Adding memory is useful only if it changes what an agent does later—and improves the result. The title’s claim of three outcomes cannot be verified from the public sources available here: they do not identify the agent, the failure, the memory change, or the runs. Without those records, the three outcomes should not be presented as independently documented findings or attributed to memory alone.
What counts as evidence that memory helped?
An agent recalling stored text is not the same as an agent using experience successfully. A meaningful comparison asks whether the memory changed a later decision, whether that decision improved the task result, and whether the improvement holds across repeated runs.

- Task result: Did the agent complete the task, and did the environment reach the intended state?
- Repeatability: Did it succeed on repeated runs, or was the apparent improvement a one-off?
- Memory use: What was saved, when was it retrieved, and did it change the next action? Was the recalled information useful, stale, irrelevant, or misapplied?
- Efficiency: Did the change affect turns, tool calls, tokens, latency, or cost? Compare only measures logged consistently in each condition.
- Interaction quality and risk: Did the agent reduce user effort while respecting consent, policy requirements, and the consequences of state-changing actions?
These measures answer a practical question posed by Microsoft Open Source in its STATE-Bench announcement: “Does my memory system make my agent more reliable?” The question is a test objective, not a claim that memory necessarily improves performance.

What the available benchmarks show—and do not show
STATE-Bench: completion, reliability, efficiency, and user experience
Microsoft Open Source’s May 19, 2026 announcement describes STATE-Bench as an open-source, memory-agnostic benchmark with 450 tasks across customer support, travel, and shopping. Tasks cover policy compliance, information synthesis, and multi-step procedures, using a stateful environment, simulated customers, and success assertions. Some tasks that change state are scored against a target state. Microsoft Open Source’s STATE-Bench announcement describes four evaluation dimensions: completion, reliability across runs, efficiency, and user experience.

- Boosts System Performance: 32GB DDR5 RAM laptop memory kit (2x16GB) that operates at 5600MHz, 5200MHz, or 4800MHz to improve multitasking and system responsiveness for smoother performance
- Accelerated gaming performance: Every millisecond gained in fast-paced gameplay counts—power through heavy workloads and benefit from versatile downclocking and higher frame rates
- Optimized DDR5 compatibility: Best for 12th Gen Intel Core and AMD Ryzen 7000 Series processors — Intel XMP 3.0 and AMD EXPO also supported on the same RAM module
- Trusted Micron Quality: Backed by 42 years of memory expertise, this DDR5 RAM is rigorously tested at both component and module levels, ensuring top performance and reliability
- ECC Type = Non-ECC, Form Factor = SODIMM, Pin Count = 262-Pin, PC Speed = PC5-44800, Voltage = 1.1V, Rank And Configuration = 1Rx8
Each task is run five times. The benchmark’s “pass^5” measure is the share of tasks that succeed on all five runs, a stricter signal of consistency than a single successful attempt. Efficiency includes turns, unnecessary tool calls, and input, output, and retrieval tokens. User experience is judged on a one-to-five rubric that includes user effort and consent.
For its baseline, Microsoft reports GPT-5.1 without memory, with each task run five times across the three domains. The announcement says the model completed fewer than half of tasks reliably; about 30% of travel tasks succeeded across all five runs. These are Microsoft’s reported baseline results, not independent evidence that adding memory would improve them. The announcement presents memory comparison as an open challenge.

MemoryArena: learning from earlier actions
MemoryArena tests whether an agent can learn from earlier actions and feedback, distill that experience into memory, and use it to guide later actions across interdependent sessions. Its evaluation areas include web navigation, preference-constrained planning, progressive information search, and sequential formal reasoning. The paper’s authors report that agents with near-saturated performance on existing long-context benchmarks such as LoCoMo performed poorly in their agentic setting. That gap illustrates why remembering information and applying experience during later action are different capabilities; it does not establish that every memory system will fail or succeed in other settings.

AMA-Bench: long-horizon trajectories
AMA-Bench focuses on long-horizon agent trajectories, including states, actions, observations, and tool outputs rather than dialogue alone. It combines real-world agent trajectories and expert-curated questions with synthetic trajectories and rule-based questions. In their own benchmark, Zhao and coauthors report that AMA-Agent reached 57.22% accuracy and exceeded the strongest baseline by 11.16 percentage points. Those are the paper’s results on AMA-Bench—not a general estimate of memory’s effect or evidence for the title’s unnamed experiment. See the AMA-Bench paper.
How to substantiate a “three outcomes” comparison
To explain what changed after memory was added, the report needs the original run records and enough setup detail to separate memory’s effect from other changes. For each condition, record:

- The same task definition, starting state, success criteria, model version, prompt, and tools.
- What memory was available, what the agent saved, and whether or when it retrieved that information.
- The action sequence and final environment state for each run, including failures and side effects.
- The number of runs and the exact success criterion; report both individual results and the denominator.
- Consistent efficiency measures, such as turns, tool calls, and token counts, if they were logged.
- Any user effort, consent, or policy issues relevant to the task.
If the model, prompt, tools, task state, or scoring method also changed, describe those changes and avoid claiming memory caused the outcome. A reliable account distinguishes the observed sequence—failure, memory change, later result—from a causal conclusion supported by controlled comparisons.
Why success should be measured across runs
An agent that avoids a known failure once may still be unreliable. Repeated runs reveal whether it consistently applies the remembered lesson or succeeds only under favorable conditions. STATE-Bench’s pass^5 measure makes that distinction explicit by requiring success on all five runs of a task. Other experiments can use a different number of runs, but should state the denominator and define what counts as success before comparing conditions.

Memory can also make an agent more expensive or burdensome even when it improves completion. Retrieval tokens, extra turns, unnecessary tool calls, user effort, and consent are part of the result—not details to omit once a task succeeds.
What readers can conclude from the title
The title describes a specific agent and three observed outcomes, but the cited public sources do not identify those runs or verify that memory caused them. The benchmarks establish useful ways to evaluate memory: test later action, measure repeatability, and account for efficiency and user experience. Their findings are specific to their tasks, agents, and scoring methods; they cannot fill in the missing details of this particular comparison.
