Convert a 12-hour time to military notation by writing it as four digits: keep the minutes, keep the hour for AM times before noon, and add 12 to PM hours after noon. For example, 8:05 AM is 0805, 5:30 PM is 1730, and noon is 1200. Use the chart below for every hour, and use the date to make midnight unambiguous.
Military time conversion chart
The chart pairs 12-hour time with four-digit military notation and colon-separated 24-hour time. The two 24-hour formats show the same hour; military notation omits the colon and retains a leading zero when needed. Values follow timeanddate.com’s military-time chart and the National Wildfire Coordinating Group conversion sheet.

How to convert AM/PM time to military time
AM times before noon
For 1:00 AM through 11:59 AM, keep the hour and minutes. Write single-digit hours with a leading zero so the result has four digits: 8:05 AM becomes 0805, and 11:45 AM becomes 1145. After midnight, 12:01 AM through 12:59 AM becomes 0001 through 0059.

PM times after noon
For 1:00 PM through 11:59 PM, add 12 to the hour and keep the minutes unchanged. For example, 1:00 PM becomes 1300, 6:25 PM becomes 1825, and 11:59 PM becomes 2359. These rules are also shown in the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation’s 24-hour clock explanation.
Convert military time back to AM/PM
Read the first two digits as the hour and the last two as the minutes. For hours 13 through 23, subtract 12 and use PM: 1825 is 6:25 PM. Hour 00 is the first hour after midnight, so 0030 is 12:30 AM. Hour 12 is noon, so 1200 is 12:00 PM.

Noon, midnight, and the date boundary
Noon is consistently represented as 1200. Midnight needs more care: 0000 identifies the start of a date. Some conventions use 2400 to label the end of that same date, but not every organization or software field accepts both forms. The National Institute of Standards and Technology’s guidance notes that saying only “midnight” can leave unclear whether the beginning or end of a date is meant.
For a schedule, log, or deadline near midnight, include the date and follow the receiving system’s specified convention. If the intended time is the start of a date, use 0000; use 2400 only where the applicable convention permits an end-of-day label. A North Carolina Office of State Fire Marshal worksheet shows both 0000 and 2400 for 12:00 AM, while the NWCG sheet labels midnight 2400; these examples reflect differing conventions, not a universal software rule. See the North Carolina worksheet.

Military notation versus the 24-hour clock
Military notation typically uses four digits without punctuation, such as 1730. The broader 24-hour clock is also commonly written with a colon, as 17:30. Both mean 5:30 PM; use the format requested by the form, schedule, or organization. The Bureau of Reclamation gives examples of both styles, including 1300 and 14:00.
