The labels identify different autofocus motor systems—AF-P uses a pulse or stepping motor, while AF-S uses Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor (SWM)—but they do not explain a lens’s price on their own. To judge whether one lens costs less, compare specific models with similar specifications, features, condition, and compatibility.
What AF-P and AF-S mean
Nikon AF-S NIKKOR lenses use a Silent Wave Motor, which converts traveling waves into rotational energy to focus the optics. AF-P lenses use a pulse, or stepping, autofocus motor. Nikon describes AF-P focusing as quieter and smoother than AF-S, qualities that can be useful when recording video with a DSLR. Nikon’s AF-P lens explainer discusses the distinction.

Those motor descriptions are not a complete ranking of autofocus tracking, image quality, durability, or value. In particular, “AF-P” does not mean a lens is inherently lower quality, and “AF-S” does not guarantee a higher price or better performance in every use.

Why the motor label does not determine the price
A lens’s price reflects its full design and specification, not only its autofocus drive. Nikon’s AF-P lineup includes lenses with different sensor-format coverage, focal ranges, maximum apertures, stabilization, and construction. For example, Nikon’s 2016 announcements describe a retractable, compact AF-P DX 18-55mm and DX 70-300mm options with or without VR. A later full-frame AF-P 70-300mm model has an electromagnetic diaphragm, dust and drip resistance, and a metal mount. Those are materially different configurations, so comparing them by motor label alone can be misleading. See Nikon’s announcements for the AF-P DX 18-55mm, AF-P DX 70-300mm, and AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR.

What a documented price does—and does not—show
Nikon USA listed a suggested retail price of $749.95 at the 2017 US launch of the full-frame AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR. That is a historical launch MSRP for one lens, not a current street price and not a comparison with an equivalent AF-S lens. Nikon also said dealer prices could change. In the same announcement, Nikon described the lens as lighter than its predecessor despite the addition of new technologies. Nikon’s 2017 announcement provides those model-specific details.
The available model-specific evidence does not establish a current, matched AF-P-versus-AF-S price gap or a market-wide percentage difference. A third-party 85mm lens comparison is not a substitute: the cited Digital Camera World article compares a third-party 85mm f/1.8, an AF-S Nikkor 85mm f/1.8G, and a Z 85mm lens, not equivalent AF-P and AF-S models.

How to compare two lenses fairly
Start with the exact lens models rather than the AF-P or AF-S family names. Check these points before deciding that one is the better deal:
- Mount and format: Make sure both lenses fit the camera and provide the sensor coverage you need; a DX lens and a full-frame lens are not like-for-like alternatives.
- Focal length and aperture: Compare the same focal length or zoom range and maximum aperture. These determine how the lens frames subjects and performs in lower light.
- Stabilization: Check whether VR is included. Nikon’s AF-P DX 70-300mm range, for example, included variants with and without VR.
- Construction and features: Account for weight, dimensions, mount material, weather protection, and other included features instead of treating the motor as the whole specification.
- Actual purchase terms: Compare the current price for the same condition and check seller terms. A dated launch MSRP is not a reliable stand-in for today’s new or used price.
- Your autofocus needs: If you record video, Nikon’s stated advantage for AF-P is its quiet, smooth focusing. For other uses, assess the specific lens and your camera rather than assuming a family-wide performance result.
Check camera compatibility before buying AF-P
AF-P compatibility is an important practical difference for DSLR owners. Nikon warns that not every DSLR is compatible with AF-P lenses, and some compatible bodies may need a firmware update to display the relevant settings. Nikon’s 2016 announcement of AF-P DX 70-300mm lenses likewise notes limited camera compatibility and possible firmware requirements. Check Nikon’s compatibility information for your exact camera body and lens before purchase: Nikon AF-P lens compatibility guidance and Nikon’s AF-P DX 70-300mm announcement.

The practical answer is model-specific: some AF-P lenses may cost less than some AF-S alternatives, but the motor designation alone does not establish why or by how much. Match the specifications, features, condition, and camera compatibility before comparing prices.
