In the X.500 model, a client acting for a user can communicate with one or more servers, and those servers may each hold part of the directory information. LDAP is a protocol for accessing such services—not another name for the entire directory service.
What “distributed directory service” means
A directory service is an information service: it organizes information so users or applications can look it up and perform directory operations. It is distributed when cooperating systems provide access to that logically organized information base. The term describes an architectural arrangement, not one mandatory way to divide or synchronize data.

The X.500 model illustrates the roles. A user or another entity requests information; a client acts on the requester’s behalf; and one or more servers answer. A server may hold only a fragment of the directory information rather than the whole information base.

- Directory user: A person or other entity seeking information or requesting an operation.
- Client or Directory User Agent (DUA): Sends directory requests on the user’s behalf.
- Server or Directory System Agent (DSA): Responds to requests and may hold a fragment of the directory.
- Directory Information Base (DIB): The information maintained by the directory. It includes user information as well as administrative and operational information.
- Directory Information Tree (DIT): The hierarchical arrangement used to organize LDAP directory entries.
- LDAP: A protocol used to access directory services based on X.500 data and service models.
RFC 4511 states: “LDAP provides access to distributed directory services that act in accordance with X.500 data and service models.” This wording describes LDAP’s role as an access protocol; it does not make LDAP synonymous with every directory service. See RFC 4511 and RFC 4512.

Distribution is not the same as replication
Distribution can mean that information is divided among servers. Replication means maintaining copies or shadows of some information on multiple servers. A system can distribute information, replicate it, or use both approaches. Synchronization mechanisms can update a copy of a DIT fragment, but their behavior depends on the protocol and implementation.
These distinctions matter when a client requests a change or reads information from different servers. The fact that a directory is distributed does not, by itself, establish which server accepts writes, how updates spread, or whether every server returns the newest value.

What consistency guarantees to expect
There is no single consistency guarantee implied by the phrase “distributed directory service.” RFC 3384 documents multiple replication consistency models. Its eventual-consistency model describes updates propagating to reachable replicas along paths of eventual connectivity; it is a model, not a universal promise that all directory products make.

Do not infer immediate consistency or always-current replicas from the directory’s distributed design alone. How to evaluate a directory implementation
When comparing or designing systems, examine the specific implementation on these dimensions:
- Data placement: Is information partitioned across servers, replicated, or both?
- Write handling: Which server or servers accept updates, and how do those updates propagate?
- Consistency: What convergence or consistency guarantees does the implementation document?
- Server discovery and failures: How do clients find servers, follow referrals, and respond when a server is unavailable?
- Directory management: How are schema, access control, administrative information, and operational information handled?
These are comparison questions, not universal behaviors prescribed by the label. Check the relevant implementation documentation before drawing product-specific conclusions. The standards cited here are RFC 4511 and RFC 4512 (June 2006), RFC 3384 (October 2002), RFC 4533 (June 2006), and an ITU-T X.500 contents page dated February 2001; use them for the concepts they describe, not as evidence of a particular product’s current conformance or security behavior.
