That is the argument Johannes Cortez makes in his essay, “Agent esports starts before the match.” It is a proposed way to think about competition, not evidence of an established league or a proven competitive format.
What does it mean for agent esports to start before the match?
Cortez’s central idea is that human input would shape an agent squad both before and during play. A team might author a playbook, train preferred habits and decide how much authority a human coach retains once the match is underway. In that framing, preparation is not just a warm-up: it helps define how the agents respond to the game.

“The meta starts before the lobby,” Cortez writes. That line is the essay’s thesis, not an established finding or independent consensus. The essay predicts that teams using similar models could still behave differently because their people train different instincts into them. It offers no match data to test that prediction.
What does the Sitrep demo show?
The concrete example in the essay is a Sitrep demo that opens on a tactical map, then cuts to a five-person squad advancing into a fight. Cortez uses that sequence to argue that “The game is not only what happens when someone pulls the trigger.” The described sequence makes preparation and tactical direction part of the imagined contest.

The essay does not explain the demo’s model architecture, evaluation, game rules or commercial availability. Its description should not be read as proof of a released game, organized tournament or operating agent-esports league.
How does conventional esports preparation provide context?
Preparation already extends beyond the live match in conventional esports, though the details depend on the event. The official EA FC Pro Champions Cup 2025 terms and conditions describe competition-specific preparation that includes practice builds, setup and testing, and equipment supplied for the event. Those rules apply to that FC Pro competition—not to Sitrep or agent esports. They illustrate that event procedures can shape preparation, but do not establish how an agent competition would be run.

What would an agent-esports format need to settle?
If agent esports develops into organized competition, the concept raises practical questions that the essay does not answer. These are useful design questions, not published standards or existing rules:

- Training and updates: How would teams develop their agents’ habits, and what changes would be allowed between matches or events?
- Fair-play verification: How would officials check that teams follow shared rules and that an agent’s behavior comes from permitted preparation?
How organizers answer those questions could influence what skill a competition rewards: the agents’ in-game execution, the team’s preparation, its coaching choices, or some combination. No common format or event rule set is established by the cited material.

What is known—and what remains unproven?
The available sources support a description of Cortez’s proposal and one separate example of conventional tournament preparation. They provide no agent-esports performance statistics, measure of league scale or current agent-esports event rules. Claims that agents outperform human teams, or that a particular coaching system produces better results, would go beyond this evidence.
