Climate models suggest suitable habitat for introduced Gemsbok could extend well beyond their current New Mexico range by 2100, potentially reaching parts of Texas, Arizona, Utah, California, and farther north. That is a forecast of environmental suitability—not a map of where animals will certainly travel or establish populations.
What the study projects through 2100
A 2026 Journal of Mammalogy study modeled potential Gemsbok habitat under three climate pathways: SSP1-2.6, SSP3-7.0, and SSP5-8.5. It examined three future periods—2011–2040, 2041–2070, and 2071–2100—and ran models at two geographic extents, using areas buffered 25 km and 100 km around the occurrence data. The authors found broad agreement that suitable habitat expands and becomes more aggregated and connected, although the pattern varies by region and scenario. Journal of Mammalogy study

The University of Illinois summary describes modeled suitability extending beyond New Mexico into Texas, Arizona, Utah, and California, with some potential suitability reaching southern Washington and Montana by 2100. It also highlights western Texas, western New Mexico, Arizona, and parts of California, including Death Valley, as places where habitat patches could coalesce. These are broad model projections; the sources do not establish that every named area is suitable under every scenario. University of Illinois summary
How to read the climate scenarios and map
Three pathways, not three migration predictions
SSP1-2.6, SSP3-7.0, and SSP5-8.5 represent different climate-change pathways. The models compare how environmental suitability may shift under each; they do not predict a single route or date when Gemsbok will move. The study reports that suitability could connect the present range eastward along low-elevation areas even under SSP1-2.6. Under SSP3-7.0 and SSP5-8.5, modeled suitability also increases in some mountainous areas that may otherwise act as barriers to eastward movement. University of Illinois study summary

Two extents, three time windows
The 25 km and 100 km buffers let researchers test how the geographic scale used to fit a species-distribution model affects its projections. The study reports high overall agreement between extents and limited scale effects, but also identifies uncertainty in parts of the north for one extent and the east for another. Its time windows show projected suitability across the century, rather than a claim that expansion will happen at a steady pace. Journal of Mammalogy study
Suitable habitat is not confirmed occupancy
A suitability model identifies places whose environmental conditions resemble locations associated with recorded Gemsbok occurrences. It cannot establish that an animal can cross a road, fence, mountain range, or other barrier, reach a modeled patch, survive there, or reproduce. The authors specifically caution that projections into northern areas are limited by how different those habitats are from the places where Gemsbok currently occur. Why Gemsbok are in New Mexico
The New Mexico population began with 95 captive-bred oryx released on the Tularosa Range of White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) between 1969 and 1977, according to the New Mexico Department of Wildlife and the National Park Service. Thousands now reside on the missile range, the NPS says. New Mexico Department of Wildlife National Park Service

The population is managed through hunting. The NMDOW’s 2023–2024 forecast said annual harvest had exceeded 1,500 in recent years at the time of publication; that is a historical management figure, not a 2026 count. The agency also said it increased off-range public draw licenses during 2022 rule development, citing high success and other information indicating a growing population. New Mexico Department of Wildlife forecast
White Sands National Park, which is distinct from WSMR, uses measures to reduce oryx impacts and keep the animals out. The NPS reports that a 67-mile (108 km) boundary fence was erected in 1996 for that purpose, and that annual hunts have continued to help control and stabilize the population. National Park Service

Gemsbok are adapted to hot, dry conditions and can go long periods without drinking; locally, the NPS lists desert grasses, yucca, buffalo gourds, and mesquite bean pods among their foods. Those traits help explain why researchers are examining the species’ potential range under a changing climate, but they do not by themselves show that new areas will be colonized. National Park Service
If the animals expand, potential management concerns include competition for forage with cattle and native ungulates, pressure on vulnerable grasslands, and disease transmission into new areas. The study notes serological evidence of several diseases in Southwest Gemsbok, making transmission a concern to assess—not proof that outbreaks will occur wherever suitability is modeled. The authors also identify human-caused mortality as an expected population limit in the introduced range. University of Illinois study summary

The study’s maps describe potential habitat, not a guaranteed expansion boundary. Whether Gemsbok reach and persist in any newly suitable area will depend on dispersal, physical and human-made barriers, local conditions, mortality, and management decisions. The authors call for further work on dispersal barriers and management perspectives; the accessible study findings do not provide a precise area estimate or probability that a particular place will be colonized.
