training can produce stylistic patterns that spread beyond the intended context.
- Not established: That either company chose cute styling to exploit anthropomorphism, create emotional dependence, make people overlook risk, increase retention or boost adoption.
- Not established: That a cute style itself makes users trust an agent or delegate more tasks.
Meta’s personal-agent vision and OpenAI’s Dots are also not comparable enough, on the available public details, to rank their actual capabilities. A meaningful comparison would need specifics about the tasks each can perform, how proactively it acts, what context or data it can access, what controls users have and what safety measures apply.
