Examples include an internal SSD or hard disk drive (HDD), as well as removable media such as a USB flash drive, memory card, or optical disc. Storage keeps files and programs available beyond the moment they are being processed; that is different from RAM, which acts as temporary working space.
What does a computer storage device do?
Storage gives a computer a place to keep data for later use. It can hold operating-system files, applications, documents, photos, and other information. Unlike temporary working data, persistent storage is designed to retain information when the computer is switched off. OpenStax explains this role in its overview of the memory hierarchy.

“Persistent” does not mean permanent or guaranteed safe: a device can fail, and stored data can be lost or damaged. Storage by itself is not a backup.

How is storage different from RAM?
RAM (random-access memory) is the computer’s working space for information it is actively using. Storage holds information for later retrieval, including after power is off. Intel describes the distinction as temporary information used during processing versus longer-term information that may be used again in its introduction to computers.

The word “memory” can mean different things in everyday usage. In this distinction, RAM means working memory; an SSD or HDD is a storage device.
What are common types of storage devices?
Solid-state drives (SSDs)
An SSD uses solid-state memory to store persistent data. The National Institute of Standards and Technology defines an SSD as “A storage device that uses solid-state memory to store persistent data” in its SSD glossary entry, attributed there to NIST SP 800-88r2. SSDs are used as internal computer drives and in removable storage devices.

Hard disk drives (HDDs)
An HDD stores information on rotating platters and uses mechanical movement to read and write data. This differs from an SSD’s solid-state storage. Microsoft’s consumer overview of SSDs, HDDs, and storage types describes SSDs as smaller and faster than HDDs in broad terms; the result for a particular computer depends on the drive, connection, workload, and system.

Removable devices can be added to or removed from a computer or system. Examples include USB flash drives, memory cards, external or removable SSDs and HDDs, optical discs, and magnetic or optical tape. NIST lists these kinds of media in its portable storage device glossary entry. A flash drive or card may require a compatible port or card reader.

Is cloud storage a storage device?
Cloud storage is a service or arrangement for storing data on remote systems that you access over a network; it is not a physical device in the same sense as an SSD, HDD, flash drive, or disc. The actual storage hardware is elsewhere, while the user interacts with the service through a computer or other connected device.

No. A storage device may be installed inside a computer or connected externally and removable. “Portable storage device” is a narrower category: NIST describes it as a system component that can communicate with and be added to or removed from a system or network, with data storage as its primary function. That definition does not apply to all storage devices.
