In a graph-based design, state, nodes, edges, transitions, checkpoints, and human interrupts are explicit artifacts that a team can inspect, render, instrument, and test. Huy Nguyen described this shift after building a financial-domain system whose intent classifier and conditional routing worked but became difficult to understand and operate.
His concise prescription was: “The fix was to stop writing the flow as control flow and start declaring it as a graph.” That does not mean every prompt needs a graph. It means coordination among tools, agent runs, services, approvals, retries, and recovery paths deserves a structure that can be observed as a whole.

What agent graph engineering means
Agent graph engineering is the design of an AI system as a declared network of execution steps. A graph normally contains:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- State: the typed data available as the run moves through the system, such as the user request, classification, retrieved records, tool results, approval status, and final response.
- Nodes: executable units such as an agent call, a retrieval operation, a policy check, a tool invocation, or a response formatter.
- Edges: the allowed transitions between nodes.
- Conditional edges: routing rules that choose the next node from current state.
- Checkpoints: persisted snapshots that support pause, resume, retry, and crash recovery.
- Interrupts: explicit stops for human approval or additional input.
The graph is not merely a diagram for documentation. It is the runtime’s representation of the flow. That makes the system shape inspectable and gives tracing, testing, and operations a common object to work with.

Nguyen separates this work from loop engineering. Loop engineering designs the repeated cycle inside one agent: receive context, call a model, use a tool, inspect the result, and continue until a stopping condition is met. Graph engineering coordinates several such cycles and the services around them. A single agent loop can be sound while the overall product still has opaque routing, disconnected traces, fragile streaming, or no safe way to resume after approval.
The distinction matters because many early systems try to solve coordination with abstractions built for one loop. When routing spans multiple agents, tools, services, or user decisions, a declared graph is usually a better fit.
Why nested conditionals become an operational problem
Nguyen’s earlier financial product used an intent classifier followed by nested conditionals. It worked, but the implementation created several forms of hidden complexity.

The system shape lived in code and a diagram
To understand the complete route, a teammate had to read control flow and consult a hand-drawn diagram. Any change could make that drawing stale. There was no authoritative, executable representation of the system’s topology.
Model spans did not form an end-to-end trace
Individual model calls were visible, but one user message could not be followed cleanly through classification, routing, tools, intermediate results, and the final answer. Observability showed pieces without showing the run as one connected flow.
Frontend and backend contracts could drift
WebSocket message shapes were maintained in two places. A backend change could therefore leave the frontend expecting a different event name or payload shape. The failure often appeared only during a live interaction.
Streaming failures were hard to reproduce
Progress events could lag or disappear. Because streaming was not treated as a typed, generated contract, reproducing a production report required reconstructing timing and routing by hand.

Onboarding and debugging were expensive
New teammates needed weeks to build a mental model. A production incident could trigger a code-reading expedition before anyone knew which branch, tool, or intermediate state had been involved.
These are structural problems, not merely missing dashboards. More model spans do not create a declared workflow. A graph addresses the missing artifact first; tracing and tests then attach to that artifact.
Implicit conditionals versus a declared graph
The practical difference is easiest to see across the decisions an operating team must make.
| Concern | Implicit conditional flow | Declared graph flow |
|---|---|---|
| System shape | Reconstructed from functions, branches, and documentation that can drift. | Represented by nodes and edges that can be rendered and inspected. |
| State inspection | State is scattered across local variables, callbacks, and service calls. | Shared, typed state can be examined at each transition. |
| Trace continuity | Model calls may appear as separate spans without a run-level path. | Graph transitions and model calls can share one connected trace. |
| Checkpointing and recovery | Requires custom persistence and restart logic. | Checkpoint support can pause a run and resume it from known state. |
| Human approval | Often implemented as ad hoc flags and callbacks. | An interrupt is an explicit edge in the execution lifecycle. |
| Tool and message contracts | Shapes are inferred from code and may change silently. | Typed inputs and outputs make incompatible changes visible earlier. |
| Frontend synchronization | WebSocket payloads are duplicated between client and server. | A typed transport can generate a client-facing contract. |
| Streaming progress | Events are emitted from arbitrary call sites with inconsistent context. | Progress can be associated with graph state and broadcast from deep nodes. |
| Deterministic tests | Branch behavior is difficult to isolate from live model responses. | Nodes and transitions can be exercised with mocked model outputs. |
| Model-change evaluation | Prompt or provider changes are judged mainly from production symptoms. | Real-model evaluations can check regressions separately from fast unit tests. |
A production-oriented stack and what each layer owns
The architecture described by Nguyen uses Python services with clear ownership boundaries rather than one monolithic agent process.
Agent layer: Pydantic AI
Pydantic AI supplies the agent-level abstraction: typed tool calls, typed outputs, typed dependencies, and provider independence. This layer is where a model is asked to perform a focused task and where the application validates what goes into and comes out of that task. Keeping these contracts typed prevents a graph node from quietly receiving an unexpected object or returning a shape that downstream code cannot handle.
Flow layer: LangGraph
LangGraph represents the larger execution flow with state, nodes, conditional edges, graph diagrams, inspectable transitions, and checkpointing. It is the appropriate layer for deciding whether a ticket should go to retrieval, a specialist agent, a policy gate, or a human reviewer, and for resuming a run after an interruption.
Transport layer: chanx
Nguyen uses chanx, software he built, as a typed WebSocket transport. It can broadcast progress from deep inside a graph and generate an AsyncAPI contract for frontend clients. The important architectural property is not the name of the package but the ownership rule: event names and payloads should be generated or validated from one definition instead of hand-maintained in React and the server.

Tracing layer: OpenTelemetry
OpenTelemetry provides vendor-neutral tracing. Instrument graph transitions and model calls so a single user request has one connected trace, exportable through OTLP to the tracing backend your team operates. A useful trace should answer which node ran, what state entered it, which tools were called, where an interrupt occurred, and how the final response was produced.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTesting and evaluation layers
pytest with mocked LLM responses provides fast, deterministic tests for routing, state updates, error paths, and contract validation without API spend. Real-model evaluations cover what mocks cannot: prompt changes, provider behavior, tool selection quality, and regressions caused by a new model. Keep those suites separate so a slow or variable evaluation does not block every code change.
Reference service architecture
A practical deployment separates user-facing concerns from graph execution:
- React frontend: renders conversation, approval controls, and progress events.
- Django backend: owns users, tickets, history, authentication, and durable product data.
- FastAPI agent service: owns graphs, tools, checkpoints, model calls, and execution state.
Typed REST and WebSocket contracts connect these services. The Django service can create or authorize a run, while the FastAPI service executes it and emits typed progress. This separation keeps business records out of transient graph state while still allowing a graph node to fetch the records it needs through a deliberate interface.
How to design a graph for a real agent
1. Define the state before writing nodes
Start with a state object that names the facts required across transitions. Include the original request, authenticated user or ticket identifier, classification, intermediate tool results, approval decisions, errors, and final output. Mark fields as optional only when a node genuinely creates them later. A state definition that is too broad becomes an unstructured bag of data; one that is too narrow forces hidden side channels.
2. Give each node one responsibility
Examples include classify_intent, load_ticket, retrieve_policy, draft_response, request_approval, and send_response. A node should read the state it needs and return explicit updates. Avoid a “do everything” node whose internal branches recreate the original opacity.
3. Declare routing as edges
After classification, express the allowed destinations as conditional edges. For example, a billing intent may route to a billing tool, a security-sensitive request may route to an approval gate, and an unsupported intent may route to a clarification node. Keep the routing function small and deterministic; put model reasoning in a node whose output is validated before routing uses it.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
4. Add checkpoints at recovery boundaries
Persist state before operations that may be slow, expensive, or irreversible. Checkpointing lets a crashed worker resume without repeating every prior model call and gives operators a known point from which to retry. The checkpoint identifier should be associated with the user request and visible in logs and traces.
5. Model human approval as an interrupt
When a policy requires a person, stop the graph after preparing the proposed action. Persist the state and emit an approval event containing the decision context. When the person approves or rejects, resume the same run from its checkpoint with a typed decision. Do not emulate this with a long-running request or an in-memory callback; either approach can lose the pending work when a process restarts.

Each significant transition can publish a typed event such as node started, tool completed, approval required, or run finished. A transport layer such as chanx can broadcast those events even when the emitting node is several calls below the request handler. The frontend then renders a stable event contract instead of guessing progress from partial text.
7. Instrument one trace across every layer
Create or propagate a trace context from the incoming request. Add spans for graph entry, node execution, tool calls, model calls, checkpoint writes, interrupts, and final delivery. Include safe identifiers such as run ID and node name; avoid placing secrets or full sensitive prompts in attributes. Export through OTLP so the tracing backend remains replaceable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Testing strategy: deterministic paths plus model evaluations
Fast graph tests with mocked responses
Use pytest fixtures to replace model calls with fixed outputs. Assert that a given state enters the expected node, that conditional edges choose the correct destination, that malformed tool output is rejected, and that an interrupt writes a resumable checkpoint. Test failure branches deliberately: unavailable tools, invalid model output, duplicate approval messages, and a worker restart after checkpoint creation.
Contract tests for REST and WebSockets
Validate that the backend emits event names and payload fields promised by the generated contract. Have a frontend fixture consume representative sequences, including out-of-order or repeated terminal events if the transport can deliver them. These tests catch drift before a deployment.

Real-model regression evaluations
Mocks cannot reveal that a new model chooses the wrong tool, follows a prompt less reliably, or changes the structure of a response. Maintain a curated evaluation set and run real-model checks when prompts, providers, or model versions change. Treat the results as regression evidence, not as a replacement for deterministic path tests.

When a graph is the right abstraction
A graph is justified when the system has multiple agents or tools, branching business rules, asynchronous work, approval steps, durable conversations, crash recovery requirements, or a frontend that needs reliable progress. It is especially valuable when several engineers must understand and modify the same flow.
A tiny assistant that performs one model call and returns text may not need a graph framework. Introducing one for a linear function can add ceremony without creating a useful artifact. The threshold is coordination complexity, not the presence of an LLM.
Tradeoffs and migration pitfalls
The initial design is slower
Declaring state and edges takes longer than adding another conditional. The first weeks can feel slower while the team learns to think in transitions and recovery boundaries. That cost is the investment in a shared, executable map.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Your first graph may be discarded
An initial design can encode assumptions about state that turn out to be wrong. Reworking the graph after observing real runs is normal. Treat the graph as a design artifact that should become clearer through use, not as a one-time diagram to defend.
Framework boundaries remain real
LangGraph supplies the flow primitives, but teams still need to decide how their application stores domain records, authenticates users, and exposes events. A generic custom-stream channel may not provide the typed, generated frontend contract a product requires; that is the practical reason Nguyen adds chanx. The framework does not remove those design decisions.
Do not confuse visibility with correctness
A rendered graph and a connected trace show what happened. They do not guarantee that a policy is correct, a model is safe, or a tool has no side effects. Pair observability with typed validation, authorization at the tool boundary, idempotent operations where possible, and explicit human gates for irreversible actions.
The result: an agent that behaves like software
Graph engineering turns hidden coordination into inspectable structure. Teams can see the route, inspect state at a transition, connect a user request to every model and tool call, stop safely for approval, resume after failure, and test routing without spending on an API call. The model remains probabilistic, but the surrounding system gains explicit contracts and recovery behavior.
Nguyen’s broader observation is that graphs are not a novelty invented by current AI marketing: “Graphs do, and I think that is because the idea is older than the hype around it.” For a production agent, the payoff is practical. As he puts it, “The agent stops being magic and starts being software.”
