Daniel Pertu describes adding tap-to-focus to expo-camera by patching its Android Kotlin and iOS Swift code, TypeScript declarations, and compiled JavaScript output. His implementation is pinned to [email protected]; it is an account of one app’s approach, not a verified drop-in patch for current releases.
What the patch adds—and what it does not
Pertu says his capture flow needed users to choose a small point of interest, which continuous autofocus did not let them select by touch. The patch adds a native method to request focus at a selected point, then returns to continuous focus after a delay. It also draws a focus ring at the tapped location to show that the tap registered. The ring is keyed by a timestamp so another tap at the same coordinates can trigger fresh feedback.

Expo’s camera documentation describes CameraView, Android, iOS, and web support, and an autoFocus setting for focus mode. A focus-mode setting is not the same thing as choosing a focus point by tapping. The documentation reviewed here does not settle whether a newer first-party tap-to-focus API is available, so check the API for the exact Expo SDK and package version in your project before maintaining a patch.

Pertu reports changing the Android Kotlin and iOS Swift implementations, TypeScript API declarations, and compiled JavaScript output and declarations. His explanation for editing the compiled files is practical: the installed package runs its published output, so changing source files alone may leave the new method unavailable at runtime. The exact files and internal APIs can vary by package release; inspect the installed version rather than applying paths from another release blindly.

How the tap reaches the camera’s focus coordinates
A tap begins in the preview’s view coordinates, but the camera may use a different coordinate space. Pertu warns that the preview uses aspect-fill: it fills the view by cropping part of the camera image. Consequently, simply dividing the touch’s horizontal and vertical positions by the view’s width and height may not identify the corresponding point in the camera image. His account flags coordinate mapping as a detail to validate against the app’s preview layout and target devices; it is not an independently verified transform.
- Check how the preview is scaled and cropped on each target device.
- Test taps near the edges as well as the center, where a mistaken mapping may be harder to notice.
- Confirm that the focus indicator appears at the intended point and that the camera responds as expected.
The article also describes guarding delayed focus changes against a lens switch: before writing a later state change, it checks that the active capture device is still the same. This is an implementation detail in Pertu’s account, not a general guarantee of expo-camera.

Choose between a package patch and a local Expo module
The two approaches have different maintenance boundaries. Pertu chose a package patch to extend the camera package used by his app. Expo’s custom native-code guide also documents local Expo modules written in Swift and Kotlin. A local module is a separate route, not an automatic replacement for a patch when the new control must integrate directly into CameraView.

| Build constraints | Pertu says his patch requires native builds. | Expo’s guide describes adding Swift and Kotlin code through a local module, so the feature requires a native build workflow. |
| Best fit | May suit a feature that needs to be exposed through the package’s existing camera component and whose maintainers accept package-patch upkeep. | May suit code the app can own as a separate native module, provided the required camera integration can be achieved there. |
Expo Go, web, and native builds
Do not expect this patch to work in Expo Go as described. Pertu says his implementation adds custom native code and requires real native builds. Expo’s guide explains that Expo Go can use native libraries included in its SDK or libraries that do not require custom native code; it also explains how to add local modules in Swift and Kotlin. Use a development build or another native build workflow that includes your code.

The author’s app also treats the feature as native-only. Its web path uses a browser media preview without the focus control, so it leaves a plain shutter there. Pertu describes making the native method call optional so that a missing patched method can degrade without crashing. If following that approach, keep the web path explicit and verify that the fallback really avoids calling unavailable native functionality.

Pertu pins his patch to [email protected]. He says a patch that stops applying after a package update should fail installation and prompt a review rather than silently discard the change. This is a maintenance signal, not proof that a patch applies safely: a cleanly applied patch can still conflict with changed behavior or lifecycle assumptions.

At the time represented by the cited documentation, Expo recommends ~57.0.6 for its camera package, and the changelog lists releases through 58.0.7. Those version identifiers do not establish compatibility with Pertu’s 57.0.5 patch. Before adopting or upgrading it, compare the native implementation, declarations, and compiled output with the exact installed package, then test on physical Android and iOS devices—including preview mapping, focus feedback, and lens changes.
