An AI agent is a tool-using component that can carry out a task; “agentic AI” commonly describes a broader system that coordinates agents and manages a workflow. Orchestrating several agents can help when work divides into distinct specialties or independent tasks. It is not automatically better: for predictable or simple work, one agent—or no agent at all—may be easier, cheaper, and more reliable.
What are AI agents and agentic AI?
The terms overlap, and there is no single settled definition. The OECD’s 2026 conceptual review describes “agentic AI” as most often referring to systems that integrate and coordinate multiple AI agents. In that common usage, an individual agent working without broader system-level orchestration is not usually called agentic AI. The OECD also presents agency as a spectrum, from reactive agents and copilot-like support to systems that coordinate agents and manage workflows with limited human oversight. OECD, The agentic AI landscape and its conceptual foundations (2026).

Operationally, OpenAI’s practical guide describes an agent as a model-equipped system with instructions and tools that runs through a workflow until it reaches an exit condition. A multi-agent system distributes that workflow across coordinated agents. These are useful working definitions from a product vendor, not a universal technical standard. A system can also be more or less agentic depending on how much it plans, acts, and operates without human oversight.

When should I use a single agent vs. multiple agents?
Start with the simplest design that can meet the need. A single agent can use several tools and instructions in a loop, so the presence of multiple tools does not by itself mean a workflow needs multiple agents. Add orchestration when the work has meaningful boundaries—for example, separate specialties, independent analyses, or steps whose outputs need to be combined.
| Approach | Good fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| One agent with tools | A task with a coherent goal and a manageable workflow. | Simpler to build and maintain; a growing set of tools and instructions can become harder to evaluate and manage. |
| Sequential orchestration | A known sequence in which each step uses the previous step’s output. | Predictable control, but the workflow generally cannot skip or reorder steps flexibly. |
| Concurrent specialists | Independent subtasks or analyses that can run in parallel before results are combined. | Can divide work, but coordination and synthesis add overhead. |
| Manager with specialist agents | A workflow where a manager should retain responsibility for the final answer while specialists complete bounded subtasks. | Keeps final-answer ownership in one place, but requires clear task boundaries and coordination. |
| Handoff | A branch where a specialist should take over responsibility for the next response or action. | Transfers ownership, so routing rules and specialist roles need to be clear. |
| Dynamic coordination | Open-ended work without a predetermined step-by-step plan. | Offers flexibility while making planning, external actions, and oversight more demanding. |
These patterns are not mutually exclusive. A workflow might collect information in a fixed sequence and then run independent analyses concurrently. The right choice depends on who controls each transition, who owns the final output, and how much flexibility the task actually needs. Google Cloud’s guidance cautions that a predictable, highly structured task—or one that a single model call can handle—may not need an agentic workflow. What does orchestration look like in practice?
Consider a research request that needs several kinds of work. A manager agent could divide it into source gathering, analysis, and review. Independent source-gathering tasks could run concurrently; the manager could then combine their outputs, and a reviewer could check claims before the result is delivered. This illustrates a manager-and-specialists design, not proof that adding agents makes research more accurate. Accuracy still depends on the sources, instructions, access, and evaluation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A different request may need only one agent to look up information and draft a response. Adding parallel agents to that workflow could create more coordination work than useful output. If the steps are fixed and known, code-directed transitions can also be more predictable than asking a model to decide every next step. OpenAI’s orchestration documentation describes both agents-as-tools and handoffs, and distinguishes LLM-led orchestration from code-directed flows. How do I choose a design pattern for an agentic AI system?
Choose based on the workflow’s control needs, not the number of agents that sounds most capable. Before implementation, answer these questions:
- Is the sequence known? Use a fixed, code-directed sequence when steps are predictable. Use model-directed choices when the next step depends on interpreting the task.
- Can tasks run independently? Parallel specialists make sense when their work can proceed separately and a later step can combine their outputs.
- Who owns the final answer? Keep a manager in charge when one component must synthesize the result. Use a handoff when a specialist should take over the next response or action.
- How much flexibility is necessary? Prefer a simpler path for tightly structured work; reserve dynamic coordination for tasks that genuinely need planning or branching.
- What context and tools does each component need? Give each specialist access only to the data and actions required for its role.
- How will the workflow be checked? Define evaluation, monitoring, and failure handling before relying on the system for consequential work.

What does multi-agent orchestration add—and what does it cost?
Orchestration can make a complex workflow more modular: separate components can own distinct tasks, and independent tasks can run concurrently. That structure can help when a single component would otherwise have to manage many unrelated responsibilities. It does not guarantee better output, and the guidance cited here does not establish a universal performance advantage over a single agent.
Each additional agent and coordination step also creates more to manage. Plan for evaluation and monitoring, communication or routing failures, reliability, computational and operating costs, and security. Scope each agent’s data and tool access to its role. Use structured outputs or code-directed transitions where predictable behavior matters, and require human approval before actions that need review. OpenAI’s guide recommends incremental design; Google Cloud likewise advises against agentic workflows when simpler approaches fit. OpenAI, A practical guide to building agents and Google Cloud Architecture Center, Choose a design pattern for your agentic AI system.
How should you build up from a lone agent?
- Define the task and its exit condition. Be specific about what counts as a completed workflow and when it should stop or ask for help.
- Begin with one agent and the necessary tools. Keep its instructions and tool set focused; do not add specialists before identifying work that needs separation.
- Evaluate real workflow runs. Track whether the agent completes the task, where it fails, and which decisions or steps need tighter control.
- Add a pattern to address a demonstrated need. Use a fixed sequence for known dependencies, parallel agents for independent work, a manager for bounded specialists, or a handoff when ownership should change.
- Apply safeguards and monitor changes. Limit access, add human approval where appropriate, and re-evaluate the workflow as tools, instructions, or coordination change.
Framework documentation is implementation guidance, not a controlled comparison of products. For example, Anthropic’s documentation describes a coordinator delegating parallel subtasks to specialized agents, but identifies the feature as beta and uses a versioned beta header. Check the current documentation and availability before relying on that specific implementation. Anthropic Claude Platform Docs, Multiagent orchestration.
