OBS vs FFmpeg for a Church’s Nonstop Prerecorded YouTube Stream

OBS suits churches that want a visual workflow; FFmpeg suits operators comfortable maintaining commands. Neither guarantees nonstop streaming, so test, monitor YouTube stream health, and plan for the 12-hour archive limit.

Choose OBS Studio if church volunteers need a visual, operator-friendly production workflow. Choose FFmpeg if someone on the team can maintain command-line settings or scripts and wants a repeatable input loop. Neither choice is proven to run nonstop without interruption: test the complete setup, watch YouTube’s stream health, and plan for the platform’s 12-hour archive limit.

OBS or FFmpeg: which fits your church?

Consideration OBS Studio FFmpeg
Best fit A team that prefers a graphical workflow and visible production controls. An operator comfortable configuring and maintaining commands or scripts.
Controls documented for this use Choose a listed streaming service or custom server, enter a stream key, and set streaming and audio bitrates. OBS also has separate recording configuration. Use the input option -stream_loop -1 to loop an input indefinitely.
Playlist or loop setup Depends on the actual source and configuration; OBS’s output controls alone do not establish a repeated-playback schedule. Input looping is documented, but it does not guarantee a seamless file boundary or an uninterrupted YouTube connection.
What the documentation does not establish Guaranteed unattended operation or uninterrupted runtime. Successful reconnection after every network failure or a universally suitable command.
Who must observe and recover the stream Your team should monitor YouTube stream health and have a recovery plan. Your team should monitor YouTube stream health and have a recovery plan.

This is a workflow recommendation based on the documented interfaces and capabilities, not a head-to-head reliability test. No comparative uptime result or minimum computer specification is established for either option.

What to set for YouTube ingest

Use YouTube’s published encoder guidance as a starting point, then validate the settings against your actual upload connection and source. These are recommendations, not guarantees for a particular church network.

  • Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS. FFmpeg documents RTMPS as RTMP over a secure SSL connection.
  • Rate control: Use CBR, as YouTube recommends.
  • Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
  • H.264 video bitrate: YouTube’s current guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps. Select a quality your available upload capacity can reliably sustain.
  • Stereo audio: YouTube recommends 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz; its guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio.
  • Upload capacity: Run a speed test and leave enough capacity for a stable stream rather than choosing quality based only on the source file’s resolution.

Prepare the channel, source, and operator

  1. Confirm the channel is enabled for live streaming, then create or select the intended live event.
  2. Choose OBS for a graphical production workflow, or FFmpeg if a team member will maintain the command-line workflow.
  3. In YouTube’s encoder workflow, select YouTube in the encoder when available. Otherwise copy the server URL. Enter the stream key in the encoder and treat it like a password: do not publish it or share it in public instructions.
  4. Configure the encoder for a supported ingest protocol and the video and audio settings above. Confirm your upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate.
  5. For FFmpeg, the documented input-loop option is -stream_loop -1; FFmpeg says -stream_loop 0 means no loop and -stream_loop -1 means infinite looping. This controls input playback, not network recovery or the YouTube broadcast’s duration.
  6. For OBS, configure the actual source and playback behavior you intend to use. Do not assume that setting output bitrates alone creates a recurring schedule.
  7. Run a test before depending on the stream. Use representative sound and motion, check the loop boundary and audio/video continuity, and verify that the stream reaches YouTube as expected.
  8. During operation, monitor YouTube’s stream-health status and messages. Assign a person to respond or document who will follow the recovery plan if the stream fails.

Plan around looping, interruptions, and YouTube’s archive limit

A repeated file is not the same as a nonstop broadcast

FFmpeg’s infinite input loop says nothing about whether every file will transition cleanly, whether audio remains continuous, or whether a network interruption will recover. OBS’s visual controls likewise do not prove unattended operation. Check the actual source, the loop boundary, and recovery behavior in a real test on the church’s setup.

  • CLOSED CAPTIONS, TIMECODE & REST API – Supports embedding CEA-608 and CEA-708 closed captions in live RTMP streams, source timecode over RTMP and SRT, and offers a REST API over Ethernet for external HTTP control — ideal for broadcast automation and accessibility-compliant workflows.

Test the real service conditions

OBS recommends testing everything as well as possible before the first live stream. YouTube also advises testing before going live with audio and movement similar to the intended stream, monitoring stream health, and reviewing messages. A test using a silent or static clip may miss problems that appear with the actual service recording.

Make an archive and recording plan

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Its consulted guidance does not promise the same archive behavior for a longer continuous stream. If the planned broadcast crosses that threshold, decide in advance how to divide broadcast periods and/or make an independent recording; do not rely on a single longer broadcast being archived in full.

Copyright and content checks for church recordings

Before looping a recording publicly, confirm that the church has permission for the music, performance, video, and other material it contains. A church service recording is not automatically cleared for online rebroadcast just because the church performed or recorded it. Keep permission records and review any rights restrictions that apply to the particular recording. Also consider whether a continuous loop is an appropriate and authorized presentation of the material; neither encoder can grant rights or guarantee that YouTube will accept a broadcast.

Choose by workflow, not an assumed reliability winner

  • Favor OBS when volunteers benefit from visible controls and the stream may need graphical source or scene management.
  • Favor FFmpeg when an operator can maintain a command-line workflow and a fixed, repeatable input loop suits the broadcast.
  • For either option, plan for monitoring and recovery. There is no established reliability comparison that makes one encoder a guaranteed choice for a 24/7 stream.

A local OBS or FFmpeg setup requires a computer capable of running the encoder. No minimum hardware specification is established here: the workload and encoding choice affect what the computer needs to handle. Test the computer and network with your real source before relying on them.
