AI Agent Memory for Negative Search Results: How to Remember What Isn’t There

AI agents should store a negative search as a scoped, reproducible claim—not as a timeless note saying that something does not exist. The record must preserve the exact query, search scope, retrieval settings, repository revision and coverage, then recheck only content added since that record was created. That design prevents needless repeated searches while still allowing a later change to disprove the original absence.

Why “nothing found” is a real result

Most agent-memory systems are designed around discoveries that point to an artifact: a file, function, configuration key, decision or known bug. Those memories have a natural anchor. The agent can revisit the named object, compare its revision and decide whether the memory is stale.

Exhaustive searches that return no match are different. They may consume more time than a successful lookup, especially when an agent has to inspect several directories, naming conventions, generated files and documentation. Yet the result is often discarded. At the next session, the agent pays the same cost and may repeat the same search with less coverage.

Swapnanil Saha’s essay, published on 29 August 2026, states the problem directly: “Every memory system stores what an agent found.” The missing category is what the agent established after looking carefully and finding no qualifying artifact. A negative result is useful because it changes the next action: instead of searching indefinitely for a retry setting, the agent can explain that no such setting was found within the recorded scope and suggest the nearest supported mechanism.

The result must not be phrased as an unconditional fact about a repository. “There is no retry config” is too broad. A defensible statement is closer to: “A case-sensitive lexical search for these terms, excluding generated directories, found no matching configuration in revision X.” That wording records what was actually established and leaves room for a later change.

An absence is scoped, not absolute

The central distinction is captured by Saha’s formulation: “An absence is a claim about a search, not about the world.” The claim has boundaries. Change the terms, search method, index, chunking or scope and you have performed a different search, even if the result is also empty.

Memory type What it records Natural freshness check What can invalidate it
Presence A named file, symbol, value or decision exists Inspect the referenced artifact and its revision The artifact changes, moves or is removed
Absence A specified query returned no qualifying result within a defined scope Repeat the same query and settings against newly added content New content that satisfies the query, or a deliberate change in search method or scope

Deletions and unrelated edits do not create a match that was previously absent. Additions do. In a line-oriented implementation, a new file, newly added line or newly indexed chunk is the important unit. A system that tracks only file creation can miss a matching line appended to an existing file, so “additions” should mean newly introduced searchable content, not merely new paths.

What an absence memory must contain

A useful record is closer to a search receipt than a sentence in a notebook. It should let another process reproduce the original operation or explain exactly why reproduction is no longer possible.

Verbatim query

Store every term, regular expression, filter and operator exactly as submitted. Preserve spelling, punctuation and ordering where the search engine treats them as meaningful. If the agent searched for several names such as retry, backoff and max_attempts, retain the complete expression rather than a paraphrase such as “look for retry settings.”

Scope and exclusions

Record the repository, branch or workspace, revision identifier, path roots, file types and excluded directories. “The codebase” is not a reproducible scope if vendored dependencies, generated output or documentation were omitted. Include whether hidden files, submodules and ignored files were searched.

Retrieval configuration

Lexical and semantic retrieval answer different questions. A lexical search depends on tokenization, case sensitivity, stemming and regular-expression behavior. A semantic search depends on the embedding model, model version, index version, distance threshold and chunking strategy. Save those settings, plus any reranking or minimum-score threshold. Re-running with a new embedding model or rebuilt index is a new search, not a faithful freshness check.

Coverage and result semantics

The lower retrieval layer must report whether it actually examined the requested scope. An explicit empty result means that the search completed and found no qualifying item. A list of weak near-matches is not the same thing. If an API always returns its “best” result, even when the score is poor, the agent may incorrectly infer presence or fail to establish absence at all.

Time and revision metadata

Keep the creation time, repository revision or corpus snapshot, index build identifier and the component that performed the search. These fields make a later explanation auditable: the agent can say which snapshot was checked and whether the current index is compatible.

An additions-only freshness algorithm

The most efficient design treats the original query as the anchor. It does not attach the absence to a nonexistent file, and it does not invalidate the note whenever anything in the repository changes.

  1. Run the search to completion. Require the retrieval service to distinguish an explicit empty result from an error, timeout or low-confidence list of near-matches.
  2. Write an immutable search receipt. Store the verbatim query, scope, exclusions, retrieval mode, all relevant parameters, coverage report, revision and timestamp.
  3. Capture the corpus boundary. Record the last revision, index generation or content watermark that the search covered. Without a boundary, the system cannot identify what is new.
  4. Watch for searchable additions. When the repository changes, identify newly added files, added lines, new chunks or newly indexed documents within the original scope.
  5. Run the original operation on those additions. Keep the query and retrieval configuration pinned. For semantic search, use the same model and compatible index generation; otherwise mark the check as a new search.
  6. Update the status. If a qualifying match appears, mark the absence as falsified and attach the new artifact. If no match appears, extend the covered boundary and retain the absence.
  7. Escalate configuration drift. If the scope, query, model, index, chunking or thresholds change, create a new search record instead of silently refreshing the old one.

This invariant avoids a full corpus scan for every memory. A repository can contain millions of unchanged lines; rescanning all of them because an unrelated file was edited creates noise and encourages operators to disable freshness checks.

Why three intuitive fixes fail

Saving the negative as an ordinary note

A note such as “no timeout setting exists” has no artifact anchor. Presence-oriented staleness machinery cannot tell what would disprove it, so the note either lives forever or is discarded on an arbitrary schedule. It can also become self-sealing: once recalled, it suppresses the search that might find a newly introduced setting.

Rerunning whenever the note is recalled

Rechecking sounds safe, but it is not reproducible without the original query and retrieval settings. A later agent may use a different case rule, broader path set, semantic model or score threshold and then treat the result as confirmation. That wastes work while creating false confidence. Recall should return the receipt and its compatibility requirements, not merely a sentence.

Hashing the whole corpus

A whole-repository hash detects any change, but it cannot explain whether the change could create a match. A formatting edit in an unrelated image invalidates the same absence as a new configuration block. The resulting warnings are too coarse; after enough noise, users ignore all of them. Content-addition tracking is more selective and maps directly to the way an absence can be falsified.

Designing the retrieval layer honestly

Memory quality cannot compensate for a retrieval API that hides uncertainty. The search service should expose at least four states: a completed empty result, one or more qualifying matches, only below-threshold near-matches, and an incomplete or failed search. These states should not be collapsed into a single empty list.

Coverage should be explicit. A lexical service can report paths and file classes examined; a vector service can report indexed documents, excluded namespaces and index generation. If an index was stale or only partially built, the agent should store an indeterminate result rather than an absence.

Near-matches deserve their own evidence. A result containing “retryable” when the query was an exact configuration key may be useful context, but it does not prove the key exists. Store the candidate, score and matching passage separately from the binary absence status.

Lexical and semantic searches require different safeguards

Choice Strength Absence risk Record for rechecks
Lexical search Exact, explainable matches and straightforward additions-only checks Misses synonyms, abbreviations and differently formatted names Terms or expression, case and token rules, path filters and parser version
Semantic search Finds conceptually related language and renamed settings Thresholds, embeddings and chunk boundaries can change what “empty” means Model and version, index generation, chunking, distance metric, threshold and reranker

An agent may reasonably run both modes, but it should store two receipts. “No lexical match” and “no semantically similar passage above threshold 0.82” are different findings with different maintenance costs. A model upgrade should trigger a new semantic search rather than silently rewriting the old one.

Worked example: searching for a missing retry setting

Suppose an agent is asked whether a service supports a configurable retry count. It searches source, deployment manifests and operator documentation, excludes generated output, and receives an explicit empty lexical result. The memory should say exactly which terms were used, which paths and revision were covered, and that the retrieval service examined all included files.

On the next commit, a developer adds a new manifest section. The freshness worker extracts the added content and runs the original expression against that addition. If it finds max_retries, the old absence is marked falsified and the new key becomes a presence memory. If the commit only changes comments in an unrelated module, the absence remains valid through the new revision without a full scan.

If the team later wants to know whether the project supports retries under a different name, that is a new semantic or synonym search. It should not overwrite the narrower lexical claim, because the two records answer different questions.

Handling repository changes safely

Renames and moves

A rename usually combines a deletion with an addition. The deleted path cannot create a match, but the newly written content can. Feed the added side of the change to the original query and preserve the old path information for auditability.

Generated and ignored content

Keep exclusions stable. If generated files were excluded originally and later become part of the scope, create a new search record. Otherwise an apparent “fresh” check is comparing different corpora.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Index rebuilds

A rebuilt index may alter chunk boundaries or embeddings even when source text is unchanged. Mark the previous semantic absence as requiring a new search unless the index is demonstrably compatible with the recorded configuration.

Branch and merge behavior

Scope the receipt to a branch, commit lineage or named workspace. A negative result from one branch should not automatically suppress a search on another branch whose additions have not passed through the same freshness pipeline.

Operational safeguards for agents

  • Show the scope and timestamp when recalling an absence; never display it as an unqualified global fact.
  • Expose a “why this is still valid” explanation listing the latest covered revision and additions checked.
  • Provide a one-click option to run a deliberately broader or differently configured search, creating a separate record.
  • Expire or review records when their domain assumptions change, such as a migration from configuration files to environment variables.
  • Keep the original evidence receipt even after falsification so the system can explain when and how the answer changed.
  • Log incomplete searches distinctly from confirmed emptiness, including timeout, permission and indexing failures.

What the essay establishes—and what it does not

Saha’s essay is a structural design argument, not a benchmark. It explicitly says, “No measurement is offered here. The argument is structural.” The interactive demonstrations illustrate the mechanics; they are not evidence of a measured reduction in latency, storage or repeated searches. Implementers should therefore evaluate their own corpus size, change rate, retrieval costs and acceptable staleness rather than quote a universal performance improvement.

The practical conclusion is nevertheless concrete: treat negative search results as first-class memories, anchor them to reproducible queries and scopes, and invalidate them based on content that could actually introduce a match. That combination preserves the value of expensive exhaustive searches without allowing an old “nothing found” note to become permanent or self-protecting.

Implementation checklist

  • Can the retrieval API return a confirmed empty result, separate from errors and weak matches?
  • Is the exact query stored verbatim?
  • Are repository revision, paths, exclusions and corpus boundaries recorded?
  • Are lexical or semantic settings pinned, including model, index and chunking details?
  • Does freshness inspect newly added searchable content rather than every unrelated edit?
  • Does configuration drift create a new search instead of silently refreshing the old claim?
  • Can the agent show users the scope and evidence behind an absence?
