Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Supernotes suits people who want notecards that sync across desktop, mobile and web, with real-time sharing and publishing, and who can work within the free Starter plan’s 100-card limit. If your priority is dense linking, a large plugin ecosystem, or a document-first workspace, one of the alternatives below may fit better. No independent head-to-head test ranks these apps, so the comparison here relies on each product’s own positioning, plus the questions that actually separate them in daily use.

What Supernotes is and what it costs

Supernotes is a cross-platform note-taking and collaboration app built around notecards. Its help overview lists Mac, Windows, Linux, iOS, Android and the web as supported platforms.

The pricing page states: “All essential features are free.” A Supernotes help article dated August 17, 2024 says the core features are free, that Starter includes sync and publishing, and that the main paid distinction is unlimited cards. Its wording is “All the core features are free, upgrade for unlimited cards.” Both are vendor statements, and the newer pricing page is the one to trust for current figures.

How to compare them

Compare the products on the axes their own descriptions emphasize, in this order:

Rank #3
Maruman Spiral Note Basic Notebook, 160 Pages, A4, 5mm Dot Grid
  • [PREMIUM JAPANESE PAPER] Features 80 sheets (160 pages) of Maruman’s original smooth, acid-free paper that resists ink bleed and supports fountain pens, gel pens, and ballpoints with ease
  • [MICRO-PERFORATED PAGES] Clean, effortless page removal makes this spiral notebook perfect for assignments, memos, to-do lists, or sharing notes without tearing
  • [DURABLE KRAFT COVER] Lightweight yet sturdy textured kraft cover protects your notes while maintaining a simple, minimal aesthetic suited for school, work, or everyday life
  • [LAY-FLAT SPIRAL BINDING] Wire-bound construction allows pages to turn smoothly, fold completely flat, or wrap back neatly in tight workspaces like school desks and cafes
  • [DESIGNED FOR EVERYDAY USE] Rounded ring ends prevent snagging in bags for easy portability, while the versatile A4 size is suitable for study sessions, business meetings, journaling, and creative projects
  1. Note structure and linking. Notecards, backlinks, nested notes, or outline-first organization each produce a different working rhythm. This is usually the deciding factor.
  2. Collaboration and sharing. Decide whether you need real-time shared editing and publishing, or mainly individual use. Products built around personal knowledge management may not offer the same shared-editing model.
  3. Platform coverage and offline access. Confirm your devices are supported and whether you need to edit without a connection. Supernotes lists offline editing; check each alternative’s own platform page before deciding.
  4. Free-plan limits and paid cost. Compare card or storage limits, included features, billing period and current price on the live pricing page for each product.
  5. Privacy and encryption. Separate a vendor’s privacy statement from an independent security review. The two are different things.

No single app is the best choice for everyone. Each one is best for a particular workflow, and the axes above show which workflow it serves.

Privacy: what is and is not established

Supernotes’ FAQ says end-to-end encryption is not currently available. It explains that the product’s web-first collaboration makes end-to-end encryption difficult to implement without hindering sharing. The same FAQ says the Supernotes team will not read or access note content unless it has express permission during a customer-support interaction.

These are the company’s own statements. They are not an independent security audit, and the sources reviewed did not include one for Supernotes or for any of the alternatives. If encryption is a requirement, that is a reason to look at the alternatives’ documentation on the same question before deciding.

Which alternative to test first

  • You want to stay on notecards with sharing and offline editing: Supernotes is the product built around that combination. Start with the free Starter plan and test whether 100 cards is enough.
  • You outgrow the 100-card limit and want unlimited cards: compare the Unlimited plan’s current price with the alternatives’ paid tiers before choosing.
  • You want maximum linking and customization: start with Obsidian or Logseq, and expect to spend time on setup.
  • You want fast, connected capture: try Reflect or Capacities, and check whether their graph views match how you review notes.
  • You mostly write documents and manage tasks: look at Craft first.
  • You want something simple and Markdown-first: Bear is the closest match on Product Hunt’s list, but confirm that the sharing features you need are available.

No independent head-to-head benchmark of these apps was found in the sources reviewed as of October 2026. Use this framework as a starting point, then run a one-week trial with your own notes before committing.
