- Prerecorded sermons in a loop: Store the media and run an encoder on a cloud server. This is the VPS workflow described below.
- Live camera and microphone: The VPS cannot capture a physical camera or microphone by itself. You need a reliable source-to-server contribution path and possibly capture equipment; those requirements cannot be sized without knowing your source and workflow.
A basic VPS architecture is media source → encoder on a Linux VPS → YouTube Live over RTMPS. YouTube handles delivery and transcoding for viewers. A VPS hosts the encoder process, but you remain responsible for configuration, monitoring and recovery; buying a VPS does not itself guarantee continuous availability.
A low-cost published VPS example—and what it does not prove
Amazon Lightsail’s Linux/Unix entry plan with public IPv4 was listed at $5 USD per month on its pricing page checked in 2026. Its listed bundle includes 0.5 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, 20 GB SSD and 1 TB of transfer. This is a concrete price reference, not a confirmed recommendation for a particular encoder workload. The source format, codec, resolution and actual process load are not specified, so test the exact stream before relying on this instance.

Lightsail counts inbound and outbound traffic against the transfer allowance, but AWS says only excess outbound transfer is charged. The allowance is half the listed amount in Asia Pacific (Mumbai, Sydney, Jakarta, Malaysia and Hong Kong) and South America (São Paulo). Your stream’s outbound feed to YouTube uses transfer; actual usage and any overage depend on bitrate, region, other traffic and billing period. Set up a VPS-to-YouTube stream
The following is the operational sequence. The exact encoder commands and server sizing depend on the source media and software you choose; the available evidence does not establish a single command or a reliable minimum server size for every sermon stream.

- Confirm YouTube Live eligibility. Sign in to the channel and verify that Live streaming is available before provisioning a server.
- Choose a VPS region and plan. Consider network path, included transfer and CPU/memory as well as the monthly price. Treat the entry Lightsail bundle as a candidate to test, not as a proven fit.
- Prepare the media source and encoder. For a prerecorded loop, make sure the source files are available to the server and that the encoder can keep the intended playlist running. For live capture, separately design and test how the camera/microphone feed reaches the VPS.
- Get the ingest address and key. In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the RTMPS stream URL and stream key. Keep the key private. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL and specifies port 443 in its RTMPS guidance.
- Configure the encoder. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval (not above four seconds). For H.264, YouTube’s current settings table lists 3 Mbps recommended for 720p30; for 1080p30 it lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. Its audio settings include 128 Kbps for stereo. Match the encoder output to the source and consult the full YouTube encoder settings and bitrate table for other resolutions and formats.
- Start a test stream before depending on it. Check picture, audio, movement, encoder load, memory use and YouTube stream health. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream. During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.”
- Plan restart, alerts and recovery. Arrange a way to detect a stopped encoder and restart it, and alerts for failures. Rehearse recovery after a process, instance or network interruption. A low-cost VPS listing does not establish a particular recovery feature or uptime level.
Copyright and channel-policy checks for sermon content
Before scheduling a continuous stream, confirm that you have the rights to every part of the broadcast—not just the spoken sermon. Music, recordings, images and other material can have separate rights. A sermon stream’s religious subject does not by itself establish that all included media is cleared. Review YouTube’s notices in Live Control Room and address any restrictions before relying on the stream. Do not assume that looping a recording changes the rights status or guarantees channel monetization; the sources cited here do not establish a specific outcome for reused-content review.
Test the workload before committing to 24/7 operation
- Run the exact media, resolution, codec and bitrate planned for the channel, rather than estimating from a different workload.
- Observe CPU and memory use over a meaningful test period and confirm that YouTube reports healthy ingest.
- Check transfer usage for the selected region and account for other server traffic.
- Test what happens when the encoder stops, the server restarts or its network connection drops; verify your restart and alert path.
- Confirm that a person can respond to alerts and handle YouTube-side interruptions.
