If a Word header or footer is missing from a printout, first open File > Print and check the affected page in print preview. If it is missing there too, look for a page-specific header or section mismatch; if it appears in preview but not on paper, check the printer’s printable area and settings.
Start by checking the affected page in print preview
- In Word for Windows, select File > Print.
- Use the preview to inspect the exact page with the missing header or footer, then compare it with a nearby page.
- Note whether the content is absent from preview or visible there but missing or clipped on the printed page.
This distinction narrows the cause: missing content in preview usually points to the document’s header/footer setup or a Word print option, while content visible in preview but absent on paper suggests a printer setting or printable-area problem. The preview and print controls are in Word’s File > Print screen.

If the header or footer is missing in preview
Check the page’s first-page or odd/even variant
Word can use a separate header and footer on the first page, and separate versions on odd- and even-numbered pages. Content entered in one version does not automatically appear in another. On the affected page, open its header or footer and confirm you are editing the version that page uses. Check whether Different First Page or Different Odd & Even Pages is enabled; if so, add the needed content to the applicable header or footer. Check the section containing the affected page
A section break can give part of a document its own header and footer. Go to the affected page and open the relevant header or footer; confirm that the content exists in that section’s corresponding area. If the header/footer should match the preceding section, check Link to Previous. Word links matching header/footer types by default, but first-page and odd/even types link separately, so check the specific type you are editing. Check whether the missing item is a shape or text box
If the header or footer is made from a shape or text box rather than ordinary text, check Word’s drawing print option: select File > Options > Display, then under Printing options enable Print drawings created in Word. Microsoft notes that when this option is cleared, drawing objects such as shapes and text boxes are replaced with blank boxes in print output. This setting concerns drawing objects, not ordinary text. See Microsoft’s Word printing options.
If the header or footer appears in preview but not on paper
Check top and bottom margins against the printer’s printable area
A printer cannot print right to every edge of a sheet. If the missing content sits close to the top or bottom edge, move it farther into the page by increasing the corresponding margin or repositioning the header/footer. Also check the printer manufacturer’s minimum-margin specifications. Microsoft identifies a printer’s minimum margin as the usual reason page borders fail to print; the same physical limit can affect content positioned near an edge. Its page-border explanation is about printable-area limits; its interface directions are for Word 2007 and earlier, so do not rely on them for current navigation.

Verify the print destination and page setup
In File > Print, confirm Word is sending the job to the intended printer and that the selected paper size, orientation, and page range match the document and the pages you expect to print. If available, try a different output path or printer to see whether the problem follows the document or the device.

Microsoft’s Windows printer guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11. It also notes that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. If a Windows test page fails too, that points away from a Word document problem and toward the printer or Windows print path. Microsoft’s printer troubleshooting steps include restarting the Print Spooler and updating or reinstalling drivers. If the problem is limited to Word, its Office repair guidance is another step to consider.

A practical order for fixing the issue
- Inspect the affected page in File > Print preview.
- If the content is absent there, check the page’s first-page or odd/even variant and the header/footer for its section.
- If the missing item is a shape or text box, enable Print drawings created in Word under File > Options > Display.
- If preview looks correct, move edge-positioned content inward and verify the printer’s paper size, orientation, and printable area.
- Test another Word document and another application; if printing fails beyond that one file, use a Windows test page and follow printer or driver troubleshooting.
