Agentic commerce is shopping software that can move beyond recommendations and take actions on a shopper’s behalf—potentially through checkout. But it is not one universally deployed system: different companies are building distinct protocols and services, and an agent may handle only part of the journey. Whether it can actually place an order depends on the product, retailer, location, and the permissions the shopper grants.
What is agentic commerce?
In ordinary online shopping, software may suggest products while you search, compare, and complete the purchase yourself. In agentic commerce, an AI agent can take some of those steps: find products from a natural-language request, compare options against your preferences, and—in some announced services—help complete a purchase.

The word “agentic” does not mean the AI has unlimited authority or that checkout is automatic. A shopping flow might support discovery and comparison but not payment, or it might require you to approve the proposed order before it is sent to a retailer. Visa describes the consumer-facing pattern as agents browsing and comparing under user-set rules before paying. That description comes from Visa’s explainer for a European audience; it is not a guarantee that every service offers the full sequence.
It is best understood as an emerging category of products and connections between agents, merchants, and payment systems—not a single shared shopping network. The IMF’s April 2026 note characterizes current initiatives as design patterns rather than settled architectures.

How does an AI shopping agent find, compare, and buy?
A shopping agent can participate in several stages, but a particular service may implement only some of them.
- Find: You describe what you need, and the agent retrieves product and retailer information. Google says the merchant data attributes it announced for its commerce work are intended to help agents answer conversational questions, including questions about compatible accessories and substitutes.
- Compare: The agent can assess candidates against preferences you state, such as price, product features, or availability. The ranking method is service-specific. OpenAI says its announced ChatGPT product results are ranked for relevance using factors that include availability, price, quality, whether the result is from a primary seller, and whether Instant Checkout is available.
- Authorize: Before an order is placed, the system needs a way to connect the proposed purchase to your instruction and the limits you have set. In the checkout flow OpenAI described at launch, shoppers confirm each step; its payment tokens are encrypted and scoped to particular merchants and amounts.
- Pay and fulfill: A payment integration passes the order to the merchant. In OpenAI’s described model, the merchant’s system accepts or declines it and handles fulfillment and customer support.
- Get post-purchase help: Google positions UCP as covering post-purchase support as well as discovery and buying. Its announcement does not establish that every participating retailer had every one of those capabilities live.
These are capabilities described by the companies behind the respective services. They should not be assumed to apply to every AI assistant, merchant, or payment flow.
How do the main agentic commerce protocols differ?
The initiatives below address related problems, but they are not one interchangeable standard. The dates and capabilities describe company announcements, not proof that every listed feature is deployed everywhere.

|---|---|---|
| Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), announced by Google on January 11, 2026 | A common language for agents and business systems spanning discovery, buying, and post-purchase support. Google says it is compatible with A2A, AP2, and MCP. Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target, and Walmart co-developed it, and Google named more than 20 endorsing organizations. | The partner and endorsement list is from Google’s announcement and does not mean every partner has implemented every feature. Google described initial checkout on eligible listings in AI Mode and Gemini for eligible U.S. retailers, with expansion planned. |
| Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), announced by OpenAI in September 2025 | An open standard intended to let AI agents, people, and businesses coordinate purchase completion. OpenAI says it co-developed ACP with Stripe and merchant partners. | In OpenAI’s described checkout, the merchant controls its backend, accepts or declines the order, and handles fulfillment and customer support. |
| Visa Trusted Agent Protocol, announced October 14, 2025 | A trust and communication framework developed with Cloudflare. Visa says it uses HTTP Message Signatures to help merchants distinguish approved commerce agents from malicious automation. | It addresses agent trust signaling; it is not, by itself, a retail catalog or a complete checkout platform. |
| Mastercard Agent Pay and related work, discussed January 20, 2026 | Mastercard says its work with Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, Cloudflare, and PayPal seeks shared principles for clear user intent, secure credentials, and verifiable agent identity. | Mastercard said it was working to bring Agent Pay to Microsoft Copilot Checkout. Partnership and rollout details may change. |
The practical distinction is that some work focuses on coordinating commerce from discovery through support, some on completing a purchase, and some on identifying or authenticating an agent. A protocol announcement is not the same as a shopper being able to use every feature at every merchant.
Can AI agents buy things for me?
Some announced services support checkout in limited circumstances, but there is no basis for assuming that any agent can buy any item from any retailer. Google’s January 2026 announcement described initial checkout for eligible U.S. retailer listings in AI Mode and Gemini. Availability depends on eligible products and merchants, and the announcement’s planned expansion is not evidence that a feature is now available in every country or store.
OpenAI’s September 2025 announcement described Instant Checkout for eligible products in ChatGPT, with the shopper confirming each step. That is a description of OpenAI’s announced flow, not a claim about other shopping agents. Before relying on a service, check its current availability for your country, retailer, item, payment method, and account.

How should you compare real AI shopping options?
“AI shopping” can mean a product recommender, a comparison assistant, or a system that can submit an order. Check the boundaries of the specific service rather than inferring capability from its label.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Journey coverage: Does it only surface recommendations, or can it also check out and help after purchase?
- Authorization: Does every order need your explicit confirmation? Can you set a spending cap, merchant or item restriction, time limit, or escalation rule?
- Payment protection: Does the system use a scoped or tokenized credential? What authentication is required, and what happens if a payment or order is disputed?
- Merchant responsibility: Who is named as the seller, and who handles shipping, returns, refunds, and support?
- Availability: Which merchants, products, regions, and payment methods are supported now?
- Interoperability: Is the integration limited to one platform, or is it a protocol intended to connect multiple agents and merchants?
Is it safe to let an AI agent make a purchase?
Safety depends on both the technology and the authority you give it. A system that can search is different from one that can buy; a one-time, confirmed order is different from an open-ended instruction to spend within a budget. Payment authentication and tokenization can reduce some risks, but they do not make an incorrect product choice, delivery problem, or disputed transaction impossible.
OpenAI says its announced launch flow requires shoppers to confirm each step, uses encrypted payment tokens limited to specific merchants and amounts, and shares only necessary order information with permission. Those are OpenAI’s descriptions of its own design and should not be generalized to other agents. Visa says Payment Passkeys can authenticate a user when setting up a new token and provide added reassurance for high-value, unusual, or user-flagged purchases; that explainer is directed at a European audience.

Before enabling purchases, check what the permission actually covers. A useful setup should make it clear whether you authorized search only, adding an item to a cart, a single purchase, a recurring reorder, or spending up to a cap. Look for a way to review the proposed order and see a record of the instruction and actions. If those limits and records are unclear, do not treat the agent as having permission to transact.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who is responsible if an AI agent orders the wrong thing?
Responsibility depends on the transaction, the service’s terms, and applicable law; the protocols described here do not establish one universal rule for every dispute. In the OpenAI checkout model announced in September 2025, the merchant remains responsible for accepting or declining orders, processing payment, fulfillment, and customer support. Google likewise said retailers using its announced eligible checkout remain the seller of record.

That makes the merchant the relevant first contact for an order, delivery, return, or refund in those described flows. It does not answer every question about whether an agent, platform, payment provider, or shopper may bear responsibility in a particular case. Before delegating a purchase, identify the seller of record and check the service’s process for returns, refunds, and payment disputes.

What do current adoption figures actually show?
Available figures here describe company-reported traffic and surveys, not a comparable census of agent-purchased transactions.
- Visa reported a 4,700% increase in AI-driven traffic to U.S. retail websites “over the past year” in its October 14, 2025 Trusted Agent Protocol announcement. The period is relative to that publication date, and the figure is Visa-reported; it is not a current rolling measurement or a count of completed purchases.
- In the same announcement, Visa said 85% of shoppers who had used AI to shop reported that it improved their shopping experience. This applies to the surveyed group described by Visa, not all shoppers.
- Visa’s 2025 survey research across the United States, Australia, and New Zealand found that more than one-third of respondents were more likely to shop with retailers offering agentic purchasing. Visa also reported that in Australia, 59% were familiar with the concept and 44% were likely to use it; over half said they would abandon an agent if its use of their data were unclear. These are Visa-sponsored survey results, not actual purchase rates or a global adoption census.
Those measures suggest interest and growing AI-related retail traffic, but they do not establish how many purchases agents complete. The IMF’s April 2026 description of the field as emerging design patterns is a useful counterweight to launch announcements: the architecture and adoption picture are still developing.
